SMS’s Australian PGA Championship Diary

Day One – Thursday 9/12/10

Tee time for today is 6.40am. Due to the fact that I haven’t actually met my new boss Daniel yet, I haven’t received my accreditation. Because of this, we decide that I should pick him up from his motel, rather than him take a courtesy car. As a result of this, the alarm goes off this morning at 4am. Faark me dead it is early. A quick shower, coffee and toast and I am out the door at 4.30am so I can pick Daniel up at 5.00am. He hands me my accreditation which includes a $10 voucher for food. I find out later that this voucher only just covers the $9 charged for a ham and cheese sandwich.

We dither about for a little while before hitting the range at 5.30am. We find a bay between Craig Parry and Andrew Buckle (who goes on to take the day one lead at 8 under). Two chicks are surveying every bag to see what type of equipment everyone is using (one has the biggest rack seen on a golf course driving range in some time). All is quite casual with a few jokes being shared amongst competitors. As far as I can tell, Daniel is well known and well liked amongst his peers. I find out one of the contributing reasons about an hour later.

We go to the chipping green for a while, and then about 10 minutes on the putting green. Warm up concludes with about a dozen bunker shots.

We get to the first which is a bit of a weird par 5 in that there is no real reason to hit driver unless you intend on risking an abortion of a start for the sake of chasing an improbable eagle. Daniel hits 3 wood into the right rough before laying up short of the water. Whilst we are walking down the fairway, out of the blue he starts discussing porn. Sweet. My kind of guy.

He then goes on to birdie the first and remarks that he is on track for 72 under. Another birdie at number two and I remark that most of the hard work is done. My remark may have been slightly premature as he made double on the third after having a brain implosion around the green.

Birdies follow at 5 and 6 and we turn 2 under. Daniel is getting himself into position off the tee quite a lot but is hitting some very average wedges which are going nowhere near the target.

We get around to the 14th hole still at a couple under. He then hits a filthy pull which lands in the water, and almost takes out the VW on the pontoon. Steam is coming out of his ears as he never committed to the shot and he knows it. We head to the drop zone and he hits another shitty wedge which was so bad it also goes wet. He takes a drop and hole and holes a 15 foot putt for triple. Nice save.

Pars follow without really threatening birdie until the 18th. 18 is a moll of a par 4 around water to a green guarded by, well, more water. After hitting the fairway we settle on a 8 iron starting at a sponsors sign with the slight breeze assisting his draw which might feed down the slope. A rank pull follows to 15 feet left of the pin. Very masculine line indeed. He calmly holes the putt for an even par round.

Anything under par should see us being there on the weekend. Hopefully it isn’t as humid tomorrow. It was frikkin hot out there today. I think Daniel and I drank at least 8 bottles of water and a couple of Powerades each. Thank Christ he had a carry bag.

I had no idea just what was expected of a caddy nor or the procedures. Thankfully I had the good sense to ask Daniel in the car what he wanted me to do, and perhaps more importantly what would piss him off. Things like which caddy needed to hold the flag, how the bunkers are raked, and cleaning balls for fellow-competitors when their caddy is busy where things I had not considered.

All up a very interesting experience. Hopefully one which is only a quarter of the way through.

SMS’s Australian PGA Championship Diary

Day Two – Friday 10/12/10

Back nine first. Much more respecatble time today (11.40am).

Daniel played ok on the back nine but not great. Pulled his tee shot on 18 and was about a metre short of carrying the water. After the drop he had 230m left into the wind and made double.

I'd like to say that I was the catalyst to him shooting 3 under on the front nine was me talking him back to earth but that would just be bullshit. My contribution would be talking him out of hitting driver off the tee on the first (par 5). He hit hybrid which forced a lay up and then got up and down for birdie so that vindicated that call I guess. Pars followed at 2 and 3. Whilst walking down 4 the marshall told me that the cut was likely to be 1 under, perhaps even.

This left me in a dilemma, given that despite us working well for a day and a half, I had no idea whether he wanted to know or not. Until then we only discussed the cut on the first when we said 2 under would do it. I figured say nothing until he got back to even par. Didn't have long to wait as he holed a 20ft putt on the 4th for birdie to get back to even. Told him and to be honest I'm not sure I should have. He ended up suggesting that getting in on the number wasn't what he was looking for anyway.

What followed after that was very very impressive. Not exactly quality golf, but more a show of character as he ground it out. He wasn't hitting it great but still hitting greens. The problem at Coolum is if you hit it to 40ft all day you are in for so awful putts and that is what happened. He holed a 6ft par putt of 5. Same again on 6. Simple 2 putt par on 7. 10 ft par putt on 8. Still one behind the projected cut line.

We got to 9 and Daniel was about to pull driver. I couldn't see the sense and said so. Daniel saw things my way. To be honest he was probably tossing between the two. Straight up the guts and 9 iron remaining which he hit to 20ft. We both looked at the putt and didn't see the same thing so I shut up very quickly after that. Daniel backed himself and thank Christ he did. Nothing but net!

Apart from making the cut and earning some coin, it also means that he will probably earn his OneAsia status for next year. 1 putt may well have changed his life.

It was awesome to be a part of. Even if it was only a tiny part.

Just this week. If that becomes semi-recurring then great. We have a simiar sense of humour and get along great. What has been really surprising is that we have very much become a team so quickly and most shots/strategy are discussed beforehand.

And what were the answers to those questions you asked?
Nothing major. Just more like quirks. He wanted me to stand on the ball side when he plays each shot. Put his clubs in certain spots.

I just didn't want anything I did to fester inside him.

