IanO if you can get hold of a small Bottle jack, I could build you one like mine (for parts and a small fee), which is a complete rip off of the JB.

Mine works a treat, actually I pulled a graphite shaft with it yersterday

Chappy I will find a bottle jack and take you up on the build. I am sick of being charged $10 when I change a shaft and it will let me fool with my spare club set-ups!

Maybe I'm missing something; I pull shafts successfully without one??

Twisting with a grahite shaft is a MASSIVE "No No"

Who said anything about twisting?
Shaft tips aren't threaded you know?

Yes Graphite, Yes Really.

How do you pull the shafts?

henno
28th July 2011, 09:20 AM
You must have triceps the size of quads if you can pull a graphite shaft straight out by hand. Either that or you use blu-tack instead of glue.

Ian,
I'm working on a new prototype Shaft Extractor, this one doesn't require a bottle jack, will keep you updated.

OK ... I will lay off buying the bottle jack until I hear more ... Thanks

I'm looking for one too Chappy so any updates on your prototype, when appropriate, would be appreciated.

No problemo KL

The one I made with the bottlejack works an absolute treat, however the logistics involved in the manufacture of it make it a little unsustainable for any soft of limited reproduction.

I have a concept in mind that would be a little easier to manufacture and still provide an easy way to pull graphite shafts simply.

Keep you posted

How would a bar clamp go, with the handle turned around, so it works as a spreader rather than a clamp?

He could use massive amounts of heat too as a third option.

Massive heat will delaminate the graphite shaft ?

had thought the same thing

or even a weight hung from the grip while the hosel is heated in a u shaped bracket

chappy1970
28th July 2011, 12:13 PM
Dotty I don't know exactly, but I would think the heat generally applied during the shaft removal process may be a little too much for the Irwin.

I don't know this for certain and I have 2 of these clamps at home for other purposes

It's never good. Not saying it's happening. It might be handy for someone without a puller looking to get a throw away shaft out as opposed to cutting and drilling.

um, with my hands? I have a piece of 2"x12mm with a notch in it for help if need be.

No, I'm a weedy little computer geek who'd be lucky to weigh 60 kilos sopping wet.
I don't pull the shaft from the head per-se, actually clamp the shaft and pull the head.

Either that or you use blu-tack instead of glue.

No, Golfworks Graphite Shafting Epoxy.
I don't think that Blu-Tac would work very well.
Isn't that the stuff you use to put up posters on your bedroom wall?
('ve also done this with some shafts assembled by persons other than I.)

22 deg, axivcore blue 85s at 39.5", about 180 carry approx.
I reckon I have done well when I hit driver out there 230ish.

I don't think I have ever sold a graphite shaft anyway.
Definately not on here.
Actually, the last load of stuff I didn't need, I just gave away to a bunch of you.

I don't think the heat I am using is excessive.
The consistency of the residual epoxy on the shaft tip doesn't suggest too much heat is being used.
My fairway wood shaft is in its third head with no issues - except the urchin swinging it!

chappy1970
28th July 2011, 01:35 PM
Michael if it's working for you then that's all that should matter.

I'm a bit of a tinkerer and had a number of materials at my disposal and was also able to get access to a welder, so I took on a mini project which I enjoyed thorough and it now serves me extremely well.

I now pull graphite shafts with confidence knowing that it's being extracted straight, without any stress on the tip and with minimum heat applied.

PeteyD
28th July 2011, 01:40 PM
I am impressed. I did try without a proper puller and stuffed a shaft so got one. I had difficulty pulling it straight, and a general lack of patience which is not conducive to these sort of things.

chappy1970
28th July 2011, 01:45 PM
Patience is certainly the key Pete, to ensure neither the head nor the shaft are affected during the process. Low heat with a heat gun can take a little longer than the gas bottle or torch, but hey an extra minute is no big deal

PeteyD
28th July 2011, 01:52 PM
Yep. All good now with the puller. It is a nut on a cylinder thing that you slip over the shaft. Works nicely.
