View Full Version : Golf equipment phobias

I can't:

- use irons that are any longer than standard length
- hit Callaway fairway woods off the deck
- use Mizuno wedges - they don't look right or feel right
- hit a 3 wood thats got less than 15 degree loft - it doesn't get off the ground
- use rifle 5.5 shafts. 6.0's are fine, but not half a flex softer - they feel completely different
- use grips that are any thicker than 1 paper - they feel like cricket bats.

What are some of yours?

Courty

I can't use putters with a plumbers neck. They just look wrong to me.

kpac
5th December 2010, 03:47 PM
Can't

- Play regular or heavy shafts. Need to feel the weight in the head for some bloody reason.
- play a safe right to left (draw) when needed, can control left to right, but not the other.
- apply sunscreen mid round, don't know why, just a bit special

Can't believe that anybody who uses a long putter has any morals.

LeftyHoges
5th December 2010, 04:22 PM
Definitely can not:

- use any wood that's square or closed faced.
- play anything softer than an X flex (this is not a pissing contest thing, just my swing).
- play any iron with medium to major offset. My AP2's are about as much as I can handle.
- play anything PING, except their putters.
- spin a golf ball more than 2 feet, regardless of what club I'm using...

Same here Courty.
Also can't use Tour Wrap type grips, Fingers always get caught up.
Can't shape left to right with approach shots in a game. Can do it in practice rounds though.

Definitely can not:

- play any iron with medium to major offset.
- play with a 2ball putter.
- use a golf ball other than Titlesit ProV.
- use a grip with less than 2 papers.

That doesnt count cos he told me before I hit it that i couldnt hit it.

Jarro

I can't hit open-faced drivers ..... they scare the bejesus out of me.

Also, like jack, i can't hit a fairway wood with less than 15* of loft.

Gotta say, these make me feel good, to have some things in common with a player of your ability.

- play with a 2ball putter.

Oh, I totally didn't even think of this. Spot on. Biggest pieces of crap ever invented IMO. Good call MT!

can't spin the ball with PW down, yet can generally spin it nicely with 8 or 9 iron.

Ditto on 3 woods below 15* and playing a safe draw (most often off the tee with driver as most who've played with me can testify - I can generally hit one with my fairway woods, hybrid and irons).

I have no problem with the how, but struggle with the why of 13* 3 wood. Would make sense for a Pro but for muggins it is not a % club.

I can't hit a fairway wood off the tee, driver or hybrid for me.

dean0820

- mallet putters
- ping irons
- very noisy drivers
- those soft, heavy balls
- watch or anything on my wrists

virge666
5th December 2010, 11:23 PM
13 degree fairway wood... seriously... use your driver.
Adam's clubs... cant hit them - they just feel dead. Especially the hybrids.
Love my 3iron - I wish I could hit it. Desperatly looking for a hybrid I like.
Larger irons... can't hit them as far or as well as smaller clubs.

vman
5th December 2010, 11:30 PM
I cannot play with ugly golf clubs which just about rules out anything made by Ping (except petters).

13 degree fairway wood... seriously... use your driver.

I used to carry a 12* orlimar TriMetal up until 6 months ago when I broke it. Was a piece of piss to play off the deck, long and straight. No way in hell I can play shots anywhere near that thing off the deck with a driver.

Just my $0.02.

Probably should get around to reshafting the thing at some stage. :-)

Dotty

I can't mix models of wedges.
Ditto for fairway woods.
I can't own brands with a high turnover of new models.
I can't be an OOT advertising billboard for the manufacturers, esp. headcovers, bags, iron cavities, shirts, etc. (It feels like a Nascar car.)

I also don't like hitting 460cc drivers.
(Unfortunately, at my skill level, they are a necessary evil.)

hit 3 metal off the tee
not hook hybrids

ProV1x golf balls. I hit one and it goes no where. Woods, irons - just goes no where.

LarryLong
6th December 2010, 08:47 AM
I'm afraid to try out any club that costs more than $100 just in case I like it and find myself succumbing to its slutty charms and blowing the rest of my disposable income.

My biggest phobia is that I have an irrational fear of using high spin balls because I figure high spin also means high sidespin. Not sure that this is actually true for high spin balls on full shots. I can't make any ball spin around the greens anyway.

Chris32
6th December 2010, 09:05 AM
Can't play wearing a watch
Can't hit oversize Irons - although Ping Eye 2's are the exception, but compared to some o/s clubs they aren't that big. Don't mind offset

moree golfer
6th December 2010, 09:13 AM
I must have my grips aligned correctly otherwise try as I might I can't line up the face square to the pill. It's probably a throwback to my selective obesessive compulsive behaviour.

Also can't use any other putter grip than a Pingman pistol grip, must be smooth.

LarryLong

Can't play wearing a watch

Same here, but for me it is because I almost rub my forearms together on the follow through (somehow, still don't quite know how it happens) and I usually end up with a few grazes if I leave my watch on.

I'm also superstitious about hitting a shot with a ball in my pocket. I don't know where it came from, but I've been known to drop a ball at the back of the tee box rather than leave it in my pocket while swinging. Maybe I whacked the club against a ball in my pocket once, or maybe it's just because it feels like I've mentally prepared myself for a reload. I dunno. Does anybody else have this one?

Yeah LLong can't have a ball in my pocket. To the point that if it's a teebox where u leave ur bag 100m away(cause ur gonna pass by there again) I won't take a provisional with me I see that as putting into my mind that I'll blow first shot.

I hate putters with shaft offset. If I could find one, I'd happily use an old accushnet bullseye.
Not a fan of cleveland and mizuno wedges, don't like the shape at all.

can't
- Play a round without a glove. Tried it, didnt like it, cant do it.
- Hit driver of the first tee.......... A strange one, but everytime i've tried, it's gone, never to be seen again.
- Play Pro-V1's (of any type).
- same as Vman, can't touch an ugly stick. if it looks like shite, you'll hit it like shite.

Like Ned? Fashion tragic that it is :-)

Personally for a terrible chopper I can't stand the sight of game improvement irons to the point I refuse to play with them. I see good to very good players with them and hitting them good but put those thick sole & toplines in front of me and I'd prefer to stay home and look at SMS's weird porn ;-)

You flip it..I used to have the exact same issue but with me I even ended up with a mark from the bottom of the glove rubbing on my other forearm.

For me...
Can't wear a watch or my wedding ring playing.
Can't play clubs that don't have cord grips...can use the half and half ones but that is the limit.

can't use "distance" balls,
can't play without a glove,
can't use fairway woods period.
