Brendan Jones is first up against Phil in the Ben Hogan division. It would be nice to see him cause an upset.

I agree. Hopefully it will be an interesting match, although Tiger has been knocked out early in events like this before.

Will his new swing stand up to the pressure?

Geoff Ogilvy vs. Padraig Harrington should be another good match to watch.

This is my favourite event of the year but can't help but think it's a bit of a fizzer for at least 32 players! One round and you're gone!
Could a format re-jig a bit like the Surf Coast Knockout be the way to go? Maybe two rounds of stroke to determine the final 32? Just a thought.

I am competing in the GOLFWEEK Matchplay challenge. You had to pick your winners for the whole draw prior to the start of the tourney.

I have 19 winners from the 32 matches, one outstanding at the moment which is the Z Johnson v J Rose match.

Winners so far
Westwood, Watney, Schwartzel, Donald, Kaymer, Karlsson, Mahan, McIIroy, Palmer, Jimenez, Phat Phil, Fowler, Kuchar, McDowell, Bjorn, Ogilvy, Watson, Day and Homes.

I tipped Ogilvy to win it and have 28 putts

Scoring per winning pick
Round Points
Rd 1 1
Rd 2 2
Rd 3 4
Rd 4 16
Winner 64

Tie Breaker = amount of putts the winner had

Just dug some more, Fowler played 34 events last year for 3.4 mill in prizemoney, Day played 25 for 2.9 mill. Villegas played 29 for 3.2 mill and is ranked 43 !

What else has this kid done to deserve a no 33 world ranking ?

Iain
25th February 2011, 01:08 PM
2010 - 20 of 28 cuts, 7 top 10's and 10 top 25's.

Where should he be? What should the 33 ranked player have achieved?

3oneday
25th February 2011, 01:17 PM
It says he played 34 events ? what happened in the other 6 ?

My only point is how can someone who has played for a year be deserving of such a high ranking ? Why is Villegas lower ? didn't he win 3 times the previous year ?

Then again, based on your numbers Tiger should be 150 or so

Hux
25th February 2011, 01:41 PM
2010 - 20 of 28 cuts, 7 top 10's and 10 top 25's.

Where should he be? What should the 33 ranked player have achieved?

71% of cuts is pretty reasonable...not a young Tiger but not exactly a cellar dweller.
Top 10 finish on 35% of the cuts made makes him pretty good.

However, Is he that much better than Jason Day or other young players? IMHO No
Eg:

Day: 24 played
Cuts made: 18 (75%)
Top 10's: 5 (first & second)
Top 25's: 11

Rory:

82% cuts made
Top 10's: 8
Top 25: 13

So he's good but hasn't coverted top 10's to wins unlike at least two of his peer's.

Personally I like his play and although his appearance is grating to me as an old fart he speaks well and his attitude seems pretty reasonable as well....far from a big head which is appearance seems to give.

He is better than run of the mill for sure.

25th February 2011, 02:30 PM
World Rankings is also based on the Strength of the field. The Makoyoba Classic will not have as many ranking points as the Matchplay Champioship.

So if Fowler finished Top 10 in Strong Fields and in WGC/MAJORS this is worth a lot more than a top 10 or even top 5 is the Children Miracle Classic.

So you cannot look at Stats alone (ie. Cuts made etc.) but the competition he was up against.

25th February 2011, 02:42 PM

Should the German win his semifinal match, he not only will move into Sunday’s final, he’ll also assure himself of overtaking Lee Westwood at the top. Kaymer is currently No. 2 but only needs to reach the finals (not win it) to become No. 1.
