View Full Version : Golf Course Open Day Thread

Just thought I would remind everyone that there is a thread with plenty of open comps around the SE Qld area listed here:
http://www.ozgolf.net/forums/showthread.php?t=473

I have made a couple of updates, but I'm sure there are a few that may be outdated.
If you have any to add or update let me know.

If any of the other areas, eg Sydney Area, want to compile a list, we can make a sticky for that too.

What sort of times on the timesheet would normally be allocated to the comp, Cobra?

Can you start one and I will add as many as I know of. Or can I just start a sticky?

:-k
Do you want something that is like the SE Qld thread, where it is organised into days of the week? (I find this handy)
Do you want it locked without any other posts from other members?

You won't be able to create a sticky, and you won't be able to lock it from other posts. However, you can start a normal thread, and I can turn it into a sticky and lock it later on.

Sounds good Andy, I will do it when I get up tomorrow or Friday, am off to night shift. Only thing I noticed with the SE QLD one was the day that was being refered to was in small print in the topic heading and was hard to find until i realised the layout.

Thanks. I was thinking of changing that myself.

I am also thinking of just listing these open days on a seperate webpage like the links page instead of a forum sticky. But I'll take it one step at a time. ;)

you updated that Blue Marker challenge is now on Wednesdays at Emerald Lakes?
Wednesdays is "Sporters" comp and they like the course set up easy.

played Gailes today. again $10 big ones only. so maybe change the thread for Gailes Wed & Sun, to just read $10. it can be changed later if they ever do decide to charge more.

this is excellent value for money. good course condition. i don't understand why they don't have a full comp every Sunday.

I wanted to post some of this year's upcoming open comps, after noting them for myself the other day, after the Headland Easter weekend. I'm certainly not going to play in them all, but it's nice to know what's coming up and being able to plan for a round. Especially if you are a trophy event slut like A-Lo. :p

Apr 21 - Ashgrove Cup - Ashgrove GC
Jun 7/8 (Sun/Mon) - Caloundra Amateur Champs - Caloundra GC (from memory there were handicap restrictions)
Jun 17 - Nudgee Plate - Nudgee GC
Jun 23/24 - Wide Bay Open & Closed Championship - Hervey Bay
Jul 22 - Horton Park Open - Horton Park GC
Jul 29 - Frank Foley Trophy - Gailes GC
Aug 4/5 - Twin Towns Open - Coolangatta Tweed Heads GC
Aug 19 - Gold Coast Open - Southport GC
Sept 7/8 - Town of Nambour Open - Nambour GC
Sept 29/30 - City of Ipswich Open - Ipswich GC
Oct 14 - SC & SBDGA Open & Closed Championship - Caboolture GC
Oct 27-28 - Noosa Lakes District Open - Tewantin Noosa GC
Nov 17-18 - OZgolf Championships - Kooralbyn Valley
Nov ? - Qld B & C Grade Champs - Noosa Springs

I don't know for sure that they are all open, but several of them definitely are. I'm sure there's more big open events around too.

16th April 2007, 01:04 PM
I like the idea of Hervey Bay - I think we owe it to the locals to head up that way once a decade or so.

AndyP
16th April 2007, 01:06 PM
Blakey, do you know what is meant by "Open & Closed Championship"?

markTHEblake
16th April 2007, 01:17 PM
It means that there are two major events:
Open : best Gross score, anyone from anywhere can enter
Closed: best gross score from members of clubs within that district

Its just a way of ensuring that the District Champion is a local, but to encourage other golfers to attend, no doubt it is also an AB event.

Most likely minor events, grades, nets, runner ups etc are all Open. I woudl say there is only two closed events, Overall Gross and Nett.

Grunt
16th April 2007, 04:51 PM
You guys are lucky to get to play in these events. Down here they are in the majority to only open to A graders. In that they have restrictions like home club up to 12 handicap but visitors only up to 4.

Rusty
16th April 2007, 04:58 PM
only to 4! - guess they don't like to encourage visitors.

