Those lines that really catch your fancy, and that can sometimes turn a song from enjoyable to a favourite.

I am a huge fan of Kele Okereke's work on the sophomore album A Weekend in the City and in particular.

I am trying to be heroic
In an age of modernity
I am trying to be heroic
As all around me history sinks

What are others?

One of my old favourite Propagandhi songs.
Swastikas and Klan-robes. Sexist, racist, homophobes. Aryan-Nations and Hammerskins: you can wear my nuts on your nazi chins! God, I love a man in uniform! (But, uh, before we get too intimate here, big fella): what exactly are the great historical accomplishments of "your" race that make you proud to be white? Capitalism? Slavery? Genocide? Sitcoms? Guns? War? Pollution? Addiction? NAFTA? Thigh-Master? This is your ****ing white-history, my "friend". So why don't we start making a history worth being proud of and stat fighting the real ****ing enemy: the white male capitalist supemacist. Swastikas and Klan-robes. Sexist, racist, homophobes. This one's for the "Master Race": my brown-power ass in your white-power face! Kill them all and let a Norse God sort 'em out!

Before my daughter could understand what I was saying, I used to sing her 'Sympathy for the Devil' as a lullaby. Rob hated me doing that....

"Remember what they say: there's no shortcut to a dream. It's all blood and sweat and life is what you manage in between." - Broken Bells, October.

Funnily enough, the Broken Bells song Citizen (http://Citizen) has lyrics that I find a perfect description for this really upsetting massacre I covered for the Daily Mail while I was living in England. As though it was written about it, except that it was released beforehand. I find that equal parts cathartic and disturbing, even now.

The whole of A New England (http://[URL="http://www.lyricsfreak.com/b/billy+bragg/new+england_20018174.html)by Billy Bragg.

"I look into your eyes and I want to get to know ya and then you make this noise and it's apparent it's all over." - Lilly Allen, Not Fair.

All of Satisfied Mind (http://Satisfied Mind) done by Jeff Buckley on Sketches...)

"If you never stop when you wave goodbye, you just might find if you give it time you'll wave hello again. You just might wave hello again. And that's the way this wheel keeps working now." - John Mayer, Wheel.

"I miss you like my left arm that's been lost in a war. Today I dream of home and not of London anymore." - The Waifs, London Still. It was always tough when that one came on while I was living in London and feeling a bit homesick.

"If I was to stick it to any singer in showbiz, it'd be Jennifer Lopez, and Puffy you know this. Sorry Puff but I wouldn't give a f**k if that chick was my own mother, I'd still f**k her with no rubber, cum inside her and have a son and a new brother at the same time and just say that it ain't mine!" - Eminem, I'm Back.

There's about a million more...

Mate of mine was a big Pogues fan, and while they don't do much for me you just can't help but love a song that contains this
"You're a bum, You're a punk, You're an old slut on junk, Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed. You scumbag, you maggot, You cheap lousy faggot. Happy Christmas your arse, I pray God it's our last". Fairytale of New York.

This entire song is amazing, as are most Elbow tracks. Mirrorball:

We took the town to town last night
We kissed like we invented it
And now I know what every step is for
To lead me to your door

Know that while you sleep
Everything has changed

We made the moon our mirrorball
The streets, an empty stage
The city sirens violins
Everything has changed

Pink Floyd...

Brain Damage:
And if the cloud bursts, thunder in your ear
You shout and no one seems to hear.
And if the band you're in starts playing different tunes
I'll see you on the dark side of the moon.

Comfortably Numb:
There is no pain you are receding
A distant ship, smoke on the horizon.
You are only coming through in waves.
Your lips move but I can't hear what you're saying.

Learning to Fly:
There's no sensation to compare with this
Suspended animation, a state of bliss
Can't keep my mind from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earthbound misfit, I

Dogs of War:
Dogs of war and men of hate
With no cause, we don't discriminate
Discovery is to be disowned
Our currency is flesh and bone

and my fave....Wish you Were Here:
So, so you think you can tell
Heaven from Hell,
Blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field
From a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

Did they get you to trade
Your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
And cold comfort for change?
Did you exchange
A walk on part in the war,
For a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl,
Year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found
The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

I could go on...I think every Pink Floyd song has gems in them. Shine On, Keep Talking, The Final Cut, The Fletcher Memorial Home, The Great Gig in the Sky, Poles Apart.....I could go on.

There's a warm summer breeze makes the red poppies dance
And look how the sun shines from under the clouds
There's no gas, no barbwire, there's no guns firing now
But here in this graveyard it's still no man's land
The countless white crosses stand mute in the sand
To man's blind indifference to his fellow man
To a whole generation that were butchered and damned.

Eric Bogle "No Man's Land aka The Green Fields of France"

Mark Heard - In my opinion, wrote like an Elvis Costello/Bob Dylan and sounded like a cross between Lindsay Buckingham and James Taylor. 20 years after his passing I still love his work. Here's two of my faves.

