View Full Version : Snapped my Achilles tendon

goonie
10th March 2011, 12:19 AM
Snapped my Achilles tendon tonight playing squash, have to get an ultrasound tomorrow and then see the specialist, but it looks like it's completely seperated, so 8 weeks in a cast, then rehab and take it easy for a few more months :-(

Anyone else been through this?

No, I had a fair few issues with them when I was a teenager but thankfully never snapped them! All the best mate that is a nasty injury.

Surely you require surgery to reattach it?

I find out tomorrow, but there are 2 options, surgery and then a cast, or just a cast and allow the tendon to heal by its self, I thought surgery was the only way too.

Sorry to hear that goonie. My younger brother did his in Dec '09 and needed to go the surgery option. We were playing touch football and he was just running backwards in defense. The next week one of our friends did theirs as well in a ladies game on the same ground.

His name on here is pistoltas if you need to ask him any questions about rehab etc.

Happened to a mate of mine in early November - he's back on the course after surgery, but still moving a bit gingerly. So a couple of months would be the minimum break, I would think.

Hope it all goes well.

Thats a bad one goonie. If it's completely seperated you'll need surgery to attached the two ends of the tendon or the tendon back to the bone. If you ruptured it, cast, exercises, massage etc for months.

I ruptured mine badly twice. I could put the end of my little finger into the tear. The rupture runs vertically on the achilles. It tooks ages for it to feel better again. There's a long process ahead of you.

Was it your left leg?

Left leg, I was stopping or pushing off the back wall of the squash court when it suddenly felt and sounded like I had smashed the back of my foot against the glass wall, I knew I hadn't hit the wall and something was wrong straight away, I took the weight off my foot and it was just sort of hanging there and soft where the tendon should be tight. Time to call the ambulance.

Specialist suggested repairing using a LARS synthetic tendon, 10 days with a cast, then walking in a brace for about 6 weeks, then physio, so looking at about 6 months before full strength is back if all goes well, but being back on my feet in ten days sounds better than an eight week cast, plus I shouldn't lose as much muscle strength.

AndyP
10th March 2011, 03:13 PM
Isn't the LARS stuff still risky? I think a couple of AFL players have had it done on their knees, got away with a couple of seasons, then the knee has gone again. If you haven't already, you might want to look into it.

I will look into it of course, I don't know about the knees, but the one for the achilles it is designed to assist the tendon to regrow and then the tendon takes over.

When I ruptured mine a couple of times the doctor told me an interesting fact. If you're right handed you are generally right side dominant in a physical sense. Same goes for left. For some reason a huge percentage of right handers do their left achilles and vice versa. The theory is that being right handed/right side dominant you step off your left foot a lot harder, more often, and put more pressure on it and eventually SNAP :smt073

Goonie, I did mine about 10 years ago. 12 weeks in a cast and then about the same at the physio getting the movement and strength back.
Good news is apart from being a bit stiff in the morning it is back to normal. ie can do everything I was doing before the injury golf, running etc.
You must have surgery otherwise it will limit what you can do after recovering and you'll probably have a limp. I had the traditional surgery so not sure how the Lars would be.
Good luck it is a shocking injury but you'll be fine in time.

I had my operation around 2pm this afternoon, everything went well, overnight stay, visit by the doc and physio tomorrow and then the long road to recovery. The doc did say one thing tonight, there was a big gap, over 3cm, I hope it doesn't mean the recovery will take a lot longer.

Just panadine forte and nurophen, but I have no pain yet, I have been lucky in that department only experencing bad pain for about 10-15mins roughly 30mins after I did it, and some mild pain when I bump my leg or can't it in a comfy position. Maybe i'm just tough :-)

I am really glad the pain has been good because I still have mental scars from when I had kidney stones, but thats another story.

Specialist said that a full snap can fairly painless, as with mine, but a major tear is very painful, I am guessing that rehab isn't going to be fun thou.

As someone that's done partial tears as well as a full snap of ankle tendons (not Achilles) the partial tears hurt more but healed quicker. The full tear hurt far less, but took much longer to recover. Choose your poison.

That much? Wow!

I usually drop 5-6kg in 4-5 days when I have my yearly hospital visit, and I don't weight that much. I can assure you that a lot of it is muscle and a real lot of it is fluid. Luckily most of it comes back pretty easily.

It's difficult to drop that much fat that quickly merely "sitting around" without affecting a). Muscle mass, b). Metabolism. If goonie was out running marathons every day it might be a different story, although even then unless you weight 200kg (and therefore body fat percentage wise it MIGHT be ok.. maybe) losing 1kg+ per DAY is less than ideal.

goonie
25th March 2011, 03:57 PM
I am sure that some loss is muscle in my left leg (but my right leg may be getting bigger with the extra work), I think I can notice that my left thigh is a little smaller than the right, but my gut is smaller and the missus has made a few comments that she can see it in my face also, and I have also noticed that my clothes are looser, I have been very good with my diet, and getting around on crutches is hard work for someone of my weight, and really works the arms, core and working leg, plus my balance on one leg is pretty amazing now.
I was only off the fluids and food for a bit over half a day so I don't think fluid has anything to do with it and I didn't lose any weight in the first week.

