Australian boxing great Lionel Rose has died aged 62.

Rose beat Fighting Harada in 1968 to win the world bantamweight title and in doing so became the first Aboriginal to win a world title.

His death makes it a bitter-sweet day for Australian boxing, coming on the day Daniel Geale became only the fourth Australian boxer to win a world title overseas.

Sad Loss but has had poor health for a while.
The Towns of Drouin and Warrugul will be in mourning tomorrow.

We used to see Lionel down the Valley back in '84. funny bugger actually....we had many laughs with him as he would come up and talk to us when we were on the beat. Usually it would be him pointing out a drunk female and telling us how much she wanted to work her magic on us skinny white boys.

Always glad he was laughing and not wanting to fight us as even then he was still a fairly strong man.
