I just don't particularly like playing at overpriced resort courses where it's compulsory to ride in a buggy.

"Top 100" is such a subjective term.

Mike,

Missed this. When the course was first built, the chief who was signing the cheques for Daikyo, Mr Yokahama, actually wanted a recording of applause built into the cup so when a golfer putted out, the ball would fall into the cup and trigger the applause. When he was told it was not possible to do, he wanted a cup that would at least make some sound when the ball fell into it, hence the cups that are there today. True story.

I was told not that long ago that only one other golf course in Australia uses those cups, being Joondalup CC in Perth. I think he may have also used them early on at Palm Meadows as well.

Beat me down with one of your manbags?

That is fact, and can easily be verified in person by another who was there during construction and grow in if you want. All depends on how much you want to lose

Remember, Mr Yokahama was the guy who was not happy with the level of the lake RHS 9 tee, LHS 17 tee, just before opening as it was being filled by excess water from the quarry up behind the driving range. Directive - run a pipe and pumps to Kewarra Beach and fill it with seawater. That's over 2km as the crow flys and that's how it was filled. He was like the old guy out of Jurassic Park - spared no expense.

OK. But Mr Yokohama doesn't own the place any longer, so can we get rid of them? They sound cheap & tinny & frikkin' terrible! They ruin my golfing experience!! ;)

BrettM
9th September 2010, 08:30 PM
They have to enhance your golfing experience, as when you hear it you know you've made it through that hole!

All, unavoidably PP is aerating greens on Monday 18.

ST does not aerate until Monday 25 and will be in good nick. Unfortunately, as Jack and I are members at GCA in the US, the architecture component falls down between the two tracks.

Can you guys organise a fake tan session for Jack before the game? Every Victorian I've seen over the last month has legs like an albino.

It's that frikking hot today that if he wears shorts next weekend he's going to fry.

Love your work, thanks for calling in that favour just for Jack. ;)

FWIW, I played at PP last Friday morning. The course was quite soft (to be expected) from all the rain, so there was little run and a few lost plugged balls. The greens were very receptive for the same reason, but were beautiful putting surfaces.

;)Spot on.

Actually apart from the 6th the fairways are quite generous. All the par 5s are genuine 3 shot holes. Oh and the 5th fairway is pretty hard to hit (i've never actually played my 2nd from the fairway. Ever). And the 11th does my head in more than any hole I've ever played. And there are tin cups in the holes.

I've never played to my potential there. I've lost 4 matchplays there. I've played there probably 12 times and have a total of 1 point on the 11th. Seriously. I've never hit the 5th or 6th fairways. It's expensive. I'm not used to greens that big so green in reg and then 4 putts is normal for me. Wasps attack me on the 9th. The noise the cups make shits me. Miss the fairway and you're fkd. I miss the fairways a lot. I tore a calf muscle walking down the steps to the 16th green once. I once put my tee shot on the top tier of 16 with the pin down the front. You can imagine what happened next. I play off 11 and will be happy to break 90. The 11th does my head in. Buggies are compulsory.

You want more?

Mareeba is now our backup plan.jesus this is getting worse.

Mareeba is in the worst condition I've seen it in 5 years. The greens are screwed and the fairways are a mess. How about Atherton?

BrettM
22nd October 2010, 03:09 PM
OK - PP is wet around the edges. Fairways and greens are good, a number of bunkers have minor washouts and some water in them. If it stops raining now, with nothing tonight, it will play soft and highly likely that carts will be on paths tomorrow. A wet PP is still miles ahead of a dry Mareeba.

As an aside, ST is drying out well. Carts are out on fairways with the exception of holes 10, 12, 16, 17 & 18. Again, if it doesn't rain anymore then those fairways will likely be 90 degree rule tomorrow. Thanks to the sand base we are actually pretty good.

Courty
22nd October 2010, 04:24 PM
OK, now I'm confused, although I do agree with this one:

A wet PP is still miles ahead of a dry Mareeba.

BrettM

Played my Club Match Play this afternoon at Mareeba,

The front nine greens were renovated two weeks ago with coring, dethatching and top dressing (Sand and fertiliser).

The back nine was completed this week.

In the last three weeks we have only had our first decent rain in 6 months, prior to that we had had an inch in total or there abouts.

The fairways and green surrounds have been mowed however due to the work on the greens there obviously hasn’t been time to mow the roughs.

The tees have also been given some renovation attention as well.

Mareeba has one paid ground staff and due to other agendas there now isn’t the “Dad’s” Army to assist.

Must say I haven’t seen or played greens this soft in Mareeba for years (though we have been spoilt with usually nice putting surfaces for a long time), and even most members have commented that you actually fix pitch marks on the 7th, 12th, 14th and 16th greens (and the ball stops short of the flag).

Independent soil testing has been done and subject to this the renovations have been managed to the recommendations. (Soil test results are posted on the Club Notice Board in the Bar)

It would be good to have a Blog like Brett has for Sea Temple, although other agendas would still use rumour and innuendo to dispel published and professional qualified fact.

Ill actually be including Brett’s Blog and his reasoning behind it in the next Club Competition results that are emailed out to the Members as well as published in the local rags.

If the price at PPGC is not a reasonable local’s rate like STCC presently have, I would certainly choose Mareeba over it wet or dry.

Won my MP 4/2, had about 4 birdies. (Was 5 up after 5 holes).

I'm sorry if it doesn't suit everyone, but a call had to be made. Please let us know in this thread tonight if you are all in or out.

Group 2:

If Julie & Russell are out, we can either keep the groups as is & play in 3s, or DCanto/ Mike can jump in the first group. I'm not concerned about playing with Jack tomorrow as I'll be having a game with him in Melbourne in a few weeks.

Thanks Courty for organising, and for everyone else for turning up. The course was in great nick despite a lot of rain. Nice layout, just wish I knew how to putt on these greens - I aint got a clue!!

How were they different to what you're used to. Speed?

Speed, grain, accuracy, distance, and a dodgy stroke!

Thanks to everyone for turning out. It was great to host another pseudo-celebrity OZgolfer ;). Jack was a real trooper and never once considered pulling out due to the conditions.

After a shaky early morning start, the weather turned out to be pretty bloody good. The course was pretty good considering the amount of rain we've had. As I said last week, the greens were great (I just wish I got to see them a bit more often ).

Been busy this afternoon, just got back home and realised I was in such a rush I forgot to get everyone's scores for POTY results. Can everyone please fill in the gaps?

That seems a little unfair. Don't I get any points for showing up?

I was 27 under par. Did you miss it?

Courty

You'll be DQ'ed for using someone else's clubs, because you certainly didn't have any of your own.

Did you not see me putting with Mikes putter? That alone was worth the price of admission.

Julie

I think Courty should get extra points for that magnificent club chuck we all witnessed on the 16th!

This would have been a half decent photo apart from the dumbass with his stupid fat finger over the lense.
