2011 Vic Ozgolf Matchplay

Detail
Annual Ozgolf Matchplay event for the Mexicans.
After closing date for interest, Bruce and myself will draw 1st round matches out of the hat. Matches will then be posted here. Round 1 will have a cut off date of (more than likely end of March).

Round 2 will consist of all round 1 match winners (if odd number of entries some players may get auto entry to second round i.e. last years winner. Round 2 will have a cut off date of (more than likely end of June).

Round 3 will consist of all round 2 match winners (if odd number of entries lucky losers get auto entry to third round) Round 3 will have a cut off date of (more than likely end of September).

All subsequent rounds will be determined after final numbers have been confirmed.

Format is handicapped matchplay i.e. one player has a handicap of 18 and the opponent has a handicap of 15 then the 18 h'caper will get a shot on the 3 hardest holes.

It is advisable to organise golf days in an attempt to get multiple matches completed on the one day, also those new Ozgolf members can get to know other Victorian golfers, (all Interstate Ozgolfers are most welcome to play in these days if they are in town)

It is the reponsibility of both players of a match to coordinate the playing of said match.

Those players that do not have an official handicap are welcome to play, a handicap must be nominated by them prior to teh match in line with their ability. If a hustler is found within the ranks, I reserve the right to do something REALLY REALLY REALLY humiliating to them.

Anything not clear let me know.

Thanks Dennis, all fixed. DAMN Copy and Paste.

I have no way of verifiying handicaps unless people post a link to their GolfLink page. i.e. We need to rely on people's honesty.

Those that don't have a handicap have to be honest about there ability and to my knowledge that has been the case in the Vic Matchplay event to date. I don't remember playing any bushrangers, although I do remember playing V205 one year and he played out of his skin.

Unless he happens to beat you with a good round Dennis, at which point will you start calling him a cheat too?

You may think you're being funny calling my integrity into question but I don't find it humorous, for somebody who gets very precious over the posting of his address you didn't think engaging your brain before your keyboard might have been a good idea?

For those that have not competed before don't be concerned about your standard of play or lack of handicap.

Why not, every competition needs a bye. Last time I played in this I got knocked out by Andigold's double bogey on the 18th. Neither of us looked like a bandit on that hole.

My futile suggestion for getting a winner in this calendar year? Schedule the final now for the last week in November, maybe some sort of big Vic OzGolf day?

Why isn't Jim listed as a participant? If it's not good enough for him, it certainly would be up to my lofty standards. If Jim changes his mind and is in, then I am in as well, provided I don't have to go anywhere crappy to play, ie Southern etc.

I have a spreadsheet that you have use for a matchplay knock-out draw. Simply put the players in the left column in any order against the numbers 1 to 16 and the names will appear in the draw in random locations.

Not sure how to send an excel spreadsheet within the forum but I can certainly send it to a private email address.

Here is what it looks like:

chappy1970

These are the rankings for the Matchplay, I have based them on Handicap.

Those who did not paste a Golflink link, I have tried to rank you as best I can from what Bruce and myself know.

1. Willow - Pro
2. Jack - 2
3. Jim - 8
4. Mint - 9
5. Chappy – 10
6. Wools - 11
7. Crops23 – 14
8. Dennis - 16
9. Bruce – 16
10. IanO - 16
11. SeptemberSquall - 19
12. Flowergirl - 19
13. LarryLong - 19
14. Kev – 19
15. Andigold - 21
16. Johnny Boy

Bruce undertook a random draw thingymijig and came up with the following.

4 v 2
6 v 13
1 v 12
3 v 11
9 v 7

Therefore the first round matches are as follows.

chappy1970

Happy to include it Ian, but it's probably irrelavant as there needs to be an agreement by both parties as to where the match is played.
If either party is happy to play the match on their opponents home course then that is up to them.

I walked 18 for the first time yesterday Kev & I think we can set a date in the next month or so. What works for you? Do you want to make a day of it and see if we can get a few along or do you want to go it alone?

I'm happy to host at spring valley or we can go back to sunshine or one of the pay for plays like growling frog or eynesbury. Let me know what you'd prefer.

I was kicking around with Wools the idea of playing at a members course on the Mornington Peninsula rather than always playing at the $50+ premium rollercoaster public tracks like StAB etc. One thing I'm thinking is that smaller member clubs (like mine) probably need the support, so maybe we could pick a few of those as venues for OzGolf days. Hint, Hint, do you know of one anywhere near the Sorrento ferry terminal we could get on? :)

Wools and I were working on Sunday the 3rd, but we could look at the 17th if this would be good to get a few OzGolfers together and get some of these matches played.

I think it would be only fair for Willow to take on FG on her home track.

Bruce defeats crop23 5/4.

Finally I get past the first round. Crops was a little unwell and I jumped out of the blocks to be 4 up after 4 when I chipped in for a par. I gave him a codral on the 7th tee and it kicked in nicely for him as he surged up 9, 10 and 11 sstiffing long irons to inside 2 feet twice.

