Pelican Waters favours a golfer who is capable of keeping the ball in play, is strong from the sand, and a little sublime iron play doesn't go astray. Putting the dots off it doesn't hurt, but I tend to think the greens at PW evens out the field.
So....
From the above list name who you think is the strongest...

My tips are (unsurprisingly) heavily weighted towards the FNQers:
DRIVER: Haysey. Not long enough to get into too many of the fairway bunkers, and even his mishits find the short stuff.
BUNKER PLAY: I'll give this one to myself. 5/6 sand saves in the 2nd round last year. 8)
IRON PLAY: Tomson is a flusher and can play all sorts of shot shapes. The only thing that may catch him out is never having seen the course before.
NAGA FAVOURITE: Seriously? Betting needs to be suspended if anyone puts money on anyone other than Solarman. As Haysey said yesterday "Pelican Waters is going ask a lot of questions for which Solarman just does not have the answers."
FAVE TO WIN: I'm keen to see what odds Bruce is paying. ;)

I am leaning towards Mr Shorts (SMS) to win this. For one, he has a home course advantage and two, he has a good all round game. Three, he hits it long which is a real advantage at Pelican in holding approach shots for realistic birdie chances. Four, he is such a lovely fellow, despite his preference for cross-dressing, makes him the popular favourite.

BUNKER PLAY: Razaar, haven't seen him play in a while but is SOLID
IRON PLAY:The PILOT, Even if his iron play is off, it's pretty darn good and if he is hitting the fairways we are screwed
NAGA FAVOURITE: - I will have to go with the Tall ones words and back SOLARMAN

IRON PLAY: I'd like to play with PTP so I can witness his awesomeness for myself

DRIVER: I'm going to say Iain as well. He has this nice little 3-5 yard gay fade going on at the moment that has "fairway-finder" written all over it.
BUNKER PLAY: SMS is always rather handy out of the sand. I also tend to go alright as I love bunkers and hate chipping. I have far better sand-save stats than greenside chipping up-n-downs. (Although the powder bunkers of PH did my head in last year.)
IRON PLAY: Iain again. He flushes his long irons. Handicap of 11 my arse.
NAGA FAVOURITE: Me. 30th B'day Friday + crippled = chop fest
FAVE TO WIN: DC68: The king of the three-chuck-eagle has an uncanny ability to shoot his lights out while barely being able to walk. He has also recently acquired a chopper's handicap as well. Although if he's sober for either round he'll shoot 90.

6000m is a doddle, but I dont recall there being that much difference between the two rounds, maybe we played off back blues or forward blacks? The only hole I recollect playing longer/harder on Sunday was the 18th, - had 210m left compared to a 4 iron on Sat.
henno
6th September 2010, 08:19 PM
The 10th is a snack. I'm tipping birdies both days again for me, although I'm not sure which tactic to go with:
1. Pull hook to cart path, push second into trees/bark right, punch 8-iron to 4 feet and sink the putt.
or
2. Try to fly bunker and fail, wedge out due to huge face on bunker, stiff a 5-iron, sink the putt.
Both methods proved to be equally effective. Decisions, decisions.

Reasonably wide (16 is an obvious exception), however the ideal line on most holes is close to one of the edges. Of course it is penal if you miss any of them.

New handicaps mean there are plenty of genuine burglars out there. No way I am putting money on anyone. JUST has some great form although the test will be how he handles the black tees on Sunday....especially if the wind gets up. Any of the former single figures players who now languish in double digits will be a cause for concern. Moe, Nudgee etc.
SMS, PTP, etc the list is long for the scratch players with HCP's. SMS can seem to have driver problems from the times I have played with him. If paired with Ned his greatest handicap will be concentrating between Ned's phone calls and calls for another shout.
Genuine B graders need not apply. No consistency to maintain it across 2 days.
BV hasn't managed to chop his HCP out enough to be a burglar but that is because he is so consistent. If his head isn't hurting as much as the last Sunday he is a good chance. Playing consistenly at Brookwater is no mean feat....RESPECT.

