Thinking of maybe having a round at nth Adelaide north course one morning, but making it 4 clubs only to make it a bit of a challenge! Flavzz and I had a matchplay game a while back and it was great

Flavzz

How'd it go?

Chris32
18th September 2011, 08:12 PM
Yeah good, the course was in good shape as expected. Weather was perfect, and apart from a reasonably slow day I really enjoyed it!

I had 30 points ( 11 and 19) and hit the ball pretty well. I think Iight have ended up with longest drive on the 16th, there wasn't too many groups behind us. Flavzz was a bit green around the gills but managed to hit some good shots

Interesting course, some really good holes. Probably could do with getting rid of some trees though, it would open some holes up nicely

Flavzz
19th September 2011, 07:44 AM
I successfully displayed how not to play with an epic hangover and 26 pts. Chris played really well and put on a ball striking exhibition as I struggled to stay alive and play golf at the same time. Glad to get thru the day tho. The course is always enjoyable and was in decent nick.

The pat next weekend boys and for those who haven't expressed interest get involved.

Chris32
19th September 2011, 03:38 PM
Got the long drive ;) shame it wasn't measured on the 10th, I really got that one flush

On another note, i got a email notifying me to collect the voucher, and I asked when the next Kooyonga open day is. It's not planned yet but they have put my phone number on the database and will SMS me before the next one goes up on the golflink website so we can get in early and secure a few groups. I will post up the details when I get them

Tried to get in at The Pat, but unable to get anything early enough, (so if planning a get together there would seem best to get in about 2 months before it's due to happen!), so next on the list I went for Willunga, (deciding factor being it's not as far out as Mt Compass), and managed to get 3 groups booked there, 8.28, 8.35 and 8.42am, (don't be late!) - hope this is ok with you guys!?

On the dress code, could you please confirm Tim, (or not!?), that if wearing shorts knee length socks do not have to be worn also? Had a quick scan of the website and it seems white ankle socks are ok, but I remember thinking that once at Kooey and had to buy some of the stupid things on the day to get on the course :-(

Secondly, it's $60 per round, correct?

I too will aim to be there for 10ish.

Knee length socks not required, short white ones that cover the ankles are fine.

Overall I believe Jasonb or Chilled had the best scores, (stableford).

Personally I had 24pts which contained 6 pars and not playing/completing the last four holes! Was actually quite happy with how I was playing - just kinda lost concentration/interest at the end ................... must have been the playing in the afternoon, normally an early starter!

The Bushnell proved to be a wise buy tho, more than once I clubbed to what it was saying to great results :-)

Right, so the next one ........................................ !?!?!?

Thank you Tim & Terry for the oppurtunity to play at your home club - I had a very enjoyable day , even with the sunburn i copped on my legs !!! 39 points for equal 1st in the comp :o, had quite a few choppa moments as well - 2nd shot on the 1st a 150mtr blade along the ground to get on in reg , an airey out of a very deep plugged fairway bunker on the 2nd, just snuck in to beat Von Nida's score on the 3rd (7) & bounced off the Cleanaway bin on the 17th  - Terry did advise me to keep well clear of that massive bunker!

I think both Nick & myself had 0 out of 4 birdies putt attempts drop, & and dont worry Brenton - Chris was out driving us with his 4 metal!

Hahahaha i was pounding it off the tee all day, so I decided to go for it and be a lil aggressive on the 8th when the others played it safe and went with the 3 wood except lazy Nadge. I caught it out the heal still went straight but lost some distance and then Tim stepped up and POUNDED his 3 Metal i swear when he hit it the club shouted POW!

Thanks for posting that Flavzz!
I'm looking to get some new clubs in the next few months, do you think I would be able to buy say 4-5 of these vouchers and redeem that at the same time on a set of clubs?
And has anyone been to the store to see what their range/prices are like?

I'm a bit of a hacker (25) but I dont think my clubs are helping (see attached - my mates borrowed big bertha's on left, my "rohan golf" ones on right)
So probably looking for some "game improvement clubs", but would only on a limited budget ($200-$450 probably)

In addition, one of my mates went to the driving range in Adel and got fitted by a guy called Chris. He reckons it was great, and he is going back later to get shafts. Should I go get fitted first before I get clubs? ie: So I dont buy the wrong type of clubs/shafts?
Also, does anyone know if they sell clubs there and what price they are? Maybe if they have decent second hand ones? The only issue I have is that I live in Whyalla so it's a bit of a drive up there and usually only get down once every couple of months.