PeteyD
16th April 2007, 04:59 PM
I think you'll find some of these are limited too Grunt.

Grunt
16th April 2007, 05:00 PM
they do but only up to 4, most events are called Vardon Events and they are for up and coming amateurs to get closer to turning pro.

AndyP
16th April 2007, 05:31 PM
NSW:
Mid-am Champs (https://www.securedvirtualnet.com/nswgolf/Events/EventHome.aspx?OrgID=1&EventID=270&EventNbr=1) (Restricted)
Possible others (http://www.nswga.com.au/html/s02_article/article_view.asp?id=1819&nav_cat_id=199&nav_top_id=55&dsb=1444)
Don't any of the Vardon events run a comp for us hackers, or is the full field for the Vardon.

A lot of the one's we play are district comps and not as high as those under the QDGA. I can't find a Sydney District GA website, only NSWGA.

Grunt
16th April 2007, 05:38 PM
No Sydney district Association AP. Guess that is another reason that we, if could get the fields, get more than 2 maybe 3 groups in a Sydney open day. Saturdays in Sydney are very hard to find open days that are truely open days.

markTHEblake
16th April 2007, 05:44 PM
There is more than 100 golfers on the Gold Coast that play off a handicap of 4 or less, therefore in Sydney I guess it would have to be more than 1000.

Vardon events naturally must limit the field, as they do with any event.

There would be plenty of Open Amateur events for Sydney golfers to play in, but you wont find them in the Vardon schedule. Keep an eye on your club noticeboard, or if there is a particular golf course you like, give them a ring and find out when is their Open championship, Almost every golf club has one.

Petey, that is only for the AB part of the event. Usually they run a comp for us hackers concurrently, like they did at Nudgee, and have previously for the Frank Foley at Gailes.

Southport dont seem to be running the A- grade championship event anymore (5hcap and up). Thats Golfer99's baby.

I would say that the Gold Coast open will have a hcap ballot at around 5-6 handicap, events down here are always full.

I have emailed the District to ask them about the A grade hackers champs at southport

Oxley on Sunday was $19 now $20. What?!

Oxley's in good nick - a bit of greenery and a bit of grass - what more could a golfer want?? smoother greens, a little slower maybe (easier for my wandering putting) and sand, sand, give me lots of sand in bunkers, instead of bare, hard lies. although a tight lie for me's always easier than a sand, bladdy sand.

so my pick of Sunday value for money and course condition is still Gailes and Nudgee. Gailes - so green, always challenging, especially those greens & what!, just where do they get all that water from :smt102 . and Nudgee, good old Nudgee, haven't played it for a while, but it's a nice mix of a challenge and readable, rolling greens.

Here's some info I've just received about some trial Coolangatta Tweed Open Days:

CTHGC has listed the first Monday, Wednesday and Friday of January and February 2008 as “Open” Competition days. All AGU & WGA Golfers are invited to play in the relevant competition for only $9.00pp. Time sheets open 7 days prior to the day of play as per normal. Please ring the Pro Shop on 07 55 245 545 to book your tee time.

Monday, Friday - mixed and Wednesday - men on the competition course of the day.

I've confirmed that the $9 is inclusive of the green fee. How good is that? Sounds like a great deal for you Gold Coast guys.

shock, horror! there i was handing over the moula for the Gailes Sunday comp, only to be told that it's gone up! what! not just 10 or 20%, but 50%. that's right, the cost of a bit of Sunday masochism has gone up a whole 50%. no wonder the RBA has to exercise monetary policy to tame that dreaded inflation animal. yep, it's not really rising petrol, food or wages that's causing the problem - it's the rising cost of golf! (i'm sure it's factored into the inflation animal somewhere, gotta be).

but still now that i've slept on it and calmed down, $15 for that course on a Sunday is still bloody good value (no change that i know of for the other days $).

hey nice addition of the Monday Trainee Pro-Ams btw.

