Rory would have to be short odds at most betting agencies for leading a major after the first round wouldn't he?

From memory that is the US Open, Masters & The Open in the last year he has put together great first rounds.

Perhaps not. I tried it this morning. It seemed to be about to start and then would quit but didn't give an error message or a message saying not available outside the US.

It'll be a bit of a bitch if it can't. I was in the US this time last year & watched the final round on the iphone app.

Notice the tricked up groupings?

The Italians together (including the brothers), the Spaniards together, world 1,2 and 3 together (I actually like this), 3 Masters together and the unfortunate losers together - Rory, DJ and Phil.

I don't rate this sort of crap fancy stuff.

I was wondering whether Ryan Palmer failed to attend the compulsory Tuesday Bible study and got that group as his punishment. Didn't know he was one of them.

The third is Ryan Moore not Ryan Palmer, makes sense.

No mention of Scott Hend boys ? I didn't even realise he was in the field.

Saw a highlight of him chipping in for birdie at one hole and he ended up -2 and tied for 4th! Handy start. Good luck to him over the next 3 days. They said he qualiied for the US then flew to Italy for the open there then flew to the states.

Solid -1's from last weeks winner Robert Rock who rocks the no hat look and also from defending champ G Mac who is still well under the radar. Rock also had not played a round at congressional before today.

Ps can someone please shoot Sabbatini and that stupid hat. Cowboy wanker. Why does every other S African golfer seem like a top bloke except him?

MegaWatty
17th June 2011, 08:59 PM
Sabs has had skin cancer cut out which is why he's chosen that hat. Trying to find any sort of wide brim hat that doesn't flop around in the wind is near impossible. Honestly, he's chosen to wear it for a fair reason. Who cares?

I would love to see Rory win by a big margin and then go on to dominate for the next 5-10 years, I really believe all he lacks is that conditioning but once he has that winning feeling and the monkey of being a choker is off the back he will be dominant, probably not as dominant as Tiger was on the game but in his own right.

Absolutely love his style of play, it looks very easy.

I havent seen much coverage, only the last 30 mins on one HD this morning.

Are the Aussies playing poorly or is the course just kicking their butts? Surely Rory couldn't have another meltdown from the position he's in. If the Aussies struggle I'd rather see him take out the major than one of the US players.

Whats the story with them hitting off so late in the afternoon 3.20Pm their time.

That is a really long time to be awake before hitting off, and it messes with your head. I know from experience up north when final groups wouldn't tee off until 1.45pm and that was too much for me, because you just cant wait to get out there. I found the best way to compensate was to hit the nightclubs until about 3am so I could sleep longer.

Grat for Day, unexpected. And almost back-to-backs for Rory if he wouldn't have choked on that Sunday. Golf is becoming very interesting once again....

Why do you think Day coming second is unexpected? 2 top 10s in the last 3 majors (3 of 4 now). Awesome to see Rory go Wire to Wire.

Congrats to Rory particularly, and great effort for Day.

With such a global dominance, not just one country, any chance they could drop the US PGA and pick up another tournament as the 4th major?

Looking forward to seeing Day in the Presidents Cup

Agree with this, its because all everyone seems to talk about in Australia is Adam Scott this and Adam Scott that, Day much better player in "my opinon" and will win a major before Scott does.

Makes a bit of a mockery of all that BULLSH*T stuff by the Americans after Rory's Masters collapse, "...will he have scar tissue?"..."can he ever recover?" ..."will he contend at a Major again after this?" and blah, blah, blah (we have to talk 'cos we love the sound of our own voices!)

That's how to answer the critics I guess!

(and I reckon Stevie is now reconsidering a future move to Scotty's bag!!!)

no chance. There is no 'they' that decided what is or is not a major. They just are.

It's the only way the guys on the telecast could live with the fact that the highest "actual" American was in the midst of a shootout for shitsteenth.

Heard Johnny Miller crap on about the lack of US winners in the Majors of late, should be more of it I think.

Frickin US golfers think they have a god given right to win the US based majors.

They can claim one major winner though because Johhny Miller is a MAJOR TOOL

I heard that idiot journalist Jim Wilson being interviewed on Sky News about the win of McIlroy.

Get this - he said he was astounded that McIlroy wasn't playing in the Presidents Cup this year. Another journo then had to explain to Wilson the concept of the Presidents Cup. Wilson then went on to demonstrate even more that he doesn't know a thing about golf & blab on that because the best golfers are now European there should be a 'way' to get Europeans playing in Australia for the Aussie fans.

Wish Johnny miller would just retire he really is a pain to listen to. Think it was in the second round that miller virtually said McDowell had a shit swing then the very next day he was backing down from what he had said...wanker!
Full credit to rory he really kicked some butt. That wasn't anything like a us open course from what I can recall, short rough and soft greens was more like a regular tour event.

The pin placements were allegedly to give the rest of the field a chance to catch McIlroy.

Yeah I understand that but in past us opens players would struggle just to hold the greens and there was always a premium to hitting the fairway.

I havent heard anything like that coming from the Yanks. When Rory lost the US Masters the yankees seemed to take an instant liking to him, and crowd were supporting him all around the US open from what I saw. Completelythe opposite to how they treated the grumpy Scotsman in years gone by, by cheering his bad shots etc

For clarity gents my comment was in response to Johnny Miller and Co in the commentary box.

I certainly didn't detect any US bias with the galleries on the telecast so this was not aimed at them (Ryder Cup crowds excluded)

Funniest moment in the final round was Henrik Stenson chucking a wobbly, thumping his iron hard on the ground and snapping the shaft only to have it stab him in the hand! His caddy had to get the first aid kit out to patch him up :-)
