I've been toying with the idea of getting one, but my question is in two parts? have you found that they have improved your game? and what are the best value for money? as i have seen some really cheap ones on flebay.

you know, that elusive 3 or 4 shots around the green that us (well crap) lesser players struggle to find

They may well help some and I am all for finding that elusive 3 or 4 or 10 shots a round.

Personally I find I can do the same thing with a 7 iron which leaves room in my bag for something else........

What club would you leave out to cater for a chipper?

I guess, i played a round the other day and my brother in laws dad had one, and used it top good effect, the 7 iron chip and run is a good option, which i use but i woundered if the chipper was a better option?

Had a Niblick which was great, but copped some much crap from my mates I had to retire it. Use 8 iron now and am hopeless.

Do chippers come with headcovers?

I virtually use all of my clubs to chip, depending on how far I want it to carry versus how far I want it to roll (as a ratio; the distance to the cup is determined by the size of my swing).

I am one who always encourages hoing, however in this instance I would strongly advise either lessons or practice.

If you go down this path make sure you get a Tour chipper.

Rather than buying a club that is hopeless from anywhere more than 10 metres out, try practising. Spend an hour on the practise green with three or four balls with your lob wedge, sand wedge, 7 iron, hybrid.

Getting up and down is the key to good scoring

Buy a Cleveland Niblick.

Buy Solarman's Cleveland Niblick.

Alternatively, there may be some 1980's chippers in the $5 bins at the golf ranges or larger golf stores.

I use a hybrid, but if I felt a chipper would genuinely lower my scores I wouldn't hesitate the carry one.

my 23* hybrid seems to be able to achieve the same results, maybe not quite get as much air as needed sometimes.

Just wait until they are used en masse on tour. Then they're not ghey. Weren't hybrids ghey until they were used on tour a fair bit?

Do Courty, Haysey and Tomson know you refer to them as mates Solarman? ;)

Pros will never get an advantage out of them though, because their technique is sound. There is a lesson in that somewhere.

If you go down this path make sure you get a Tour chipper.

And knowing you - a Titliest tour chipper... or shall we just go and play a "better chipper" from Srixon.

:)

Seriously though... grip way down the shaft so that your right forefinger is on the steel under the grip with a 7 iron and put the ball on your back foot. Let the club sit on it's toe so the shaft is almost vertical.

Now use a putting stroke ... You now have a chipper.

If you cannot do that - a chipper ain't going to help you either.

I'm all for getting one, but just double check which day the associates play at your club before buying it...

Ditto to the above comment

Whilst I enjoy hoing and do switch clubs in and out; they don't fix the problems anywhere near as much as practice and developing a range of shots in your arsenal to use when needed.

My god - did I just say that.... Anyways - off to buy yet another putter coz that'll fix my crap puttin stroke...:-)

I reckon one of these chippers could be handy at times, but I not sure if I can find room for it in the bag though?;