What if your wage is on a national award thei it is not better than someone not in Sydney. Most of the time only the top end of town get to negotiate their wage according to where they live.

Why does everything come down to how much someone earns?

I earn shit so I can come down on everybody!! ;)

I would say that if I lived in Sydney I wouldn't be playing golf. Considering the dearest game of golf I've every played was at Pelican Waters, and that was 50bucks. You could also say that I'm a cheapskate too!

After playing at Nambour, I saw a Peregian Springs (http://www.peregianspringsgolfclub.com.au/) leaflet on the noticeboard. They have an open comp on one Sunday of the month for $49.50. If you break your handicap, you get a prize of some sort.

The dates are: 3/1, 7/2, 7/3, 11/4, 2/5, 6/6.
http://www.peregianspringsgolfclub.com.au/contents/5719

It's a private golf club, so I will be keen to take advantage of this offer on one of those dates. Although I can already rule Jan, Feb and June out.

Sounds good. Looks like a nice course. Doesnt look like you could book groups as such. Have to fill in entry form to get spot in the draw. Still be a good day for 50 bucks though.

According to Ashgrove's fixture book, they have open comps on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. I have no idea of price, but I can't imagine it being too much. Every third Thursday appears to be a Blue Marker comp too, if that's your bag.

I don't remember it being a good course, but it's nice to try different courses sometimes.

I also made note of a few other Sunshine Coast open comps coming up.
26/3 - horton park open
17-18/9 - Noosa Lakes Open - Tew/Noosa
25/9 - Glasshouse Mountains Open champs - Northlakes
2/10 - Mt Coolum Open
9/10 - SC&SBDGA Open - Kingaroy
15-16/10 - Nambour Open
30/10 - Peregian Springs Open

The Sunshine Coast golf website, http://www.sunshinecoastgolf.org, is a good resource for these and other comps.

Brookwater is having it's annual Brookwater Open on Monday 13th June (Queens Birthday holiday).

$65 for single stroke off the plates, with the pins in tough spots. Good 'value' for money, as you get to play the full course for a change...

So, now that it appears that I do this golf thing again, and have a handicap maintenance membership, I'm interested in knowing what open comps are out there, particularly on the weekends.

I've gone back through the old sticky, and greyed everything out, as it has not been updated for a long time, but some parts may still be true.
https://www.ozgolf.net/showthread.php/473-SE-Qld-OPEN-Days

I (https://www.ozgolf.net/showthread.php/473-SE-Qld-OPEN-Days) booked myself a round for McLeod tomorrow morning. Although their Saturday comp isn't open to visitors typically, if you give them a call on Thursday or Friday, they usually have open spots. 25 bucks isn't too bad either.

After Daves gave a good report on the condition of Windaroo, I gave them a call to see what the go is with their weekend comps. A little bit more expensive that I was hoping, but it might be worth a trip to revisit one of these days.

I'm trying to find somewhere to play tomorrow, but it's a bit tougher when it is Monthly Medal day. There are plenty of spots available at Brisbane River, but full groups only, which doesn't help me much as a single. It's bloody cheap though at $15 on Saturdays. Apparently the course is a bit dry, as there water got cutoff at some stage, but they are now watering again, however the 14th is currently out of play. I might play there next week, and concede on tomorrow and just do pitch n putt instead.

Sandy Gallop? I'll be looking for a game next Saturday when I'm up there and will probably play Sandy as it's convenient.

I did Sandy Gallop last year, and don't feel the need for a quick return. I could try other options for tomorrow (Ipswich, Rosewood, Ashgrove), but I'm getting carried away with my excitement in playing golf again, and should just stick to one round a weekend, which will be Monday. My neighbour has shown interest in playing Brisbane River next Saturday though.

I haven't played there since 2011, according to my records, and that was since they changed the design. Tezza, a member here, plays there, and he is happy with his membership. If I was still looking to play tomorrow, that was probably going to be the next place that I was going to call.
