View Full Version : Special: 2010 Champs Draw

PeteyD
6th September 2010, 08:39 AM
For those of you that do not know.

Draw for Round 1 will be conducted on Friday Evening (8th October). The field is split into 4 groups, designed to spread the interstate visitors up with the regulars, and to split up the guys that always play together during the year (nudgee mafia etc) as much as possible. A random draw is then done with one person from each of these groups going to each tee time.

This was quite successful last year. Just worked as Barrel Girl, which stopped him complaining about the arbitrary rigging of the draw that went on at previous champs. I would prefer a more visually appealing barrel girl, but Christina Hendricks has once again politely declined. Volunteers are asked for. Bikini is optional.

Please note that there is no way to ensure you play with someone. However if there is someone you will not get through the day without putting a 4 iron through their head, send me a PM and I will totally ignore your request.

Sundays draw is seeded based on how you went on Saturday, and the magical computer program Peter_RS uses. Sunday only players please note that this means you will be hitting off in the first group/s.

So far the only proviso is that the suckers who end up drawing me are in the first group on Saturday, as I have to bugger off to coach football for a while after the round. Alas no alcohol for me during saturday's round.

I have had an interesting proposal for a themed group. I am considering allowing it. This will of course take them out of the draw (other than their group allocation). I am waiting on a written submission to evaluate before making my decision. I feel like an independent!

If thats the case open it up to everyone to put together themed groups if they wish or just put together themed groups as per Palm Meadows. No point in having a draw if it's only a draw from some.

Peteyd, you may recall i mentioned I am playing matchplay on the day one of the champs, and I may need to guarantee the last group tee time?
Assuming that my opponent agrees to play at 6am instead of the scheduled time!

If not, well you do now. I have since found out that I have the option of playing my match any day prior to the saturday as well. However I will not know who my opponent is until about the Monday before the champs at the latest. So i am still unable to commit to playing late if at all until then. As you are not doing the draw until the friday night I cant imagine this is going to stuff you around too much, cos if i am lucky, it wont be an issue.

PeteyD

It sucks. you'll be stuck from Nudgee right up to the Deagon Deviation if coming along the Gateway. Sometimes the Bruce Highway can suck as well though Burpengary, but it might be ok.

I drive in the opposite direction (back towards Brisbane) along that stretch most afternoons at that time. Fridays are particularly bad.

Groupings for he draw are done.

We have 3 reserve spots for Saturday which sux a bit. These will be in the draw so it is random whether you play as a 3 or 4.

3 golfers are only playing Saturday (Timah and Poidda and CanuckDownUnder) so that means we will have 46 for Sunday, or 45 if Chops is true to form, so only 2 groups of 3. Remember Sunday is seeded based on Saturday, so the 3s will be the first 2 groups off.

There have been no substantial bribes forthcoming, so everyone that said they don't want to play with SMS needs to see what happens on Friday Night.

Eag's has volunteered to be Barrel Girl. Hope he shaves his legs before wearing the bikini.

Pete, not sure whether this will have any impact on groups, but given i'm a homeless/non-handicapped Saturday only player, is it worth pairing the Canuck and I together in a group of 4? Not sure how 'official' you want the marking of cards, but this way, the other two in the group can mark each others (and return them to their club)? I'm not sure if a non-handicapped player can sign a card given the rule changes for handicapping lately.
Just thinking out aloud.

PeteyD
1st October 2010, 01:05 PM
Nope. You go in the draw with everyone else. We are not that strict on cards etc, as long as everyone has a separate card the scorers are happy. The whole thing is a social get together more than anything else. We do have faith in everyone to recod the correct score.

Surely Pelican Waters being a sand based course will be fine?

The Lakes/Lagoons had risen by probably the best part of 2m and had spilled over into a lot of the bunkers. The water hazard across the 5th actually had water in it! so much so that it was probably a 40/50m carry across it to just in front of the green. And if you went off the back you were wet as well!

About half the bunkers were out of play on Saturday, though I think they all should have been. Barely saw one that you could actually drop in. All bunkers were out of play and overflowing on Sunday. The Lagoon down the side of the 16th had overflowed to the extent that the green was all but surrounded by water! In a lot of places if you went into the water you had to first determine if the ball had actually crossed the hazard line, which could have been in 10 to 20 metres from the water's edge!

There would be tens of dozens of balls lost in the bunkers alone, too deep and too murky to find!

And the wind was even worse than the rain most of the time. Most used Driver into the Par 3 4th (187m) on Sunday, and then we struggled to get the ball to the green! The number of trees crashing down that we heard or saw on the back nine on Sunday was getting scary! I believe SMS had one crash in the middle of his back swing on the 17th.

The fairways generally were actually in great condition, you would almost say superb and casual water was quite manageable most of the time. And the greens were very good in the conditions, to the extent that a few were actually quite hard and very difficult to stop a ball on.

All the more reason to have a lash at the green in two, with impunity!! I reckon I heard my approach shot splash land from 200m away!

My wedge approach (3rd shot) actually plugged about 2 inches from the top of the LH bunker greenside. Chipped to a few feet for par;)

Is that the one that landed about 10m behind me?

poidda hit first and didn't get there, so i figured i was no chance. I think my approach shot caught a thermal and ended up closer than anticipated....