House of Broken Dreams

Hear the whistle blow
It echoes down my soul
It's something I have always known
Nothing sounds so sad
A cry to the unknown
The fundamental sigh of all who've gone this way before

Lay me down to sleep
Come and comfort me
I'll sleep in peace
In a house of broken dreams

I'm old enough to know
That dreams are quickly spent
Like a pouring rain on warm cement
Or fingerprints in dust
Nectar on the wind
Save them for tomorrow and tomorrow lets you down again

Give me the reasons to go on
Soften the sorrow that shatters and bends
And mend broken dreams

Sentimental hearts
Hungry for the past
Penniless at the wishing-well
Memories will last
And cover certain scars
Acquired in the daily grind of being what we are

Waiting for a Reason

He bears his childhood scars
With a sense of injustice
Not unlike the Russians’
Each time he shoots from the heart
He holds his breath
And waits for repercussions

He’d like to trust someone
He’d like to love someone
But he’s waiting, waiting
Waiting for a reason

He fills his Freudian pools
With crocodile tears
Brought on nervous leisure
He kills his lovers with thoughts
Suspecting the worst
He cannot take the pressure

He’d like to trust someone
He’d like to love someone
But he’s waiting, waiting
Waiting for a reason

He finds no mercy
And he’s lost in the crowd
With an armored heart of metal
He finds he’s running out
Of odd-numbered daisies
From which to pull the petals

He’d like to trust someone
He’d like to love someone
But he’s waiting, waiting
Waiting for a reason

Good Golly Miss Molly and boats
Hammersmith Palais, the Bolshoi Ballet
Jump back in the alley, add nanny goats

Eighteen-wheeler Scammels, Domineker camels
All other mammals plus equal votes
Seeing Piccadilly, Fanny Smith and Willy
Being rather silly and porridge oats

A bit of grin and bear it, a bit of come and share it
You're welcome, we can spare it, yellow socks
Too short to be haughty, too nutty to be naughty
Going on forty, no electric shocks

Squeeze me macaroni by Mr Bungle

I wanna lock Betty Crocker in the kitchen
And knock her upper during supper
Clutter up her butter gutter
Hostess Ding Dong wrapped an eggroll around my wong
While Dolly Madison proceded to ping my pong
Your Milky Way is M'n'M in your britches
And I'll tell you Baby Ruth it looks mighty delicious
Keep blowing my gum, cuz here I come
I'm gonna get you all sticky with my Bubble Yum

Knick knack paddywhack and give your dog a bone, baby

I was givin' some head to some french bread
It was a four course orgy on the spread of my bed
French kissin' french fries in my Fruit of the Looms
I get deeper penetration with a fork and a spoon

I got yogurt meat loaf smeared all over my ass
I stick my weiner in two buns and and then give it the gas
Sour cream from my spleen into Levi jeans
Gonna bust the seams with my refried beans

Ronald McDonald just loves to be fondled
With Big Mac he'll **** it like a Chicken McNugget
Colonel Sanders wants to goose Granny's loose caboose
He's gonna give her a boost with that Kentucky fried juice
Sooper doop poop scoop, loop de loop, chicken coop
Shoot some hoop, top sirloin from the groin
Topped with dick cheese, sneeze, wheeze,
From the skeez disease, wooi!

Take a dump, baby, squirt some gravy
Pour some sugar on me, honey, make it brown & runny
Give a little Flavor Flav, back from the grave
Gonna burn some toast, pump some humpin' rump roast

Knick knack paddywhack, jump in the sack, in fact
Jerk the smack and crack Jack from the back
Bananarama or ramabanana
****in' Barry Manilow on the Copa Cabana

Squeeze me macaroni, slop your face with my bologna

You gotta syphon the spinach, you gotta cream the corn
Sperm scrambles the eggs and a meal is born
Cookin' like a beginner, but I'm goin' up in her
I had Fritos for lunch I'm havin' bush for dinner
Chef Boyardee and the Three Muskateers
Shove Charleston Chews in their rears like queers
"Holy moly, guacamole!" said my Chips Ahoy
I'm gonna pinch a ravioli on the Pillsbury dough boy

Knick knack paddywhack and give your dog a boner, baby

We came to pottie...we came to pottie down your throat

At the moment it's a Adelaide band called the Grenadiers
The songs called Good Advice, and the line is "Walk that line, walk that ****en line, he took it easier with time, but like the man in black says, you gotta walk that line"
Sums up a lot of things for me the last few days!

Girl, before I met you I was F.I.N.E. Fine
but your love made me a prisoner, yeah my heart's been doing time
You spent me up like money, then you hung me out to dry
It was easy to keep all your lies in disguise
Cause you had me in deep with the devil in your eyes

Love Aerosmith.

A funny-looking dog with a big black nose
He flew into the sky to seek revenge
But the Baron shot him down

The poor kid, an advertiser
What a tragic waste of potential
Being a junkie's not so good, either"

What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

Hurt by Nine Inch Nails and immortalised by Johnny Cash

Couldn't agree more Daves, one of my all time favourite songs. Not a big Nine Inch Nails or J.Cash fan, I rate this the best thing that Johnny Cash has ever done, and an amazing film clip to go out on.

Went too fast
Way too soon.
I feel disgusted and you should to.
Its no good when all that's left is the sex.
The sex.
Sex has become all I know about you.
Memories of those filthy things that we do.
There's not one single thought that is left
after sex with you.Should've left my pants on this time,
but instead you had to let me dive right in.
Should've left my pants on this time.
You let me dive right, you let me dive right in...
