Anyone know much about it?

Looking like I am needing one soonish.

My Grandmother had it done .... twice, on the same leg.

They ****ed the first one up and needed to redo it.

It killed her in the end

Something to look forward to.

Not that I can at the moment, so no loss there.

My uncle had one (or two) done in his 60's, and he said it made a world of difference.

It was pretty routine, like most major procedures now ... Give a pint or two of blood a month beforehand. Get operated on and stay in hospital for a week, wearing circulation stockings. Then a fortnight in a private rehab hospital.

A 50yo at the club has had one also, and is playing golf better than ever.

Do you have any hospital/medical cover Pete?

from what I have heard, it is a lot easier op than a knee op and pain relief is almost instantaneous. The recovery is much easier than a knee too.

A friend of mine has had both done and is much better off than before they were done.

Yep. I pay health insurance and am still way in front from when #1 was born.

Thanks, the pain relief sounds great. They have a resurfacing option rather than a full replacement as well, might be possible. It would be nice to be able to walk again.

I would think your health fund will be able to give you some idea of the oop cost to you.

PeteyD
3rd May 2011, 02:28 PM
It'll be the gap and anaesthetist bill. I wouldn't expect it to be too great. More opportunity cost - work and golf that concerns me. But not being able to enjoy 18 holes cos it ****en hurts too much is starting to wear real thin.

Another here PD, my mate (aged 50) had both done a while ago after being in pain for 10 or more years, best thing he ever did 6 months down the track. They get you up and starting your recovery the day after.

If anyone has played Bonville, we used to have to carry him up to the tee on the Par 3, 3rd when things were bad, reckons he will sprint up there this year.

Pete,

I spent my first few years here at the Wesley based in the orthopaedic ward, so I have seen more hip replacements than I can remember. Two things which doctors fail to mention to their patients before surgery.
1. Recovery time is always under stated.
2. Patients are rarely told that they will be up and out of bed the very next day. This obviously can come as a shock to most people, but gone are the days where patients spend days laid up in bed. A Physio plus an orderly will assist you with mobilising initially, and then further Physio may be required to get your full mobility back.

Recovery time can vary, but usually 4-6 weeks before you can do things like drive your car or tackle flights of stairs comfortably. If you need any assistance finding a good Orthopaedic surgeon, let me know.

Good luck mate.

I thought it is a good thing to get the joint moving again as soon as possible? I know I was up and walking (hobbling) around on my knee within hours of my semi-reconstruction back in '96.

Eag's
3rd May 2011, 05:01 PM
Correct henno, as I have stated above.

Hux
3rd May 2011, 05:02 PM
Mate has had one done twice - first time due to a car accident, 2nd time due to them stuffing the 1st one for sizing (he was in Canberra). First time when he was in his mid 30's.

Anotehr good mate has had both done with that sleeving process when he was 40. They preferred that so they could put off the replacements until he was a bit older.

Both are in good shape with no issues.

I will wait for the boss to get home and them PM you the names of a couple of the best hip men in Brisbane to get a referral to. She is DoN at Brisbane Private which is mainly ortho so most of the top orthopods work from there. She will have the names of all the best ones for outcomes.

One of my golf mates had one about a year ago, he is a chopper off about 33 or so, and he was gradually giving me all his money. Since the hip replacement, his handicap hasn't changed, but i am gradually giving him all his money back.

Its unbelievable how good he can hit it now compared to before.

I don't think she will know much about who admits to the opposition - I will see if any have rooms out of the City anyway. Just go to a decent hospital even if it means travel. Its not as though you will be in there for long...couple of days and they will toss you out and tell you to start physio.

I actually supply hip and knee replacement systems.... and thus work with a lot of the surgeons here in perth. Most of he of the implants are very good these days... Knowing what i know i would definitely be going for an uncemented stem. The main thing to assure is that you have a good surgeon. Where are you located? I can find out for you from our local team who is regarded as the best in the business.....

PeteyD
5th May 2011, 09:56 AM
Pretty sure I am fine as far as getting the good surgeon is, being married to an RN, and having the advice from Hux's missus etc.

What is an uncemented stem ? Initial consultation is on June so a fair bit away.

I have now read it! Thanks Eags. I suspected recovery time would be a while. What I have read all said up and about and using the day after so they must be communicating that better now. Stairs are painful at the moment so I might not notice that much difference!!

The hip stem (the bit they jam down your thighbone after cutting off the head of your humerous) can either be cemented in using a bio inert resin, or can be coated with a coating that the bone will attach to. The uncemented stems have excellent longevity as they behave more like part of your body than a stem sitting on a cement mantle.

The cup can be either cenented or uncemented as well and again i'd recommend uncemented...

You can have either a metal head going into a polyethylene cup, or a ceramic head going into a ceramic cup. There is metal on metal as well but they have been failing lately so steer clear of those. The ceramic on ceramic have the best wear rates, but there is a small risk of shattering the head if you do something crazy. The metal heads with poly liners cant shatter, but will wear out eventually, and the wear debris can cause problems with your bone. Dont be alarmed, all of these options (barring metal on metal) do work very well, and after your initial soreness and rehab your hip pain will be mostly if not entirely gone. PM me if you want to have a chat and pick my brains...

With many thanks to Mrs Hux, I went in to see Lawrie M today. Interestingly, the reason for my problems is a genetic thing, where my femur has no neck, and therefore cannot rotate in the socket properly. This also means that the left one will go at some stage.

Anyway, essentially on Sept 7 I am going in for a replacement. Nice 4 day holiday in the expensive hotel. Nice 2.5k gap and aneathetist bill, but the health fund picks up the other 20k or so for the stay in hospital and the bits. The bad news for me is no golf for about 6 months. Definitely no champs for me this year, and this probably rules out next years Wynnum cup. However, I shall be back bigger and stronger with some hip turn and muscles in my right leg.

Still on pretty strong pain relief and blood thinning drugs.

They can't guaranty same length, as they lop pff the top of the femur. Difference can end up being a cm or 2 which would be sucky. 1 mm is pretty good.

Update time.

Things are going along nicely. Legs are pretty much the same length, which was my biggest concern. Right side is still lazy so the physio has all sorts of fun exercises, mainly pool work which I have to start up.

Main things are very little pain in the hip area, no back pain at all (it used to get very sore from standing up etc). Could not be happier with it.

I managed to have a bit of a bash around at the champs, although I could not play properly, but I got there which was great. And my playing partners were very tolerant of me both days.

Looking like I'll reactivate the club membership in December, and hopefully be playing before xmas. Otherwise January.
