Anyway, the lady at WAGC thinks I'm a member there because of how often I play there.

Probably gonna have to sit this one out.

I'll be in Kalgoorlie for work testing some big stacks!

Then come back to a course covered in sand, bugger.

Guess coring has to be done at some point.

Veefore

I called in at the club last night and Shane (played with us at mandurah on sunday) came through the turn. He said the greens are ridiculous. They are stupid fast but they aren't running true. They are in that state where the last 2ft or so of roll wobbles left and right and uphill or down.
A couple of other people came off the course saying that if they don't get some water on them fast they won't be alive for the open anyway.

Does anybody know why greens go like this? BD?
Is it because they aren't rolling them?

TourFit
7th October 2010, 05:06 PM
Marking up around the hole...so as the putts slow, the 'damage' is causing the bouncing ??

Not really sure why they would be so fast without also being true. 'Spike' marks or wear damage is all I can think of

simmsy
7th October 2010, 05:44 PM
the course is about 6 weeks overdue for serious maintenance because there is too many comps on the fixture book - they should be coring them straight after club champs/pennants - have a month off then play the other main comps.

also maybe due to the fact we've had no winter at all this year.

Johnny Canuck
7th October 2010, 09:22 PM
It's weird, Fit.

They are not smooth. There are little holes and indentations all over the place. Mark your ball, replace it, and it rolls into a little hole. It's like they've been cored, but they haven't.

Veefore
7th October 2010, 10:35 PM
I asked around today and most think it is just the winter grass that is causing the problem. It will be interesting to see what happens when they come back from coring and the winter grass dies off.

It does sound like the winter grass is declining. They should come back pretty good from coring.

When we do our chemical programme to keep Poa in check you see the Poa almost start to melt out, leaving small areas where the Poa was. Over time the bent covers these deporessions.

Johnny Canuck

Would love to, but back at work and not playing due to a wedding.

Greens rolled a little strange today. I hit one 5 foot putt 3 times. The first time it broke right, the second it went straight and the third was moving left when it dropped.

They are stupid hard at the moment. I was amazed when a cut PW only rolled out about 3 feet today, to a green that is below the tees.

Played this morning and the Poa wasn't too bad. The ball actually rolled truly and at a good speed. Apparently it is in the afternoons when it starts to cause inconsistent roll.

Heaven help anyone who relies on a spin-and-check style short game though. The greens are really back to their 80's-90's hardness.

Like Mandurah last week V?

Definitely firmer.
I think maybe a little quicker but harty's greens don't have as much slope to them so it's hard to compare.

Both JC and I managed to spin approach shots back today but only by landing them at the back of the green and using the fringe grass for traction.

If it is poa vee, $5 says they won't beat it without ripping up greens.

I'm not taking that bet. It comes in on peoples shoes as well as other ways so they will never completely eradicate it. According to Rob (Pro) the plan is simply consistently spraying it over four years. I think that their hope is simply to reduce it enough that it doesn't become a problem at this time every year. In the mornings, after it is freshly mowed it is no problem. It doesn't affect the roll of the ball at all. But it grows a lot faster than the bent and by late afternoon it definitely seems to affect some putts.

Hopefully if it's not too much trouble BD can give us his take on it. I'm sure there are a few others who would be as interested as I am becoming.

adlo
11th October 2010, 12:32 AM
Surely there are very few poa free greens in Perth these days.

I think they can be managed without it having too much of an adverse effect on the quality of the course.

However, there is one small problem. Hartfield is a goat track, so they will more than likely just let the poa take over.

MegaWatty
11th October 2010, 12:37 AM
That link I posted explains a bit about spraying it and when to do it. If it's flowering, it's spreading seeds and that's bad.

adlo
11th October 2010, 12:43 AM
Don't spread seeds. Spreading seeds is bad, m'kay.

MegaWatty

Golfnut
11th October 2010, 12:51 AM
One years seed = 7 years weed......so good luck with it......it can be sprayed out but if the problem's bad, it may take anywhere up to 7-8 yrs to really get on top of.

Problem with it is it can seed even with very very minimal leaf length and continuous low mowing is not enough to mechanically collect all seed forming.......in other words it's a prick of a grass to have in any lawn.

