So what set would you play?

petethepilot's 1957 Muiras are the sexiest irons I have seen first hand, simply gorgeous to look at.

Very interesting Gaz, from the website it says "MP-68's scalloped muscle back and shorter hosel allow a lower, more centered COG location for a penetrating, workable ball flight", and I bet the clubface/toe is longer as well. Ping then Callaway discovered this technique years/decades ago, thus moving the COG to the centre instead of the heel making them the best selling irons of all time. Mizuno is playing catch up.

So what set would you play?Seriously - probably these, also shorter hosel and lower COG - but still not much different from what I have, and I am very confident that these are as good as anything that costs ten times more (more in some cases)

I have no way of being certain that the claimed higher performance characteristics and quality of such expensive Mizuno et al clubs are genuine. All we have is their advertising fluff :-) I'd prefer to use what i have and just spend more money on the fitting.

though there is a certain Epon driver with a Fine One T3 shaft at about $900 calling out my name, and it just goes so good - but i still feel dirty thinking about it.

Miuras for me. They are actually on the hit list for around the middle of the year. A bit of a present to myself for when the house build is finished.

Was surfing the net the other day to find a dealer/fitter in Sydney but the closest is a few hours away, at Maitland, going by the website.

I played with an old bloke a few weeks ago who was toting a really well looked after set of old pings, maybe ping zing2. For a minute there I almost turned into a club ho.

Probably not everybody's idea of sexy irons, but that's what I'd choose.

If I had to choose blades, I'd try to find a mint set of the old Wilsons I learned with. I've still got the three iron and I can't believe I could even hit a golf ball with a head that small.

The best looking irons at address that I have seen in person are the TM R9 B's, as far as general looks any mp33 style forged blades that aren't to busy with text and graphics.

For looks either MacGregor VIP's like Jack used or Titleist 681's. Though I do like the look of 690MB's.

To shoot my best score with, Ping G whatever's (2, 5, 15, whatever).

Edit: I forgot my all time favourites: '99 Hogan Apex.

I have a set of the RAC Combo's waiting to be made up (at some point)...3-6 of the RAC CB's and 6-PW of the MB's (there IS an extra 6 iron!). I also have the RAC 54 & 60 wedges (brand new).

i have seen the new ones, but not a fan. Looks like they've whacked a big hex bolt on the back of them.

the '02's were a satin finish as well, not a chrome look. Very similar to the Z and rac wedges currently on offer.

If i ever saw the 02 model for sale, they would be snapped up instantly.

They are from the same factory (and same dies) as the Geotech model...in fact it is the same die as the Scratch AR1 (but they do the grinding/chroming themselves).

They're actually the RAC MB TP's from 2006 Rubin...the 'other' one in my pics is the original RAC MB from 2002-3.

I actually have a fully functioning set of those 3-PW with the Z TP Wedges!! And they are very nice indeed.

(And when I say fully functioning I obviously mean in the hands of someone else...)

I run a set of them too Rubin (via Braddles). They go alright and look good too. I agree if I had a choice the smoke ones would win in a battle between the two though.

Back to the original topic I haven't done too much research on this front, as coin is limited and mrs ks would definitely notice irons with Japanese characters on them, but the ones Courty posted early in the thread look fantastic.

Erm...whaddya think.
Similar or what?

the first two are obviously knock-offs
and i am pretty sure i have seen this exact design elsewhere also, Bridgestone/Srixon maybe and others

TourFit
28th January 2011, 11:51 AM
It looks 'similar' to the Srixon...but get them side by side and they are quite different. Haven't seen a Bridgestone like it.

The three models shown are almost certainly from the same die (or VERY NEARLY). I know that Scratch get their heads at a more raw stage and do their own custom grinds and finishes...and they use a slightly different steel billet to start with (1018 or S18C actually).

The reason is that the forging house have this as one of their own in-house designs (or open designs, as they call them). That means that the basic head can be ordered, with certain custom options such as finish, specific grooves, stampings & logos etc. As you can see I moved the 'Forged' stamp to the heel end of the cavity to make way for my logo, while it sits on the toe end of the Geotech...

They look a little too shiny to me.

They're really not bad at all...you are looking at the back of the club, in flouro lighting, with a flash. You wouldn't see any of that at address (unless you have an odd stance). The topline is pretty thin.

They do look a bit like my 506's.

Not if you have the 506's alongside them...same vague shape similarities only.
