View Full Version : How many Courses have you played?

petethepilot
28th August 2010, 09:26 PM
I was really really bored the other night coming home from China. I gave some thought to where I have played and kept a running total. Appears that all up I have played 255 different courses!

53 International and 202 Domestic including 99 in Queensland!

Any body other than Andrew beat that?

For what it is worth,
My top 5 are as follows in no particular order;

Royal County Down;
St Andrews Old;
Newcastle GC NSW;
Kingston Heath; and
National 'Old'.

Regards,

Pete

Interestingly, you have 2 courses that are not far from Newcastle in two different countries.

petethepilot

Only you and I would know that Andrew! Both are not exactly forgiving for a wayward driver!

Scottt
29th August 2010, 01:27 AM
And both "Newcastle" courses are credited to men who have a co-design with Alister MacKenzie... One of whom also designed Northumberland GC in Newcastle, England!

I'm currently on 136 and should be on about 144 or 145 in 11 countries by the time I get home at the start of November.

Currently
85 in Aus
35 in England
8 in Scotland
3 in Ireland
1 in Belgium
1 in Portugal
1 in Egypt
1 in Czech Republic
1 in New Zealand

I'll play 1-2 in France in Sept and 5-6 in the USA in October, and hopefully another 1-2 around London before I ship out.

Too hard to pick bests or favourites.

Andrew's list would make your eyes water. He is said to have given up counting them somewhere between 750 and 800.

Somewhere in the order of 250, I think I counted 200+ a few years ago - but I doubt I've added many more to that tally since.

About 80 in the UK, 100+ in Australia and at least 30 in New Zealand. About 8-10 in the US and then random ones in Europe and Asia to finish off the tally.

Webster

At last rough count it was a little more than 200. Andrew is clearly miles ahead of anyone else here. He must be a real slacker to have played that many different courses.

Scott, which US courses did you end up organising games for on your way home?

Pete, got me easily, am 163 in 8 countries. We did the numbers at work the other day, split our favourites into courses you could play everyday and great experiences. Mine were :

Everyday - RCD, Tralee, NSW
Great Exp. - Lahinch, Kauri Cliffs, Royal Adelaide, Portmarnock, National (Moonah)

petethepilot

You have some good ones Perry!

I thought when I started I might get to 100, but when I started writing them down I realised it was a lot more. The break up is as follows;

99 in QLD with the best being....(the old Kooralbyn)
41 in NSW .......(Newcastle, but I would say that as I was a member there!)
42 in VIC ....(Kingston Heath followed by RM West followed by Woodlands/Peninsular North)
16 in WA....(Kennedy Bay)
9 in ACT...(Royal Canberra)
2 in SA....(Royal Adelaide)
1 in TAS ...(Barny)
1 in NT...(Darwin)

211 Domestically

Internationally;

8 in Scotland ...(the Old course, Carnoustie, Muirfield, Royal Aberdeen, Gleneagles (Kings), Dunbar, Levin Links, Londin Links)
5 in England... (Royal Birkdale/St Georges/Lytham & St Annes, Wentworth, Farnham)
4 in South Africa
3 in Zimbabwe
2 in Japan
3 in Hong Kong
2 in Malaysia
3 in Thailand
2 in Singapore
3 in PNG
3 in NZ
1 in Fiji
1 in Pakistan
5 in Hawaii
6 in Mainland USA

Therefore 53 internationally, and 264 in total. (I just played Clearwater Bay in HK and a good public course called Oak Quarry in Southern California)

Regards,

Pete

p.s. At least I was still awake Shaun!!

p.p.s Bad luck about the Sea Eagles Perry!

You'll all be happy to know that, due to my knee op, I haven't played a new course for over 12 months when I was in America last year.

He must be a real slacker to have played that many different courses.

I use to wear my course count like a badge of honour, until I realised that I was playing courses I didn't like (especially resort courses in America) just to add to my count. These days I prefer to play courses I like, whether I've played them before or not.

Courty,

To be honest, I remember only a little of the course itself. Of course, there were several visually spectacular holes by the ocean. The rest was a blur of rice paddies and Asian caddies giving me distances in yards.

Marto, have heard a lot of people say that about Pebble. Do you think it just gets built up to the point where it can never be as good as what you imagine.

I played Pebble in 1990. Went there with 3 mates and while there were some great golf holes there, it just feels like a park ...when you drive along Seventeen Mile Drive, you look out the window and say Ïs THAT Pebble ?? Plus .... the Seventh Hole was out of play ... we had to play a temporary hole next to it - big mood killer.. Give me NSW any day - or Spyglass.