Veefore

Amazing what a difference water on the greens makes.
I asked at the committee meeting tonight (a real committee meeting this time ;)) why the greens had been so hard and it was simply because they hadn't been receiving much water lately. What was being put on was pretty much just rolling off the sides because of the soil compacting. With some extra watering and the rain on the weekend they have apparently softened up quite a bit. This whole situation wouldn't have happened if the greens had been cored earlier but they couldn't because of the date of the Hartfield Open.
Apparently the WAGA has given the green light for the date to possibly be moved forward next year which will allow coring earlier and reduce this problem in future.

It might be time to find another interest.

Typically of this time of year we had the roaring easterly until about 10am. Teeing off on the 1st was fun. Most people weren't getting near the fairway bunkers. I saw a lot of the better players going over the corner on 10 with the wind assist.

Thankfully we only get that in October-November each year.

Don't feel bad Hocko. That is probably the hardest that the "easy goat track" can play. Putting on those greens was excellent but chip's and pitches just weren't stopping. It made for some very long putts. Pete, who is leading the nett after 18 gave himself a putting lesson during the week after some really bad putting lately and 1 putted the first 4 greens. Then on the 5th he knocked his 30ft first putt 15ft past and made the comebacker. It was awesome to watch.

After listening to all the banter about WA golf course greens I have started to appreciate my home greens as I have spent some time getting to know them.
All greens seem to be different and I just can't get my head around either hitting putts harder or softer.

I left early today but the weather was perfect for golf. The wind that the morning players faced yesterday was absent today.

I think that even though there was a 68 & a 70 this weekend may have been the hardest the course has ever been set up. A number of people came to tell me about overhearing visiting paxton players complaining about the course and especially the hardness of the greens.

Even some of the best Hartfield players struggled to break 90 so it must have been a nightmare for some of our visitors.

Hopefully with the bringing forward of the date next year there shouldn't be a repeat of the rock hard greens.

Unfortunately the damage might have already been done. A lot of players would have been embarrassed by their scores today and may decide not to come back again next year.

A 5 handicapper shot 102 today. WOW!

The golf was bad...the company was good.
I am quite happy to stick my hand up and say i played very very ordinairy today.
The funny thing is I only hit one bad iron shot all day and managed to hit 11 greens.
Four three putts and four four putts, and my tee shot on 1 was the start of a bad day as V4 can tell you.

We'll get you out for a round when the greens calm down.

11 greens and 102 is insane.

I think there is a bit of a delay. They're waiting on the equipment used in the Chilean Mining Rescue to arrive.

And next weeks winning scores will be 45-46 points with about 40 players at 36 or better.

I don't know what it was yesterday but I was doing the starting for the Paxton players on the 1st and I reckon I saw maybe 8 hit the fairway.
In Shaun Malone's group one sliced it almost onto the 7th (Shaun), one hit a worm-burner into the grass-tree down the right and the other hooked one almost over the chipping green. I reckon I saw 4 other players completely chunk their tee shots.

While the greens were tough there was some rancid play by state-rep level players just getting to them.

The funny thing was that none of the old boys you would expect to be complaining about the greens were. When I asked their attitude was that it was the "open" and it was supposed to be tough and that it was the same for everyone.

There is a fine line between tough and stupid.

The US Open seems to flirt with it every year.

The greens cored yet?

They started coring the tenth when we were putting out on the eighteenth, i think they managed to get 7 or 8 greens done before dark yesterday.
Our group made a comment that the bloke on the coring machine should have been a hole in front of us.....that may have given us a better chance, or at least given us an excuse for poor golf.

That was 2 days of hurt. Tee to 100 metres out I was OK but at some stage I had to hit the granite I mean green then the wheels, axles, diff and gearbox all fell off. Even an over night putter and grip change made little difference. Hartfield 2 Me 0.

Shit eh? Do they all get tabled at the match committee meetings?

Shit eh? Do they all get tabled at the match committee meetings?

Not all. They go to the relevant committee (e.g. greens) but if it does involve the match committee to some extent they usually do.

Whenever they grow the rough longer we usually get a couple from the ladies who sometimes can't reach the fairway and don't have the strength to hit out of it.

I expect we will get 2 or 3 this time.
