Just received this txt from a mate who knows somebody very close to the source...

Thought this was worthy of it's own thread, especially if it's true...

6 players and 1 manager will get a life ban on Monday for match fixing in NRL. 3 from Cowboys, 2 Bulldogs and a Storm player. The manager is George or Sam Ayoub(not sure) , Cowboys players are Mason, Thurston, Payne. The Bulldogs players are Tandy and Saleh. The Storm player is Adam Blair.

And if anybody can get some odds, please let me know ;)

Interesting...

Not that Mason will care now he's in the UK.
Would be devastating for NQ if its true..

Pretty big if it is the case?
I have always thought Thurston gives it everything on the field and if he was somehow involved in fixing he disguises it pretty well!

Sam Ayoub is a grub and it wouldn't surprise me. Mason is stupid but I doubt he's THAT stupid. I doubt Thurston would stoop so low. As for the rest I don't know.

I got exactly the same text message...makes you wonder about how real it might actually be?

I too wonder whether Thurston would be match fixing - he seems to be a very strong competitor and doesn't make the mistakes that lose the game.

There was also an ex NRL player mentioned, received a text last week (And I posted in the NRL Thread that the betting Scam would raise its head after the GF).

John Elias
Sam Ayoub
Halem Saleh (Or whatever his name is)
Ryan Tandy
Aaron Payne
Jonathan Thurston
Adam Blair

All heresy but the NSW Cops are in Townsville this week or next to interview players as part of the criminal investigation.

All heresy but there is CCTV of NRL players at TAB's etc laying bets and collecting winnings.

If Mason is banned from the NRL it would carry over to the Super League...

Those guys aren't in half as much trouble as Damien Oliver if the rumours about him are to be believed.

Those text messages have been flying around for at least 2 weeks, if not longer.

Says a lot for Perth media if they are only reporting it last night, when Triple M of all people were reporting it over 2 weeks ago !

How could 1 or even 3 players fix a match?

Supposedly it is more about points fixing then actually throwing the match, if that makes sense.

Things like field goals, when to take penatly kicks etc.

To do it successfully you would need the captain of the team to be very heavily involved.

Although lets face it, it's not as if it would be all that difficult to organise the Cowboys to lose games...

Yep, and the police investigation continues.

Whilst some folk may believe the NRL has the power to hand out life bans using sms rumours as evidence, it would be a tad unlikely.

The incident in quesrtion looks pretty suss, don't you think? I'm not saying that they're guilty, just that it looks very dodgy.

Given we don't really know how much was bet, or whether one person placed a huge bet which prompted a heap of punters to follow suit (which I am lead to believe happens) it could be ALL media hype.

Yes, where is Danny's latest scoop anyway ?

He is too busy doing the press rounds for Mundine and SBW to cover this story at the moment... Don't fret though I am sure he will "break" it on channel 9 a couple of weeks after the police investigation is released.

An 'away game' for the NSW detectives? Somehow, I don't think they'll be going to bed at 7.30 each night after saying the Lord's prayer. http://www.steeleraddicts.com/forum/images/smilies/drunk.gif

I'd never say that, its my 2nd favourite subject. I probably sarcastedly quoted other paranoid ozgolfers who sprout that, but think that porn is ok.

The only denial was the fact of the announcement being made on Monday. it was never going to happen Monday as it is a public holiday. I think something will come out later. The comment from Ray Muhrilly in the story was not the strictest denial

Racing NSW chief steward Ray Murrihy, who has tabled a report to the NRL, said he was also aware of the electronic gossip surrounding the probe.
"I've seen the texts but until the police make some announcement I'm not sure where these rumours can take you."
Asked if the names in the texts and email were accurate, Murrihy said: "I'm not prepared to say who is or isn't involved."

That's because it is the only thing they can deny. Mentioning anything else would be prejudicial to any investigation being undertaken by the police.