I'll rehash my form guide from last year.....
Feel free to add your own thoughts & predictions. Mine are:-
Shavey. Always a chance. Plays too much golf at work to rule out. No chance, it's not a corporate day.
Jarro. Long shot, but will be a chance if the wind gets up (and over him). has shown improvement, but still has question marks over big day performances.
BrisVegas. No chance. Won it all in 07 and hasn't seen his 'A' game since. Saw my 'B' game the other day, might crack top 10.
Goonie. Will bring 3 entire sets of clubs and will be too confused to threaten. Bringing the mother in law this year. No chance.
AndyP. Red hot fave. The thinking golfer's runner. Will keep it in play and out of trouble and I'd be surprised if this is not his year. ozgolf's 2nd best 12 hcapper. Strong chance.
Rusty. Form of late unknown, but historically strong. Might be overwhelmed by the occasion. no idea? does rusty play anymore?
Billy. mate of poidda's, so probably a burgler. Big chance. scratched
Iain. Capable of shooting a good score anywhere. Too contented romantically these days to be a real chance though. has lost the edge. still seems under-handicapped. A solid chance as always.
PeteyD. Has runs on the board at Reddy Bay. Will it translate to a watery, toight, resort layout? Prob too distracted with organising the champs to win the champs. Will he make it back from the soccer?
haysey. Most likely to suffer in high winds. Slim chance. But will have a good view of proceedings. Haysey-copter will struggle with tight fairways and ho-down distractions.
Bruce. Fancied interstater. Renowned for his 'A' grade style. All depends on whether he's sporting a 'tache this year. Another, massively underhandicapped ozgolfer. Strong chance.
Eag's. All depends on the barrier draw and the number of rums. In the right group, ie. fast rum drinkers, he could come from NAGA to win this. no chance of NAGA this year.
DC. won the last champs at a brutal layout like this. Totally depends on drinking. Could be a late scratching. Will definitely spew both days. His handicap is WHAT these days?? All depends on the fluid intake.
peter_rs. Mr Consistency, oddly enough, given the enormous belting he gives the ball. haven't seen him play for ages. Been busy elsewhere building houses.
shazza_rs. Mrs Consistency and will probably belt Mr Consistency off the bat if she fires up. Best Associate in the field.
damoocow. good pick for a placing. No form to win
kpac. roughie. Have a $1 each way. Has ho'd a heap lately. Too distracted. Good chance in a trifecta
Scarfie1. no form of late. Any late mail? scratching
sms. unbackable fave for low gross. Gun of the field. However, is massively handicapped by weight, shorts, blades, left-handedness. Even money to score a supergoal. Add Pings to other impediments. No chance again, despite playing home track.
Just. Will have the most Pings of anyone in the field. Steadily improving, stayer. Will be thereabouts. Short odds for a long argument over politics. Playing good golf too.
Goughy. I wouldn't back him with your money. no change
Courty. No chance. shanking, so watch out on his right. Hasn't done anything of note in SEQ. Still shanking. Has turned over more clubs than House of golf. No chance
blakey. Too much course for the old hooker. Might be a show if it's howling. Still old, still hooking.
BrisWesty. see jarro. Playing with a renewed vigour since quitting his job
Nudgee. see goonie. value pick if a melee breaks out. Too distracted with hoing clubs to FNQ crew.
GCSwinger. used to this style of course. Not much ozg form tho. good value roughie
Gazgolf1. Mr Consistency's really consistent uncle. Good value. Use him as an anchor in your trifectas. Not a kpac trifecta though.
PetethePilot. Mystery runner from parts unknown. Unbackable fave for a repeat win. Now has bionic knees.
Moe Norman. Lives on the course. Poor value unless his odds drift out. Watch out for his iron play. Does Moe play golf still? Always entertaining.
DDasey. unable to comment. chopper copper.
davemason. defending champ. Always immaculately presented. A repeat win not out of the question. Hes been doing lots of sandwork in secrecy out on Great Keppell. scratching
senecio. too much hoing, plenty of pace, no rhythm. roughie.
Ned Kelly. putts with a wedge. FNQ's most notorious burglar. Hoing has gotten seriously out of control since his release from prison.
Henno. anything's possible. Rooming with sms could be a factor. Even money to score a supergoal. Henno-copter is a slim chance if he plays conservatively. Unlikely
Grunt. no chance. will possibly hit one into Pumicestone Passage if he really winds up. scratching
Baz. unable to comment. Good value. Not so much for the golf, but good value all the same!
Nuttedit. mate of poidda's, is definitely a burgler. Big chance. Still a burglar. top 10 at worst
Gregh. matchplay semi-finalist. shows promise scratching
steverawlo. Another local qualifier. Comfortable on the coast, and has same strengths as jarro and westy. mid-field at best. Podium chance if there is a card night.
Lucasto23. Surprisingly solid chance carrying a light weight. Will struggle this year with the weight of ball and chain around his neck.
Jono. see goughy. Short odds for powerlifting prize. Long drive specialist.
Razaar. see blakey, but older and more opinionated. Could contend for gross.
Kev. mystery trifecta chance. Late mail is he's a scratching. As in "playing off scratch'!
Hux. Who'd bet against him? May need to sell all his clubs to pay for fuel to get home in the XR6T. overhandicapped still and he's getting lessons now. look for him as the nett winner.
Poidda. Will win the punt. Back whatever he's backing. Crook knees and bub due soon. Is he a scratching?
Choppa. will he play Sunday? Was top 3 after first round in 07. Needs to monitor fluid intake. Occasional golfer, but natural talent. Hard to go past, especially when coming in cold. ozgolf's best 12 hcap.
Mrs Lucasto23. unable to comment. Ball and Chain
Daves. unable to comment. Massive ho. Lefthanded unfortunately. Reasonable chance.
*Disclaimer - these comments are meant in jest, light-hearted and not meant to cause (too much) offence. Please feel free to put it back on me if you don't like what I've dreamed up about you!
Newbies:-
oxy - solid chance for nett, given his 27/26/24/23/22/21/watch this space (plummeting) hcap.
Tomson - The best 21 hcap in the world. Only average as a 5 hcap, however. Too easily distracted by flashy shafts.
Solarman - mystery man. Expect to see him in rubber gimp suit. Won't cope with the 'away' game pressure.
XRay - very underrated. Lots of handicap and ballstriking ability.
jaybam - sober. That's an advantage for starters.
Shannon (GC's mate) - unknown quantity. Mystery trifecta?
virge666 - late night antics will hurt his chances. quality player though
CobraSS - quiet achiever. A chance for the gross as always.
Timah! - unknown quantity. just like last year's winner.
Canuckdownunder - He's Canadian. 'nuff said.
Oz - unknown quantity. just like last year's winner.

