Bit of chat about next years champs at Araluen on Sunday. Thought a thread with some rough dates and ideas would be a good idea. Not trying to usurp anyones rights or responsibilities just getting this ball rolling.
Been looking at some houses in Binningup that house up to about 15 I think. Also there is a hall that is available for hire but I can't seem to find much about that... Thought maybe could be a good place to base ourselves. Makes for an easier drive ect. Bunbury with food not too far away.
Do what we did on Friday last year again and then "The Champs" on the Sat/Sun maybe playing Bunbury and Busselton or somewhere.
Probably March pre easter again?

Why not just attend the "proper" ozgolf champs near the end of the year???

You want to pay for my airfare? And the list tends to fill up before we can really commit.

Then bail out when it gets close...
AndyP

The list won't be "filled", unless each person pays the comp fee/deposit. Based on this year, there would be plenty of spots left. Unfortunately, I can't do much about the cost of airfares though.

What about the Mandurah area as a base?. Can easily pick from Halls Head, Kennedy, SH, Meadows, Cut, Binninyup, Bunbury from there. Won't waste a lot of time driving and close enough if some can only come for part of the trip.
I can look into a place about 2 mins from Meadow Springs on the beach that i stayed at last xmas. Good house, would sleep easily 12, plus has a pool and good outdoor area.

Just pretend you are from Beverley or Narrogin OMS. That should butter them up nicely. Make sure you drop an f'n'c into every sentence too!
I should be able to make a Friday appearance if we play Mandurah/North of Mandurah but I doubt I'll make the whole weekend unless am am/want to be divorced.

What if you don't like beer - I'd prefer a spirit-based premix of the Bourbon variety.
I don't want to play Meadow. The Cut is fine if we can get a good rate. Bunbury is not too far away from Mandurah.
Would also like a nice place to eat rather than fast food.

Agreed on Meadow springs, in the past 5 years conditioning has been poor everytime i played there.
The Cut is ok if you can get a deal (which they are doing frequently at the moment). I don't know why the massive dislike for this course, agreed there are some silly holes and you wouldn't want to play it everyday, but you could say the same about a lot of courses....

And like Bergsey said if u could get a good price at the cut, maybe. Compare to KB and Bunbury and it is a rip off.

The new Kal course would make for a very interesting weekend!!!
Yep indeed. Saw this course for the first time two weeks ago, didn't even know it was there.
It's a Graham Marsh spectacle, 6,800m LONG! The 2nd longest desert course in the world as a matter of fact.
$55 million has been spent on this. It looks like The Links Kennedy Bay plucked and dropped into the middle of a desert.
(except replace all the shrubs and rough with mallee and red dirt. You need to keep it on the green stuff, that 4 sure).
Has only been open about 3mths now.
AND back on the topic of 2011 WA Champs:
Mandurah is a better base for champs IMHO than Binningup, but would be happy with either.
Plenty of options in Bunbury and Mandurah for good food, fast food last time got a bit out of control but only coz we were restricted with options at Dunsborough.
The Links Kennedy Bay, Secret Harbour GC, Mandurah CC are all close by,
with Bunno CC and Binningup CC about 1 hr away from Mandurah.
Agree totally with JC on maybe giving The Cut a miss, can't afford to loose too many balls like last time.
I know Meadow Springs is expensive, but haven't played it b4 so couldn't really critique it yet/or say if we should play it or not.

Courses, I think what we did on friday last year was cool.
Make it 36 holes 18? 27 somehow. Kennedy and Meadow? The cut?
Saturday and Sunday the champs. Bunbury I think and MCC?
Bunbury on the sunday with binningup on the way home?

Friday
Kennedy Bay - 18 - Russian S'ford teams
Binningup - 9 holes - Indv. MP in teams
Saturday
Bunbury - 18 stab (pretty sure it is not available but maybe early) Adlo?
Sunday
Mandurah CC or Secret Harbour, leaning towards SH. - 18 stab.

Some guys WILL NOT be able to make the Friday stuff at all. That is a given. Those that will make it will likely have the day off. So, bearing that in mind, and increasing our chances for greater numbers for the Champs rounds by keeping it closer to Perth, here is a suggestion.
Friday: Early morning drive and then 9 holes at Binningup, early-ish LUNCH, 18 holes at Bunbury. Drive up to Mandurah for evening meal and accomodation. (OPTIONAL DAY)
Saturday: Secret Harbour or Kennedy Bay (comp permitting)
Sunday: Mandurah CC (with Secret Harbour or Kennedy Bay as backup)
That way...the 'diehards' can make the down south leg if available, but the CHAMPS are within reach of those with work/family committments on the weekend. They could join us in Mandurah Friday late arvo/evening.
Food would be more accessible, accomodation plentiful, potentially more 'family' (read:WIFE) friendly.
If the 'south' trip is preferred...I am also available for food duty, either dinner or breakfast. I also am a chef! (Will need dish pigs/kitchen hands)

i think there also needs to be a few pints of cement skulled with a few of the lads if they are unable to arrange 1 golfing w'end a year. My beautiful is certainly no push over but even she understands a bloke needs a blokes w'end on the odd occasion.

