Helensvale Golf Club in trouble? Anyone got any inside info on this one (or is this old news)?

OUTRAGED Helensvale residents are demanding Gold Coast City Council (http://www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au/) fix a drainage problem that threatens to close Helensvale Golf Course (http://www.helensvalegolf.com.au/).
More than 300 residents and club members gathered at the golf course's clubhouse last night fearing the 35-year-old club could fold within months if the matter is not fixed urgently.
Meeting organiser Robert Hall said the club was drowning.
"There is a blockage to the flow of water that used to run naturally to Lake Coombabah," he said.
"What we leased originally was a drainage reserve, now it is a water storage area.
"In times of rain it becomes a lake. In the days and weeks that follow it becomes a foul, stinking swamp with marsh grasses that cannot be mowed because of bogging of the machinery."
Mr Hall said committee members had approached the council several times for help but had only been offered excuses.
"Every time we have sought help we encounter buck-passing," he said.
"Our argument is that the council is in breach of the lease and has been in breach since day one and even before that.
"That long-term breach entitles us to damage amounting to millions."
Bernie Ryan, a club member since 1986, said lives could be lost if the blockage wasn't fixed.
"What will happen if we have the amount of rain that Toowoomba or Brisbane recently had?" he asked.
"We would lose a lot of houses in this area and lives could also be lost."
Councillor John Wayne said fixing the problem was a State Government issue.
Member for Coomera MP Michael Crandon (http://www.crandon4coomera.com.au/index_flash.html) said he would take the matter to Parliament.

Blakey has mentioned the drainage issue on more than one occasion.

Yes it is old news.

Surprised that this meeting wasnt advertised to members :-( Though it seems not an official meeting as public attended. We are actually having an members information night on Monday night, where the board will keep us up to date with happenings, so I am not really concerned with claims that the club will go broke. All reports over the last 12 months are that the cash flow is remaining positive.

The article is correct, the golf course land collects all the water from the all around the town of Helensvale, and from there it flows into the swamp then Coombabah lake. Since the Railway line was built the water is not clearing into the lake fast enough and back floods the golf course - mainly the 1st hole. The swamp is controlled by the conservation commission ( i think ) and it is full of debris that is also preventing water flow through it.

For many years now the Council, Conservation commission, State and the Railways seem to keep passing the buck to each other, or they say that they understand the issue but we cant consider a resolution in the near future.

Detailed information and a positive outlook in the April 2011 newsletter.

We have a retired judge on the board who is using his skills to force the councils hand, and in future the State govt and Railways. Also it seems that council (or the councilor) is no longer recalcitrant about our plight.

Basically we are maintaining their open space for them for free, and they/he were under the impression that if we folded they could just resume the course, but they did not realise we own our clubhouse, carpark area etc. We could still run a licensed sports club with pokies and they would have no access to their golf course if we let it go.

When Bernie speaks at the club meetings he usually does not ask for the microphone.