Thanks (and sorry for the long email!)
Peter

Pete,

Those clubs u have are more of a players iron from those photos. Game improvement irons are definately gonna 'improve your game' :) See what i did there! But seriously in your budget you can get some very good condition second hand irons that fit your game and offer more forgiveness. Callys, Ping G series, TM burner etc.

Whats your height to start with? Do you hit your mates Callys well?

I imagine the Chris you speak of is Westy at Ohalloran hill range and is a well respected clubfitter but ill leave Tim to give you his opinion as he knows him better than most of us.

Flavzz - Yep, was at O'Halloran hill, not sure of the guy's second name but I think he said first name was Chris.
I'm only short (about 168cm), have only been playing since April and probably have a terrible swing.
I hit my mate's callaways OK (the long irons in particular were a lot better). Not sure but I think the long irons at least seemed to be more offset for so I didnt slice them as much, but it could just be the technology/size difference as well.
I'm a cricket/hockey player (well not so much these days), but I've heard that cricket players tend to have a slice (and I've also heard that most hackers have a slice though anyway!)

Anyway, was wondering whether to just buy the clubs first, then get fitted later, or get fitted first so I know what clubs/shafts etc to buy? Or is it a case of with my handicap it doesnt matter?

I feel I can hit the ball OK (driving distance is probably average for B/C grade ~225-275m on the range), and my lowest practice round score is 41 for 9 holes (my lowest comp score is 91, average probably about 100).

Would def have been Chris 'Westy' West - knows his stuff.

If you are going to get fitted, do it first, if not you could end up having to spend more money buying different shafts and then getting them fitted, OR selling what you've already bought to find some to the specs you require.

The Range do not tend to have much in the way of second hand clubs available, and the iron brands they tend to mainly sell are Alpha, KZG and Wilson Staff. If second hand is your pref then look at the 'Pro Shop' listings on here, Iseekgolf or good old EBay/Ebay USA plus 3Balls Golf, Rockbottom Golf and Global Golf, (all USA - have dealt with all and have had no probs with them).

One bonus with buying second hand is that they have already dropped their biggest $ value so if you do need to sell them on again you will not lose very much - if you've bought a brand that's popular that is!

I bought 3 vouchers. I'm sure I can wax them before....say...Sunday.
I should have bought 10.

Westy is a very knowledgeable fitter. Probably the best in SA. You could do worse than see him although he does lean toward fitting people into soft shafts.. That's his thing. I know as I was his partner at The Range for several years. Greg & a few of the Whyalla boys have been using his services for years.
Pete. Another alternative is to post your swing on here & get some recommendations. It's likely that at your stage of development & decent 2nd hand set will do you no harm if you know what to look for.
Try to hit a few of your mates 6 irons to get a comparison & an idea of what gives you a decent ball flight.
Oh...& get a lesson.;)

Flavzz
29th November 2011, 10:56 PM
I bought 4 and also should have bought more

All good advice above, I think until u build a decent swing its not worth going all out to get custom fitted as this will be 2-3 times your budget. Your swing will change a bit over the early stages, especially if you get lessons. Also if you do get lessons get them early as its harder to break bad habits later and the pro should recommend club specs for your build/swing..

catch22
30th November 2011, 06:45 AM
Thanks for the advice everyone! I played with Greg in clare, he's moved to Adelaide now, good bloke (assuming its the same Greg)

Since I'm going to HB on saturday for a month or so, I think I'll probably go down the path of getting some lessons there (dont think I can get lessons in Whyalla), then see how I go. When I can make it up to Adelaide next I might see if I can arrange a fitting session at the range, maybe my swing will be better by then!

Any specific irons I should go for? Or are pretty much any modern "cavity back" type ones ok? When I was adelaide last I almost got talked into buying some Adams RPM3's for $350 at the golf shop in the Mile End homemaker centre, they looked fairly nice but still fairly thinish.
