View Full Version : Resolved Page Hangs

This is where the loading never happens, although it might look like it is still trying.

I know it is an issue, and I know that it is inconvenient. I suspect what may be the cause of it, but it is not confirmed.

Starting this thread now allows me to ignore any further comment on it in the "OZgolf = Slow?" thread. I don't want the two separate issues confused.

Happens all the time on the iPhone. Only every now and then on the Mac at home

AndyP

How do you view the forum on the iPhone, jaybam? Browser, ForumRunner or TapaTank?

Sydney Hacker

This is what ha been happening to me on my work laptop which uses IE. iPhone using the browser and lite style seems fine.

Just the browser mate.

henno

I think this is an Apache issue. It is definitely server-side.

henno
26th July 2011, 10:12 PM
It might also be a PHP and/or apache max_connections problem. I have had no more than 2 minutes thought on this, but just throwing ideas out there for similar issue's I've come across.

Courty
26th July 2011, 10:23 PM
Henno, if it was one of these problems you have mentioned, what would be the solution(s)?

henno
26th July 2011, 10:33 PM
Henno, if it was one of these problems you have mentioned, what would be the solution(s)?

It depends on so many factors. That limit is there for a reason, so you could hammer your server by opening it up. Or in the case of shared hosting I'd be surprised if you have access to the httpd.conf or the php server configs anyway.

AndyP
26th July 2011, 10:45 PM
You could always ask the admin of the site what he knows about it.

just
27th July 2011, 08:39 AM
I haven't tried lightweight style but I have had problems in chrome, firefox and opera, on and off peak and in lights on and lights off, at work and at home. The site isn't slow, it just hangs when opening a thread or refreshing.
So you don't ignore it.
A suggestion for you why don't you lay it all out and let everyone know what you think the problem is? It surely couldn't be commercial in confidence (?) and there are enough IT people on here that some good suggestions may come of it.

AndyP
27th July 2011, 09:03 AM
Why would I have ignored your post? Surely "further comment" implies that it is any post made after my post.

The hanging, unlike the slowness, is a known issue which appears to happen for everyone, including myself. Like henno says, this implies that it is a server side issue.

There is a support ticket open with the hosts for the problem, and they believe it may be the max_user_connections issue similar to that which henno mentioned above, despite a forum of our size usually being fine for this restriction. If it is this, it would mean upgrading plans or changing hosts, which is something I'd like to avoid at this stage.

I generally only have problems using chrome when I am replying to a quote.

goonie

can't remember if it's happened on the lightweight style but it happens on firefox all the time, and tapatalk, tapatalk also gets a lot of empty/blank threads that disappear after a refresh.

A lot better today. For the past couple of weeks, it was approx. every tenth thread selected used to hang.

Only twice/three times today, and then it may have been impatience.

(IE9 on Windows7 at home. IE7/IE8? on XP? on a large network at work.)

I have to reload/reselect pages in firefox quite a bit at home and work, sometimes 1-2 times out of 10.
Some nights using tapatalk I have seen the blank thread everytime I go into a new category like Proshop, Equip Me, TourTalk.......
I have noticed this issue for about the last week, but nothing tonight.

Just trying to give you some info.

I really don't want to have to upgrade the server package we are on at this stage for a couple of reasons. I'm hoping the tweaks that I've made are enough to get us through. I don't think any of the changes that I have made have a big negative side anyway.

I once played golf with a 70 something that left the shiny sticker on his hat. I'm not quite sure if he was aware of the fashion. A few weeks later, it was gone, but there was a dark circle left behind where the sticker once was. :)

Andy,

I too have this issue of page hangs and it seems to be happening more frequently of late; at home on a Mac, using Safari will hang every so often through the night.

Also on my iPhone using the browser and mobile version of Ozgolf

Not a major stressor though, just mildly inconvenient

Cheers

An upgrade to the server (VPS) is needed, although I’m not 100% confident that we can afford it in the long term, as I’ve only been in charge of the site’s finances for 6 months. I have been looking at our needs and trying to find the best server fit for the site recently. I also need to find out how different it will be for me to manage, because if it is significantly different there will be a bit for me to learn and no time to do it.

But, I think it has got to the stage where it is unbearable, and I’ll have to bite the bullet and upgrade with our current hosts and figure it out or go somewhere else after.

just
9th November 2011, 11:10 AM
Afford it in monetary terms or other? If it is monetary what would be the initial and long term costs?

AndyP
9th November 2011, 11:39 AM
$$$$

Our current server costs are $10 per month, but we are looking at about $40 per month with the upgrade. It’s fine for now, as there is money in the bank from the merchandise sales and donations. It just needs to keep coming in over the long term to pay for those running costs. There are other avenues I’ve investigated (the merchandise was one of those), as I would prefer to not completely rely on member donations, and I think we’ll cope, but it is a risk.
