A public holiday in NSW (I thought it was Australia wide?) and a new golfing experience for me. My first trip to Monash today. I would normally be unhappy with 30 points, but I hit the ball really well for the most part.

Monash has the most difficult greens I've ever played on. Ultra-quick and with slopes that don't look very severe, but the ball just will not stop when going downhill. Chipping for me is a bit of an adventure on my good days at the moment, but it was impossible for me today.

I holed two super-difficult downhillers, but also had 3 fifteen-foot return second putts (all of which I missed).

I'm not sure whether I want to go back or not.

played Par comp. turned 4 down and not playing that well.. went through without dropping a hole and birdied the last 4 to finish 0. not a bad result at the end of the day.

Monash is a great golf course Jim. Did you play with a member? It can be a tough course without knowledge of how to play 4, 6 and 13.

Anyway, I played at NSW yesterday with Andrew_S, and I shot a pretty good 36 points. Played well for most of the day but a stupid decision on 10 cost me 2 shots.

played comp on sunday at manly. forty pts and dropped another two shots to twenty one so i was happy.

Hit just one fairway all day and three greens in reg. stuck five pars and thirty four putts and three up and downs. virges work with my irons is really helping me scramble, once we get some semblance of driving in i should be getting solid low teens stuff going. had m first experkience of sticking a pitching wedge twenty feet past the pin and sucking it back to three foot.....that will keep me going for another few months no problems.

A work colleague of mine is a member, and he has been promising to invite me for some time. But he kept saying he wanted to wait until the course was in good nick before he'd arrange the game. What he really meant was that he was waiting for the greens to speed up.

13 was a piece of cake, and a perfect example of not knowing the bad spots, so you don't think about them, and then you play the hole perfectly by accident. My drive finished a yard short of the cliff, I hit a good, but safe 9 iron to the middle of the green, only for it to take a slope that I didn't know was there and finish two feet from the hole for easy birdie.

On the other hand, I was told where to hit it on 4, decided to hit a fade around the corner, only to nail a drive dead straight and through the fairway. I had no choice but to play for bogey. The 6th was one of the three times I tried to chip close only to three-putt after leaving myself well above the hole.

I think Monash is the toughest easy course I've ever played.

ParMaster
15th June 2010, 08:09 PM
I love Monash... and it is very cruel if you don't know what to expect. You think you have the speed of the greens, and then you get to the first only to play a green that slopes from front to back! And the thing is you think you've made a putt, and then it just trickles 15 feet by. It makes things very difficult.

And FWIW, the greens were stimping 13.5 when Monash Masters week was on, which is much quicker than the speed they will be for the US Open..

Anyway, I played at NSW yesterday with Andrew_S, and I shot a pretty good 36 points. Played well for most of the day but a stupid decision on 10 cost me 2 shots.

I walked off with 29 points. Could have been a whole lot better if:

(1) I had not tried to be a hero; and

(2) I had been able to putt inside 6 feet.

I still had an awesome time. NSW is pretty special.

You could have a chance at that, with those shiny Mizunos.

Unfortunately, Grunt off 20 will account for Tourettes, leaving the better-ball as a tie-breaker (and that won't be pretty for ACT).

Comp: Stableford
Conditions: Breezy
Score: 31pts (77)
ACR: 72

First game after about 8 weeks or due to various work, home duties, shit weather and being sick. I didn't know what to expect as I hadn't touched a club in all that time. It was great to be back out in amongst it though.

The game was fairly solid, and the score was not reflective of the way I pllayed as I missed plenty of short putts < 5 feet.

Was +4 after 7 and managed to get back to +1 after eagle on 13. Then proceeded to have 4 bogies in a row through 2 poor drives and 2 three putts.

Managed to get through the round with no lost balls, which is good.

Stats:

8 x bogies

Played my social club montly round at Dunheved yesterday. As I stood on the par 4 9th hole (my last hole as I started on the 10th) my marker tells me I was only 6 over par for the round. I said "What the?!" and then I said "Why did you tell me this now?" LoL. I hadnt really been keeping track all game and I thought I was about 9 or 11 over. So I was nervous as hell knowing a bogey at worst would get me that coveted score of 79 (something Ive been wanting for last 10 years). I managed to hit the wussiest of drives. It lands on the fairway but was about 190m to the pin. Took out my 5 wood and my knees and arms were shaking. Memories of pull hooks werent helping. Memories of duffing into the creek in front werent helping either. Somehow I willed myself to just hit the damn thing. It went SAAGB towards the green and it looked like it had the right distance. But then it moved left at the end of its flight and into the left bunker. The pin was only 3 paces from the left edge of the green and I was cursing myself "What a shitty place to leave it in!!". As I was addressing my shot in the bunker my heart was pounding so hard it felt like it would come out of my chest and hit me in the face. I took 3 or 4 of the deepest breaths Ive ever taken. I didnt care that my playing partners were all snickering at me knowing I was so nervous I could collapse. I take my shot and somehow it flew out of the sand perfectly and landed softly on the edge of the green and stops 1m from the cup. Ive never played a bunker shot that well - ever. But before i could pat myself on the back, I was now I looking at a downhill 1m putt. The ones which you practice for hours on end but can still bring you to your knees with fear. I couldnt stop my whole body from shaking so much that i was afraid the vibrations would cause me to move the ball as i addressed it. I take my putt and FFS! I pulled it left and down the hill it went stopping 2.5m. I give quiet yelp of "F**K!". Playing partners shout out a loud groan. Im devastated and I wanted to run and hide but knew I still had one last chance. Still shaking with nervouness, I line up the return putt. If I get this in, I break 80 for the first time ever. All the evil thoughts run through my head. "This may be your only chance". "You are a dead-set choker". "MTFU and get this in!". I take the putter back slowly and then putted....It goes in! You beauty!
I break 80!! Wooohoo!! High fives all round!! People standing around the clubhouse were probably thinking we were a bunch of girls with all the squeeling. That was the worst and best feelings Ive ever had on the golf course. I cant wait for my next game when I will no doubt shoot 100. =)

7 GIR
31 putts

In hindsight, I missed too many greens and didn't make enough par save putts. The Quad and doubles didn't help either. Driving was ok, other than fanning one into the lake on the first and just missing the 5th.
