View Full Version : Upcoming Downtime - Server Change

AndyP
11th May 2011, 08:21 AM
Sometime in the next few days, I expect the forum to go down while it changes servers. I have no idea on the amount of downtime at this stage, but it could be up to 36 hours.

I will try to get an approximation of time, when I have a better idea. When it does go down, I'll provide any useful updates via Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/OZgolf.net).

If you are in the middle of something or waiting for a thread update or PM when it does go down, sucked in.

Server change?? Didn't you do that recently??

AndyP
11th May 2011, 08:44 AM
The hosts did one themselves, because their server stuffed up. This change is initiated by us.

Why will it be down though? There is a simple way to ensure it doesn't go down, you know.

Whatever will the WAnkers do ?

AndyP, I can assume you're referring to DNS propagation issues, but here's what I do.

Create a mirror of the site on the new server.
Prepare for the DNS change on that server.
Create a redirect script to go from ozgolf.net to new.ozgolf.net (but call it index.txt or something)
Freeze the old site, and upload the most up-to-date database to the new server. (This should be the only downtime, and it's just to ensure no stray posts are left on the old site)
Change the redirect script to index.html and now everyone will be automatically posting on new.ozgolf.net
Make the DNS changes at the domain registrar so that ozgolf.net now points to the new server.

That's pretty much it. While DNS is propagating and people are still directed to the old server, they will automatically redirected to new.ozgolf.net. Once DNS is propagated, ozgolf.net will go to the new server automatically (providing the initial setup is done right).

All you need to do is maybe clean up the new.ozgolf.net references in a week or two, just to maintain a tidy house.

except i would not go to those lengths. just freeze the old site.

do a database backup.

place a notice on old forum

copy to new server.

change Dns.

that 36 hour window is ancient but still spread by server admins to cover their incompetence if something goes wrong. for years now i have not seen Dns to take any more than a few hours to propogate to the core nameservers and often a few seconds.

AP are you migrating from a Cpanel host to Cpanel ?

if yes they can do a seemless transfer that probably takes 5 mins tops and you do nothing.

if not that is a pretty good reason to use cpanel hosting.

henno
11th May 2011, 11:52 AM
My way is far more elegant, and seemless to the user if done right. (unless they look up and see the new subdomain in that short amount of time while the DNS is propagating).

Yes. At this stage I'm doing nothing, as the transfer request is in with the hosts.

Robyn would have to change the DNS though.

I stated 36 hours in case of my incompetence and something goes wrong. ;)

henno

And while I agree on the average time for DNS propagation, the reason that is spread by server admins is not for the reason you stated. It's because they have no control over each individual ISPs DNS setup and how often they update their records, not matter what TTL they use at the nameserver.

Awesome, except that now when it all happens seamlessly inside of 30 mins, everyone now knows you are not awesome.

I agree, but I dont think is worth the effort. Its Ozgolf not Ebay :-)

the reason that is spread by server admins is not for the reason you stated.

I know what you are saying about the ISPs, but I have worked with too many self preservation conscious system administrators to change my mind. They lie through their teeth about what the do when covering their tracks.

The no. of times they say "must have been a transient issue, as its no longer occuring" or worse "cannot repeat the issue" when it is a fact that they actually made a change to resolve it is beyond belief.

I laughed my head off when 3/4 of them were made redundant. (austar circa 2001)

I think it will go down tonight, and not come back until tomorrow afternoon when I'm available to upload one file that will fix it. But I'm just speculating.

AndyP

The transfer process started 4 hours ago apparently. I may lock the forum soon.

AndyP
13th May 2011, 09:04 AM
There won't be much need to lock, as the hosts have been quite good in dealing with. They are mirroring the site now, then allow me to test that it works, then re-mirror with updated posts. Downtime should be limited, if I redirect from the Robyn's server to mine and I am home when the final transfer happens (I need to amend the forum config file manually).

It's still coming. The hosts have done the initial transfer, but I have to find the time to test it. Once I give the okay, they'll copy from the live site and the downtime will come some time after.

AndyP
17th May 2011, 08:32 AM
The following page will help you once the forum goes down and you are waiting for the DNS to propogate across to my server account.

http://support.hostgator.com/articles/pre-sales-questions/how-do-i-change-my-hosts-file

Here is the line that you'll want to add to your hosts file, according to the instructions referenced above:

184.172.153.90 ozgolf.net (http://ozgolf.net/) www.ozgolf.net (http://www.ozgolf.net)

AndyP

All that will tell you is that their particular DNS server has updated; nothing more.

If it makes you feel better, I can force my DNS server to do that and then let you know that I arrived here without amending my /etc/hosts file? ;-)
