Don't hold it on Cairns. Mike would come ;)

The weekend was chosen as they are supposed to be doing green renos this weekend. Shavey was going to wait until he has that information before sorting dates and seeing if he can wrangle us the same deal.

we're still at spitballing stage guys. Reading through everyone's highs and lows from this years champs, there's was little talk about the course. It was all about the after hours activities. City GC is a good venue in that respect and drinks are cheaper than the Crowne Plaza prices, no doubt. It's just an idea.

daves - you can always play Brooky on the friday on your way up Toowoomba. It's just over an hour up the hill from there. It took that long to get from Horton to Pelican.

Im working on an option for northern nsw.
Murbah...Ocean Shores....Mullumbimby...Byron and maybe even Ballina in the mix.
Just an option of course but I think its worth a discussion.

I think smaller country courses would put together great deals to make it happen...and that doesn't mean $22 for a shit club sandwich. (sorry eagsy I didn't rate it much)

Rich, I like the sound of that, I would have no problem heading to one of the smaller country tracks.

dc68
13th October 2010, 12:22 PM
My idea is that we'd have a group large enough to book out a whole motel complex which takes the pressure off being too rowdy. Of course it would be a damn site less shiny than Pelican and Crown but I keep getting told its all about the people and not the course.
For this to happen though a bus would have to be in the mix but I think that would improve the whole event piling clubs into a bus and trekking off for a short run to the next venue. The option would of course be there for guys to drive themselves.
Mullum is a fairly average course but has a great Thai restaurant in the clubhouse and would do a great meal..potential Fri night thing.

I'll get more info and post soon.

And for those not aware of the courses there I would certainlyput Murwillumbah and Ocean Shores ahead of Horton Park on a pecking order..Ballina is about the same...and Mullum is pretty basic.

Don't even think it!!!!!

Although I like the idea.

The problem with the Toowoomba idea is the Saturday game. Not that I've been to either in a while, but I doubt you'd get 44 to 60 of us on on a Saturday arvo at either course! The best chance we'd have is at City if G69 can do some shmoozing and they have plenty of notice. May get 60 on Middle Ridge on a Sunday though! They've let me take social groups out in the middle of the Sunday comp, and even have social and comp players mixed. And when I've played a Sunday it hasn't seemed that busy.

Me, I like Club Pelican while we can get that deal. But I don't mind the idea of maybe finding another 'affordable' venue for Saturday night. Heck, I can stick the seats in my van and ferry back and forth if not too far away.

Hotel was busy after this period and I'd prefer to wait at least 6 weeks after reno to combat any setbacks with weather.

Fair point, i was just thinking though if it gets pushed back much earlier then it isn't really and end of year event is it. :-)
Maybe that could eventually Pass to Dions BBQ

Can we get 60 on either on saturday?

I'd be thinking that most clubs would bend over backwards to work out a way to welcome that many players particularily if they are going to be throwing money over the bar, and if we get back to late November, the days are longer. No problemo.

Im working on an option for northern nsw.
Murbah...Ocean Shores....Mullumbimby...Byron and maybe even Ballina in the mix.
All of the above, i was thinking Byron, Ocean shores myself. didnt we discuss this last year.
Also Yamba is well worth considering and should have good accomadation and eating out options.

Me, I like Club Pelican while we can get that deal. But I don't mind the idea of maybe finding another 'affordable' venue for Saturday night. Heck, I can stick the seats in my van and ferry back and forth if not too far away. The trouble with travel somewhere else for the nighttime fun, is that people lose interest. Heck last year Kpac couldnt even come down two levels in the lift. The $8 beers dont sound too thrilling especially after paying around $500 for the room.

Maryborough/Hervey Bay might also be an option for you. I would be very surprised if Maryborough couldn't get you all on on a Saturday afternoon

I'd be interested in anything like that. Plenty of groups organise long distance bus trips, cant think of any good reason what prevents us from doing the same. Just don't let Golfer69 drive otherwise it would be stopping every 5 mins.

Tenterfield sounds great, but maybe doesnt have the right vive to it for the champs. Jimboomba would be a gas off the blacks, but maybe not the right scene either. All these places should be considered for another Ozgolf event perhaps.

No one was paying $500 per room. In face the room rate was exceptionally good, which makes the $8 beer a bit more bearable. I did naughty BYO anyway. I am liking the Ocean Shores and Toowoomba options, but would be happy to stay at Pelican too. Maybe we need to introduce a Rota?

Neither of the 'woomba clubs would be struggling for players on a Saturday.

that wouldnt matter, some clubs would sell their souls to the detriment of members - Emerald lakes did. Not saying city would but give them a business proposal and only a few would refuse point blank. The exception here is that City probably dont need the money. But As golfer69 said, he has virtually got the Ok from City already.

The reason we could get on City on the Saturday is G69's connections. Otherwise I'd say it would be a no go too. Certainly a cheap option - cheap golf, cheap piss, cheap accom. And in reality it's probably only a 45min longer drive for those flying in.

Of course I may need to find myself a hc somewhere!!!!