Yeah, simmsy thanks. I am thinking about Champ numbers mainly. We diehards could do the B'up / Bunbury / drive there & back thing (carpooling too, no doubt, and we could also use the TourVan to transport some people's gear).
Between SH, KB and MCC we should get two rounds and all three courses are good to use for Champs rounds. No Meadow Springs and no Cut.

I would rule out Busso...especially if we are staying in Binningup...tee times BEFORE 8.30 on Sat and having to drive down from B'up, MEH! There are better choices IMO.
The other problem is that the two preferred courses, Bunbury and MCC, are kinda tough to get for the Saturday round...so where do we play Saturday?? Capel?? It kinda leaves us with fewer options...and also gives us the potential numbers issue (which is the WHOLE POINT I would have thought).
IMO (and it's just that)...KB / MCC (or SH / MCC) is a better lineup than either Capel / Bunbury OR Capel / MCC for the Sat / Sun Champs. And Friday optional day would be a KILLER with B'up / Bunvegas.
Wait a minute...ANOTHER OPTION!!!
How about B'up/Bunbury on Friday...Sat @ Capel...Sun @ MCC on the way home. Staying in B'up house Friday night and Sat night. 'Fit cooking with mystery chef (to me anyway - is it Veeman?) and associated dish pigs. No real driving to speak of, except Capel which would be a later start anyway at around 9am.

Friday, we could all shower and change in Bunbury after the round and go out for a meal...before heading back to B'up for the nightly 'festivities'. However, I suggest that Yoss can go for a chilli dog and another spew - make it a traditional yearly event!
Saturday, drive down to Capel for the game, shower & change there as well and then go somewhere for the afternoon (either possibly back to Bunbury or some winery for late lunch/drinks). More nightly festivities (possibly another chilli dog for Yoss?).
Sunday, leave house early for MCC and then a few drinks after the game during presentations, before calling it quits and heading home!

If we plan on playing KB/SH on Saturday and MCC on Sunday, isn't staying in B'up a LOT more extra driving...?
Down on Fri morning (for some), then into Bunbury for Fri arvo game and back, then up to KB/SH Sat and back down again, and then up to MCC Sunday and then home...sounds like a LOT of back & forward moving around. IF we were playing Capel/Bunbury/Busso as the courses, then fine. But why stay SO far south when the Champs games will likely be further north, and the fewer guys going south on Friday can knock off B'up & Bunbury in one day...?
If we stay in Mandurah (or even somewhere like Preston Beach, Halls Head etc) then Sat arvo will be OK to look at a 9 at B'up for those who want to go.
TourFit
17th November 2010, 01:27 PM
Had a look at Preston Beach...found a 'suitable' house that is a possibility...
It's closer to Mandurah (The Cut) than it is to Binningup, but still close enough for a quick 9 on Sat arvo. Easy to get to SH/KB/MCC from there too...kind of compromising between those who want to stay in B'up, and those that would rather stay closer (and MAY NOT COME OTHERWISE!!!). Remember, only SOME guys will be going to Binningup/Bunbury on the Friday if that is how the course selection goes.
here's the link... http://http://www.takeabreak.com.au/PrestonBeach/margaretriver/Preston-Beach-4-bedroom-House.htm (http://http://www.takeabreak.com.au/PrestonBeach/margaretriver/Preston-Beach-4-bedroom-House.htm)
At the end of the day, it's about the numbers to the event...the Preston Beach place is no different to B'up in that BBQ will likely be utilised and we may have to do a bit of cooking for ourselves (which COULD be the entertainment right there!).

If we are play the Saturday and Sunday in Mandurah, theoretically, we ma get around 24 players for a championship. Those that can't stay overnight are more likely to show up for the day in Mandurah. If the Sunday is a Mandurah course - most are likely to stay a bit longer for presentations and afters. We play till 1pm or so and we'd all be back home by 3 pm or so instead of 5 or 6 pm on the Sunday. For the Championship, it would be great to get a merit bar with 20 + turning up.
Some of us may not be able to play all of Friday. How many are going to show on Friday and stay the night? We sound like we are basing 2 nights accommodation for the golf on Friday. I like Binningup but I doubt if I would play 2 days running if there are other options.
I would like to play 18 and a 9 on Saturday - it is about the golf after all.
Latish tee on Saturday morning - about 9am (either KB or SH depending on availability).
Perhaps play Pinjarra on Saturday afternoon for 9 and stay in Pinjarra. The Ravenswood serves a reasonable meal (granted I haven't been there in 10 years).