Shaun will drop about 4kg out there today, keep the fluids up and stay away from the pies ;)

Several times during the day The Ferret disappeared into the Boonda, only to reappear 15 to 20mins later covered in cobwebs etc with pockets full of lost balls he had scavenged! The" Emptying his balls" was the end of day stock-take on his ill-gotten gains!

Day Three – Saturday 11/12/10

Back nine first. 10.00am start.

Bit of a disappointing round today in a two over par 74. What is probably the most disappointing part is that today was Daniel's best ball striking round by some margin. His putting today was pretty ordinary. He missed a couple of makable putts early and was carrying self-doubt from there on in regards to his alignment.

1 birdie (on the 1st for the 3rd straight day) versus 3 bogeys (18th, 5th & 9th). A 3 stab on 18 after doing all the hard work was very disappointing. The bogey on 5 came when he had a crack at the green in two and lost it right into the hazard (his only real bad swing all day).

Hopefully he can put a score on the board which reflects what he should be shooting tomorrow. Don't be surprised if he goes low.

Still no jock rot!

edit - according to the PGA website, Daniel hit 144.44% of the greens in regulation. Told you he struck it well!

A couple of groups already finished, they must have sent them out extra early.

Soft greens is going make for some hot scoring, particularly if the wind doesn't up like previous days.

The greens are still playable, but just about every where else in under water.

Relentless rain.

I thought it was great watching them in those conditions (on TV, bugger standing around in that). It was also interesting to see that only the Japanese player was wearing wet weather gear. So much for the tour posers on this forum with wet weather gear .

SMS’s Australian PGA Championship Diary

Final Day – Sunday 12/12/10

7.41am start.

I reckon it started pissing down at about 5.00pm yesterday and didn't really slow down until 6.00am today. Fkn rain! I guess today gave me one final lesson in how much caddies actually do, rather than just carry a bag around.

Thankfully it was only really a drizzle while we were at warm up, so that part of the day wasn't really affected. The range was a bit of a slop, but nothing too bad. Simon Yates from the UK wore white trousers. Well, they were white until he started hitting balls.

Wearing the usual caddy attire of runners and anklets, and they were a write off about 200m down the first fairway. The ground was saturated, but bearable. At least we didn't really have to conted with surface water. Of the top of my head I think Daniel and Tatsui only took casual water relief 2 or 3 times between them. The signs of what was to come showed on the 15th when puddles started to show.

After making birdie on the first three days straight, Daniel copped one back. After missing his target slightly, his third shot was about 145 yards (yes, everything is in yards - it took me 3 days to get used to it) from light rough, but no grass behind the ball. His shot looked pure in flight but the moist air took a bit off it and his ball landed on top of the rock retaining wall. It could have went anywhere but it bounced backwards to about 5m off the front edge. No up and down and a bogey to start.

On the 4th the friggin rain started to get heavy. I pulled out the umbrella and Daniel was more concerned about keeping me dry. I suggested that it was my job to keep him dry and not the other way around. I got saturated, but having said that I was probably no wetter at the end of the round than the other 3 days. I might have smelled a bit better though.

What followed was much the same as yesterday. Hit it quite good but had alignment issues with the putter and made nothing.

We got to 18 and he tugged his drive and it oly just carried the soup, but sat in the rough in a shocking lie. He hit a LW out and then hit onto the green to about 8ft and rolled the putt in for a really good par. A final round of 73 for a +2 total.

I've had an absolute ball this week. I'll be doing it again at Coolum next year and probably in Sydney as well. I can't believe I got paid to do this. It should have been the other way around.

4 days into my caddy career and no jock rot!

The wankers took way too long to suspend play today, there were plenty of areas that became unplayable and no proper relief could be taken. Typical PGA!

Does anyone else think it is slightly ironic that Brad Hughes is practicing with persimmon, has a coach who hates everything to do with golf technology in the last 20-30 years but then uses a broom stick putter...or does he practise with a standard length then use the broom stick on course :)

Yeah Toolish it did cross my mind, maybe if he keeps out of the leading groups Lag doesn't see the sin being committed on the live streaming. Thought a Wilson 8802 might be the go.

Bit of both. It shows how thin the depth is to a degree. Having said that, Senior is probably not far behind the golfer he was 10 years ago.

Yeah I thought as much but I remember the posts in the open thread bagging the imports. If we did not have them would we have 2 distinct tournaments the leaders and the also run with a couple of guys in between. Sorry if it is harsh as the TV coverage is highlighting it as well as if you are not a big name then unless you are in the final 2 groups on the weekend you will not be seen or mentioned.

one's monday highlights were shocking. rudimentary handheld camera coverage, no onscreen graphics, no look at first play off hole at all, terrible editing of old fluff material with monday's shoot, cursory commentary...very ordinary.

with regard to allenby vs daly, apparently daly had spat the dummy coz he couldn't buy a putt.
might have something to do with the fact that;

Daly's putter appeared to be part of the issue — he forgot his new putter in his hotel room at the resort. His girlfriend failed to arrive with it from their room before Daly teed off.

I assumed that everyone knew about the putter issue. He had the wrong one in his bag, and sent the woman back to the room to get it. She didn't return in time.

I wondered why he didn't leave the putter out of his bag when he hit off and receive it mid hole ,or worst case, putt with his 3 wood on the first then get the putter.

He was supposedly backhanding putts in too.

On One's (Australia's only free to air sports channel) coverage, and at the risk of abuse because I'm defending them....

There is a chance that their crew and equipment would have needed to be packed and sent to a different location straight away for another sporting event.

I don't understand why they cop so much grief on here. We're lucky we get any FTA golf in Aus now. Channel Nine obviously think it's a waste of time and money!