Leongatha is a pretty good course and I recommend it to you.

I can pick anyone up from the ferry at Sorrento - happy to.
There are great bbq facilities at the course so I'd be happy to provide a bbq afterwards.
Chappy - Willow - are you happy to play our matches there? I know that gives us a home ground advantage but hey - we'll provide you with a snag and a beer afterwards!!!
It would be great to get as many Vic Ozgolfers together as possible regardless if you have a match to play or not.

Johnny boy and flowergirl played their love battle today at rosebud park. Johnny had the early advantage with four very good opening holes to be two up. Then three pars in a row got me to one up. Johnny wasted a chance on the eighth with bad putting and completely stuffed up the ninth to give me two up at the turn.
We then squared the next five holes both playing better than our handicaps. The 15th saw Johnny have five shots in the bunker - pressure was too much - dormie - then the square on the 16th was enough to prove who is really the superior member of the partnership!!!
Willow- gorne Johnny boy - gorne. Who's next???? :) :)

Well, SeptemberSquall and I had it out today and the golf was ... how should I put it ... terrible (on my part anyway). We turned with me 3 holes down and it took to the 12th before we actually squared a hole. Anyway I lost 4 and 3. Well done SeptemberSquall.

Today was what military strategists call a war of attrition.

Essentially, we played a rubbish brand of army golf, each winning holes when our opponent came unstuck, grinding it out until holes simply ran out.

As Ian said, no hole was squared until 12, so there was plenty of 'coming unstuck' to go around.

Better luck next time Ian, when you got a few away off the tee late in the round you showed that there was heaps better form on offer.

Any round-of-8 matches still unplayed?

It falls to the victor for the write up by convention.

1 - Bruce is genuinely surprised to lose a ball on his tee shot and leaves SS to ease into the match with an easy win.
2- Bruce drives through the green while SS lays up. SS goes out the back then blades one out the front. Up, up and down for par for Bruce for the win and back to SQ
3 - Bruce wonders if SS is regretting leaving his driver at home as he crushes another one into position A. SS can't reach the GIR and is short, then long then... Bruce wins the hole. B+1
4 - Bruce trickles off the back edge while SS misses short right. Nothing good can come of that. B+2
5 - SS hits the fairway trap on the left while Bruce misses the 100m wide fairway on the right. Both end up out the back of the green but Bruce is there for 2 and SS for 3. Neither makes the up and down but that is enough for a B win. B+3
6 - A rare moment of quality in this match as both players end up about 10 feet from the hole but neither can sink the bird. First time for a half. B+3
7 - Bruce makes a par that SS can't match. B+4
8 - SS makes a par while Bruce struggled out of the long right fairway bunker. B+3
9 - Another moment of quality although neither player can convert their birdie putts. B+3
10 - Bruce hits one of the biggest drives of his life and has less than 90m in. SS pushes a couple and concedes while Bruce is in the back bunker for 2. He may regret that. B+4 and things are looking dire.
11 - Both players miss the green left. Bruce is able to find his ball, whereas SS's ball is unsighted until walking up the path on a conceded hole. This was a real injustice as SS only just fell off the green whereas I yanked mine badly. B+5
12 - Bruce decides to play back down the 5th while SS is struggling off the tee and into the fairway trap. Bruce's bogey putt in conceded but SS has already had 6 shots to this point. B+6 dormie.
13 - Bruce hooks his tee shot and will never see that ball again. SS misses his par putt but that is enough to win the hole and get back moving in the right direction. B+5 dormie.
14 - SS ends up going down the low road and Bruce misses this 120m wide fairway on the right. SS sportingly find the ball and Bruce is able to get it on the green while SS just falls off the right edge. Handshakes time.

Thanks for coming down mate. I'm 100% certain you didn't bring your A game, nor even your B game today. Hope to see you out again soon.

The 25th will work for me Reenie, I should have most of the chores off the list by then. :) Do you want to play at a neutral venue like eynesbury or the growling frog etc.?

I've barely played for the last 4 or 5 weeks so if I was ever going to lose to a skirt this may be the only time. :)

Hiya Andi :)
Just book something for us. Probably this side of the city - would prefer not to have to drive too far.

So come on all you Victorians!!!!!!!! Where the bloody hell are you all. Come and support the match between the shorts and the skirt!!!

When you get a time how about starting up a new thread and see if we can get some more takers.

Flowergirl - I reckon I'm a doubtful starter - mostly because my mate bought a cudo or scoopon deal for Heidelberg - and there are 4 of us due to play, and I think that Sunday is the last day we can use it.

That's why I have to commit to it - we've been told we'll get on, but won't find out for certain until the sheets open on the Sunday or Monday.

But I'd love to be included if we fall over for some reason - and I don't mean to make it sound like a consolation prize!

I'll let you guys know as soon as I do. Obviously if someone else can definitely commit to the day, then the spot is theirs.

Failing that, I'd like to get in on the next day that is organised - always keen to get out for a hit with a new group.

I've got the kids that weekend, and social services would have a field day with me if I used them as caddies...