I know this sounds absurd .... but Pebble needs a fence around it so you cant see it from the road.

Andrew
31st August 2010, 06:57 AM
I agree Pebble is overrated, but this is mainly because is ranks within the world Top 10. I would have it somewhere in the high 20's or low 30's, which still makes it an excellent course, but it doesn't compare to the other courses in the world Top 10 I have played.

Of course, this argument gets me in trouble with some of the Americans over on the GCA web site.

petethepilot
31st August 2010, 08:53 AM
I haven't played Peeble but I've walked a bit of it. The day I was there, the 18th green was out of play and one of the most famous finishing holes in golf played as a 320 yard par 4 to a temporary green. The club was still charging $350US (1994 DOLLARS) for a round.

On a different note, the reason I've played so many Oz courses is that I've lived (courtesy of the RAAF) in every state except SA and TAS. The UK/Ireland courses are due to several 'pilgrimages' to the Open champs! The Asia/Pacific courses are due to QANTAS!

The sad thing about American golf vrs UK/Ireland golf is that you must have to know someone to get a game! I have got on some of the most exculsive courses in the UK (Muirfield, St Georges, Wentworth) just by letter writing and other protocols. I haven't got on anywhere in the US by following similar methods despite being a low marker and a member of a 'Royal' club (and another top 15 course)! Private club there is different to the rest of the world.

Rule:
16. A course can only be counted as played, in lists of total courses played, if all holes are played on said course. When a course has 27 holes, only 18 holes need to be played for that course to count, but if all 27 holes are played, it does not count as 2 courses.

The 27-hole thing has come up with mates who count their courses.

What my mates and I have tended to agree is that if it's an 18-hole main course with a 9-hole relief nine (like Royal Canberra, for example) it counts as two. If it's a club like Prince's in England (sorry, can't think of a local example) that has three individual nines that get combined differently as a regular thing, it counts as one course.

Not that it is a matter of life and death... decide your own measure and use it.

144 for me at the moment. Was hoping to break 150 this year but with Dec 31 bearing down on us I am not sure if I will make it.

Not sure RC is the best example. The members play all 27 holes in each comp. I still think 10-27 is the best course there anyway.

Corowa is another example. I think Catalina might be another.

Then you get Keperra, where the 3rd nine is clearly an abomination.

Unless it has 36 holes, it's one course imo.

Olympic Club, as an example, has

Lake Course - 18 hole par 71.
Ocean Course - 18 hole par 71.
Cliffs Course - 9 hole par 27.

How many courses is that for the basis of counting courses played?

I find the concept of "how many courses you have played" to be a bit pointless really (a bit like telling everyone how many fat/ugly chicks you banged when you were single), although I understand the reasons why some keep a record.

I'd find it more interesting to see how many courses everyone has played more than once.

Only because you haven't played that many.

More than once doesn't mean much either, as it may only mean twice. Maybe playing a course 10 times should be the mark.

I can't really be bothered counting any of it these days.

Of my 144, I have played 51 (that I recall) more than once and 24 of them five or more times.

Tell me how many you have played to this point & I’ll work it out for you. It’s quite a complex mathematical formula.

3, but only because they are genuinely 3 different tracks, and not interchanged etc like some 27 hole courses.

Eg. RM has 2 courses, but 3 different combinations. I would count it as 2 courses.

Indooroopilly has 36 holes, but in that it has West, East, Long Pocket, River, Captains, Presidents & Open course! It's still only 2 courses though, just because they have so many variations doesn't mean you count it 7 times!

I've confused the issue though, really just best to use your own measure - doesn't matter anyway.

Moe,

I wasn't referring to counting holes or nines twice, what I meant was the main course would count as one and the extra nine would count as a nine hole course.

Scottt
22nd November 2010, 03:43 PM
Another example - Pine Valley has the main course and a 10 hole short course. That to me is two courses. Likewise at augusta.

I love that line. When I was a bank teller I asked that question of the young lady customer who i was filling out a form for (doesnt everyone?)
and she exclaimed at the top of her sexy but husky voice.
"WHAT? YOU DONT KNOW WHERE HUMPTY DOO IS, HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN DARWIN?

I said "umm, since yesterday?"

well i thought it was funnier than Andyp's answer, and it gave me a massive edge in Trivial Pursuit.