I have managed to lose weight fairly quickly in the past by changing my Diet and nothing else, but not quite this fast.

henno
25th March 2011, 04:14 PM

If you say so. :? Either way, I maintain that losing 1% of your body weight per day is bad news no matter what you're losing. You just can't strip off 1kg of fat alone per day; it's as simple as that.

25th March 2011, 05:09 PM
Day of Operation -
I didn't drink or eat from 6am as instructed (got up to have an early breaky), had Op around 1pm, was drinking water not long after getting back to my room, and had dinner at normal hospital time around 6-6.30pm, had another snack of sandwiches before bed, and also went to the toilet before I went to bed meaning I had plenty of fluid in my system, they also removed the drip around or just after dinner. I went thru 3-4 600ml bottles of water before I left at around 11am the next morning. Eating (although a lot less) and drinking has been normal since and due to having had Kidney Stones in the past I drink 2-3+ litres of water a day. I know I am not doing a lot atm but I work in IT, so apart from 2 5min walks to the train station and walking around the office, it's not that physical and I am generally sitting on my arse most of the day.
So I would love to know what massive fluid loss your talking about keeping in mind I weighted my self 3 days after my Op and was my normal recent weight.

henno
25th March 2011, 07:20 PM
Well then you've stumbled on a magical secret you should sell to the masses. Being able to lose 1kg+ per day while sitting on your bum and not have it be mostly fluid or muscle is the holy grail of weight loss.

"I'll have what he's having."

goonie
25th March 2011, 07:57 PM
I'm sure some of it is muscle as I said before, but I know some of it isn't, next week will tell the true story as the first week is normally the best week when dieting from memory and the drop won't be as big each week after, and maybe it's because I have plenty to lose :-)
Next week I get my Boot/Brace fitted and I will be able to walk again, I'm sure with more walking around my normal hunger will return.

30th March 2011, 03:41 PM

Started to walk today, more like a hobble, expecting a very sore foot and leg tomorrow. Also I have lost another 2.5kg, the rapid drop has slowed as expected but I am still losing weight, 10kg so far.
I'm also going to try and go back to work this week,it should be very interesting.

26th April 2011, 02:48 PM
Been back at work for 3 weeks now, and should only have to use the boot for another 2 weeks, although I have already been walking around at home without it for nearly a week and a half.

I have my first physio appt tomorrow night, i'm hoping to get a better idea of the recovery timeframe, and how long before I can start any type of golf, I can already putt and chip in the back room, but can only manage a very unbalanced full swing :-(

I have also lost 12kg now, and I am pretty sure the doc wants me to start working out at the gym in a few weeks to build my left leg back up, so hopfully I can keep the weight loss going.

Only just saw this thread. Bugger mate, that'd kill me, and sink my business. One of my tri mates did his before Noosa over a year ago. The only good thing about it was that he was a tall and lanky guy, and at least for a short time it looked like he had one calf muscle cause it was all bunched up the top! Hope things keep getting better. No wonder you were so pissed aobut tapatalk. You were bored!

OK so everything has was going very well, I nearly have full flexability back, i have been working on building strength back in my leg for the last 3 weeks, i can pretty much walk normally again, I even went to the range for the first time on tuesday night with no issues at all.

But after fighting off a chest infection this week and not feeling the best late in the week my leg started getting sore on thursday afternoon, it gets even worse on friday morning, late friday afternoon most of the scar on my leg has gone red and i have a big lump there as well, i have aches all over and my skin tingles, my hands start getting cold and i get a temp, i head to the hospital at 8.30pm, temp is 39.4, after waiting several hours i finally see a doctor, she has no idea what she is doing so she goes and finds a more senior doctor, he says I need IV antibiotics then I can go home and come back Sat evening for a review and more antibiotics, the hopeless doctor has 2 attempts to but the drip thing in my hand before she thinks it might be best to get someone else to do it (never had an issue before) get the antibiotics done and leave and get home at 1am.
Crawl out of bed this morning at about 10am, look at my leg and it looks the same, by 1-2pm i notice my lower leg/foot has swollen and is even more red with lots of little reds spots on my foot and calf, so off to hospital again, have to wait again but not to long as i was a review patient, doctors decide I need to to stay overnight and get stronger antibiotics every 6 hours, so I am now sitting in a short stay bed after my first lot of drugs, and due for more at midnight, and with the noise and light I don't think much sleeping will happen, Yeah :-(

Sorry for the novel but i'm bored as sitting in this hospital bed, might watch some tv shows on my phone now.

I haven't snapped mine Goonie, but have badly strained it - been doing physio for about 5 weeks.

Slowly getting better, but it's a bastard of an injury. I've been on the range today and practising in bunkers - a little sore tonight, but not too bad. Hoping to get 9 on Friday, haven't played for 4 weeks.

But I'm sure that's nothing compared to yours. Hope it comes good for you.
