im checking out the best provider for some sweet adsl action, but whilst browsing ebay to get a modem i noticed the plethora of wirelss numbers on offer.

does anyone here have advice on a best provider for adsl and any dirt on wireless adsl modems?

netspace is my leading provider so far due to setup cost and monthly allowances, $49 for a 512 service and 6gb a month.

i was all set to go with Netspace for my ADSL too mac 8)

.. until i found out that the signal from my nearest exchange couldn't reach my house

Mac, that Netspace deal sounds good. I'm on Telstra, it's $89 for 512k, unlimited. A bit steep but i can't fault the service, it's always online.

As for Wireless, we're setting up users for work with a Netgear solution. Just make sure you are familiar with how to secure your wireless network so your neighbours can't cash in on all of your lovely, beautiful bandwidth... =P~

thanks fishman, something to consider but can't imagine any within 30m will be onto my network like a dog onto a ham ;)

just need to sell some more clubs, $150 or thereabouts for a Billion 4 port wireless.

netspace's setup costs seem to have gone up a bit for the bring your own modem option.

might have to check around some more.

i was originally keen on bundling everything, ie with iprimus, but there's not enough incentive across providers.

mac check out http://whirlpool.net.au should help you out with whats available.

I'm currently with Internode, 512k, $60 a month for 12gb at full speed and unlimited after that at 64k.

Absolute top notch service and reliability.

trust me unless you're going crazy there is no way you'll use 12gb 8)

thanks drunken, id been checking that site for good comparisons.

internode is on my list as well, looks good for the prices.

im down to comparing them on setup costs based on what i can get an adsl wireless on ebay for ;)

Hi Mac,

I went with Bizmail 512k which was also $49. They're a small fish, but have been fine to deal with these past couple of months. I think I got 4Gig included, and the extra Gigs were really cheap (something to watch out for on other cheap plans).

Contract was 6 months, and came with Billion 5100 4 port modem. Prices are changing so rapidly, it's worht checking whirlpool every day!

Mac

You simply cannot go past the Billion modem range. Simply the most features for the least price. Rave reviews all over the web for this mob.

http://www.pcrange.com.au/

Check out the BIPAC-5100W Adsl modem, router, hub, and wireless point for $199.

might be able to get them cheaper from local brisbane guy, www.ozcableguy.com

As for provider, I like the looks of Ozemails pricing model. Your pretty much assured of great service from any of them.

However i would be inclined to use one with a Static IP.

If anything I would avoid any providers that;
- has a download surcharge becuase of the risk
- offers total unlimited downloads becuase they will attract all the heaviest users.

Check out www.broadbandchoice.com.au and look up the search thingy. Or if you want to wait a month i will be an Agent for a new exciting ISP :-)

thanks everyone!

yup, the billion models were the ones i was after originally so it's nice to see there's even more ones out now ;) ozcableguy's website i read most of yesterday as his opinion and testing are the best id seen.

the short list is internode, netspace, pacific, bizmail...and female technologies just for the name

ones with game servers were of interest, static ip, all good. too many choices in the end it coming down to setup cost and if i can go cheaper buying my own modem.

one month till a new ISP eh blakey? any inside details? special pre-existence joining offers? :D

I actually have the original Billion modem here (modem /router only)
thats never been used. I think its worth about $80-90 new right now (paid $190 for it :( ) and i did buy it from Ozcableguy. Good service from him too.

No, owner restricted by exit clause from previous company he was part owner of. 1st July all hell breaks loose. www.bit.net.au has limited info in their forum. All i know is that there will be no unlimited downloads, the boss says that is not sustainable. But one thing he wants to do is provide something that nobody else provides. buggarred if i know what that will be (the prevvious business was best value for money, plus features).

Fishman Dan

Yep, Internode seem to be very popular, i'm with Pacific Internet, no real complaints there either. Apparently TPG have some blockbuster deal.

Just an FYI on the state of the nation - a company called Comindico are going belly-up (administrators appointed) - they were leading the 'fight' against Telstra through the ACCC to make sure that Telstra didn't squeeze the smaller ISP's out of the price war for entry-level broadband. Now that they are gone, some of the smaller ISP's might struggle to stay afloat or maintain their low-cost plans.

The TPG's, iPrimus etc (larger ISP's) have their own backbone onto the internet, and therefore shouldn't be affected.

But don't quote me on any of this ;) 8)

IF i can get ADSL, i'll more than likely go with Netspace.

They have a plan for 3Gb per month at $49.95. My dad is on this and hasn't had any dramas .. and he does heaps of downloading (music)

What plan you on with Optus AndyP :?:

Jarro, for the same price you can get onto Pacific, Dodo or others and get unlimited downloads.

What speed is that? 256/64 is good, but i'm on 512/128 - and wouldn't go less than that (personal thing). If you're a dialup junky, then 256 is a wet dream anyway ;)

200MB per month, before it drops to dialup speed for $29.95 with $0 for modem/installation. Not much, but it should be OK, I don't use the net that much at home.

It's packaged with my phone bill. So I get 50 free local calls a month (don't use all of these anyway) and they took $4 off my monthly line rental charge.

Modem arrives next Monday. 8)

it's 512/128.

Just checked and it's actually 6Gb per month. 3Gb peak/3Gb off-peak.

that's still a helluva lot of downloading  doubt i'd ever get close to that.

I used 6GB last month just from browsing & email. Another 5-6 GB on movies, mp3's etc. I'm on the Internode 512k plan, 16GB (at ANY time of day). Internode also has free downloading of content from any ABC site. Like Fishy mentioned they also have their own backbone so no worries re. commindico.

Ohh BTW I pay $59.95 a month for the 16GB

Wow! We're on a 6 Gig plan and have never come close to using it. My wife downloads all of her uni lectures and we are both on the net a heap. I also work from home via a VPN connection.

By all means go for plenty of download capacity, but maybe consider taking a lower prepaid amount with a reasonable rate per extra Gig. For eg. Bizmail is only $4 per extra Gig.

We're paying $49 per month for 512/128 with 6 Gig. Couldn't be happier. :)