With regards to the quality of the courses - city is tough enough but the fibro houses around the course may not look marvelous in the background. Though the clubhouse is a killer - and would be great for a feed afterwards. Middle ridge is as attractive a course as many around and I don't think anyone would be 'disappointed' as such with the courses. There haven't been many comments with regards to the course or the golf last weekend. And it's not really that far a walk to town and other pubs if desperate. Tee the date up right and maybe the 4 kinsman will be performing at City on the Saturday night.........

PeteyD

Is it cheaper than Pelican (Golf and Accom wise). 155 per room with buffet breaky is stupid cheap. $55 a round with cart is also (although you can walk at City and Ridge, but that would involve walking at the champs, and how to bring the rumbos).

by next year The Rdige will have on course villa's as well.

The club house reno's are done and I think it matches most is se qld now.

Maclean is ok, not as good as Yamba. I played both last week and they would be ideal champs venues, although the drive from Yamba to Maclean would be 20+ minutes.

It's 3.5 hours from Graceville at an absolute maximum, so for those on the southside its 3 hours or a bit less.

Sounds good Daves. All it really takes is for someone to make the phone call, do the booking and advertise that its on. Thats what has happened every other year, because in fact, nobody is the official anything here at Ozgolf, its just a case of someone saying "I'll do it and here it is". I'd imagine Maclean would be no worries on a Saturday, Yamba a different story.

The back 9 at Maclean is above average and the front 9 is a bit 'ho hum'. More than adequate for the champs though. Some really interesting greens for a little country track hidden away, and in excellent condition.

Shavey,

We do a trip with 30-45 each year to Bonville, have a BBQ dinner and Calcutta upstairs on the first night, there is a bar, pool table, Tv and plenty of chairs up there, think there might be some pokies (around the corner) for those who have been lobotomised. The members do the presentations up there. Plenty of room for us, with 60 might get a bit tight but should work OK. Bus is available to do a run into Sawtell or Coffs as well. Personally while we get a great deal at a great course we should grab it. If the weather is fine next year then on the Friday we could congregate in the outdoor area beside the restaurant! Mooning from dc would go down well!!! Smaller numbers on the friday night so the room or two idea could work well then, especially if they are next to eachother. Free bus to the rsl should be a winner for Saturday night. The week before just give them a heads up that we'll have 45 (uhmmmm, mean 60) for dinner and will need the bus to pick us up. 4. What dates during 2011 are we looking at?

Our Courtesy Buses run every hour on the hour from 9am until quite late.
Patrons wishing to use the service are requested to book a seat on the
bus for collection from their home / holiday address. As the service
runs all day and until the Club has closed, patrons wishing to use the
service to get home just make their way out to the front of the Club
15mins (approx) before the hour they wish to go home.

Should you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact
me on the details listed below.

Many Thanks,

Reception
Caloundra RSL Services Club Inc.

Sounds like we might be able to get some help but nothing concrete.

You've got to love Clubs that are accommodating of large groups.

Be nice if we had such a thing in WA. The Club scene is sadly missed over here!

I'd say a couple of weeks out we'd ring them, make a booking for dinner (numbers should be close to sorted by then) and also a pickup time for the bus and numbers. Carrying 20 it'd be 2 or 3 runs but I'm sure instead of every hour they'd just do the pickups straight in a row. Would work fine because we'd never get all our group down and ready at the same time. Heck, I could chuck the seats in my van and if someone's not drinking they could shuttle about 10 of us over - that'd save them one trip.

Sounds like a lot of mucking around for the sake of taking the tightarse route on alcohol.

There is no such thing as 'mucking around' in beer economics!

Personally I like not going anywhere. However whatever the mob likes is good with me.

why don't we ask the actual golf club, as opposed to the hotel for use of their facilities for drinking/eating at night?

I prefer the RSL. They will have big Samoan security blokes there that can keep a handle on nipple gripping !

I'd have thought you'd be more worried about the groping of the slightly salted nuts, though maybe you didn't mind that? Pretty sure I still have the vid!! ;)

I would think it would cost more for room hire as they close pretty early anyway. Drinks/food would be similar price to Crowne, although I could actually use my account there (and get 10% off). And the bar staff are hot.

I vote staying at the golf club.

when you use the words "60 golfers hanging around for drinks" the eyes would light up for the extra revenue.

I've been to a couple of weddings there, and also had a reasonable session on the piss there one saturday night until about 8:30 pm.

Had there been another 50 people, I'm sure they would have kept serving beyond 8:30 that night.

I wouldn't have thought we need to hire a room, just hang around the bar.

We could always just stay there until we get kicked out and just get down to the Pelican Waters Tavern afterwards.

We don't tend to hang around the golf club because we go back or check in to the rooms and have a shower, etc.

There were about 40ppl this year Ben. Costs $55 a round. Don't have to do anything to play, just commit to playing when the time comes.

I would love to go back to pelican when it's not raining lol. In saying that the couple of champs weekends I have been on I don't really think the course matters as much as having the ability to all socialize on that Saturday night. As good as the rsl might be I think it would end up the same as a few rooms. One thing to consider which I have done at other weekends away when there is multiple rooms is a roaming dinner type thing??