Nahh....twas off my game from inside 80m to about 20m today which was the main problem, plus it took me nine holes to get a putt to drop (the front was 43 which would have looked better if 3 or 4 off the lip outs had dropped) ..the quad was justa comedy of errors included a 3 putt....hmmmm so did two of the doubles for that matter!!

especially when most club golfers only have about 1 good round in 10 (if that). I wouldnt be putting my money on anyone that has form leading in, cos the next good one is a long way away.
Rather i would be looking at someone slipping in under the radar, like who has had a huge increase in their handicap in recent times, starting to flatten out the scores with an edge towards improving but next to no chance of losing any shots in the meantime.

"Making it to Friday night favours a golfer who is capable of keeping themselves in play, is strong from the start, and a little lime & water doesn't go astray. Drinking midstength doesn't hurt, but I tend to think the lack of drinks girl at Horton Park evens out the field."

I agree with you Dion, someone who should be a 10 to 12 who has somehow snuck out to 16. Especially as it looks like the wind might not be as big a factor as last year. That brings high ball hitters who spray it a little back into the fold.
I myself am just trying to win 'Best trousers on Saturday for a hacker over 40" and to finish somewhere around 3 or 4 over on the gross!

I have always intended to post this spreadsheet, but keep forgetting or couldn't be bothered.
It lists the finishing positions of all OZgolfers in all previous Champs. For a bit of fun, I have broken those positions down into a percentile ranking; 100% for 1st, 0% for last, and evenly spread in between. The sheet is listed in order of the best average percentile and I've filtered out players who aren't playing this year.
On previous form, expect Bruce and Vegas to be thereabouts again.

my 'ranking' got shafted with my almost dead last at the first champs in a very small field. Otherwise i have been 'up there'.
Though i think you would agree that with such a small amount of data its really hard to find a fair indicator.
did you consider using POTY money? or just simply how many players beaten on the day and average them. (though i guess the latter is the same thing)

Why do my odds come in when I have a good round, but don't go out when I have a bad one?