I tend to agree Yoss...if the course list is as suggested then it doesn't seem to make as much sense to stay in Binningup though...with an early start at KB/SH on Saturday.
Check out here as an alternative...Fairbridge Farm, Pinjarra. VERY COST EFFECTIVE.

Wouldnt it be funny on the blind holes in a 4-man ambrose?
Four ppl could hit off in a group and you might not find the best ball. Sometimes the best ball might end up being the only one that's found, or the only one that stays on the fairway, lol.
Still, would do it for a team event and the hit/miss would make it anyones game.

The Cut would suit a team event. Agreed with green fees being too high.
Settle down OMS.

I hate it it general, but a team event would make it fun. I still hate 17 more than I hate hearing about TourFits new adidas purchases.
PLayed Yokine yesty and KB Wednesday and maybe Thurs with some boys from Merryl-Lynch. No stress with the bad weather today OMS- slept till midday. Your knees must be swollen with this bad weather.

They do deals now and then, maybe an email to them saying we've got potentially x amount of groups for them on a friday. Can you work something out.
If they can't do something reasonable then Rocko maybe on Bunbury.

hey gents, i read ur post with amusement but interest. I am a member of The Cut and i hear ur frustrations. For people that haven't played it much it is a boody tough track. Like many links courses, once you know how to play it and where tha ball rolls it isn't difficult at all but you must play links style golf. bombing long high balls is parkland golf, doesn't work. likewise, blind holes are standard links style, go to St Andrews and all through that area a they offer caddies as u get lost on the tee wondering what the hell to do.
There are a few floors but the designer was hamstrung by the greenies in design and i know the new owners r keen to look into it. likewise, if u last played under the old owners they had no fertilizer and balls rolled unfairly into the rough eg hole 18- u could hit a good tee shot you could loose you ball, now with the longer grass, u have to hit a sh#t shot to go bush.
hole 17 cops it and yes, the original design was not how it is as the greenies wanted to protect a few trees. however it is the easiest hole on the course, rated 18 if you play it to the design. At the end of the day if it blows, like KB or any links course, forget playing to ur handicap.
If u r looking 4 a deal, give Grant a call, he is the guy that can help, u wont get it over the counter.
I have played the course hundereds of times and my adrenalin still pumps and heart races over many shots as much as it did the first time i played it. those challenges excit me unlike boring pitch and putt tracks but everyone likes different things from their golf. i have played most courses in perth and some tracks i don't even remember a hole- for me golf is about experiences- like joondy, i don't love the course but a great experience.
keep up the banter

Welcome the cut! It is not a bad course just overrated. 17 is horrible. Agree that Wilcher was somewhat hamstrung.
Okay at this stage gents we are book for the 26th of March @10:40 AM at KB for four groups.
27th of March @ 9:00 at MCC.
The friday is proving more problematic as stated the cut wasn't really prepared to deal, I can't remember what they quoted me but it was a bit much. And we only have two groups for the friday so less bargaining power. So I was thinking maybe Bunbury/ Binny.
Where are we staying??

You blokes are wankers! And I don't mean WAnkers!
The Cut, welcome to the forum. A lot of guys here don't like the course because they have chopped it around there so many times. My only complaints are the holes around the estate are a little ugly because of all the houses and the dirty big apartment building on 2.
Many people will always compare your course to KB which is understandable but it's really like comparing every course to Royal Melbourne. Stupid comparisons.
Once again, welcome aboard. Enjoy your stay. Mind the WAnkers.

I'm the first to say The Cut is not perfect and i can slag it off if i chose, in fact no course is and until I shoot a 65 on a course, any couse I play is not perfect... that's how coorses usually rate isn't it?
I like Kennedy as a desgin, great, but not an overly enjoyable day out- golf experience is so so. Having played there only a few times I get penalised by great shots that roll down wind, hard fairways into pot bunkers that are so penal. I know that is links and I like to play those sort of courses and if I play it a lot i would enjoy it more, but not having the opportuntiy to play it that much, at the moment it doesn't float my boat as much as it probably should but hopefully that will change.
I can't see a comaprison that we compare course to KB, like othr to to RM. The course here on the west can't even be put in the same sentence as some of those sandbelt courses. the best par 3 in WA would not rate in he top 50 over there.
I would certainly use Lake Karrinyup in the sentence with daylight 2nd in the west.
I would change this post over but I'm not that advanced... sorry

You see for me I didn't enjoy the cut because i hit good shots that got shunted into the shit, lost, not recoverable, because of whacky contouring and oddly placed bunkers.
If you hit a shot at a pot at KB then I would suggest it is not a great shot. The roll out is a little bit of a problem but that as you say is links golf.
