View Full Version : What's the farthest away you've holed out from?

Courty
7th June 2010, 06:09 PM
In Saturday's round I hit a flop shot from about 15m that bounced once, spun up the flagstick and then dropped straight in the hole. I've had plenty go in from the fringes/ a few metres away, but that's the furthest out I have ever holed out from. I'm aware that plenty of people have holed out from further away, so what's your best?

I have holed a few wedge shots from around 100m, but my best would have been a 5 iron from 175m on a long par 4 back in the early nineties :)
Oh and almost forgot my ace at Brooky on the 5th 145m

165m 6 iron on the 13th at Ipswich.

Probably holed out from between 80 and 120m about 20 times.

No HIO's though!

Can't recall ever holing anything longer than a fringe putt. Most recent would have been a gutless fringe putt from at round 15m off the green (I had duffed two chips already on that hole) so it was probably in the range of 25m.

About 6 feet.

7th June 2010, 07:33 PM
About 25m is my max. One of my mates has holed out from 100 and 120, both times with bladed irons running the whole way along the ground.

HIO on 13 at Reddy Bay. Tees were forward so it was probably around 180m instead of the 200 off the back.

Wembley, Old, #17 from fairway bunker about 45m or so.

zacdullard

A 6i from about 135 meters. The best part about it was that I hit it thin and it ran along the ground the whole way.

So should we conclude it is better to hit worm burners to hole out from great distances? Seems to be a trend.

Most bizarre eagle I have ever seen.

7th June 2010, 09:35 PM
My one and only HIO was about 145m with a 7 iron. I've only done it twice from the fairway, from about 125m and about 75m. I couldn't see the bottom of the flag either time, so I didn't see them go in.

This thread shows that it doesn't happen very often for us amateurs. The pro's seem to do it all the time.

Moe Norman
7th June 2010, 09:42 PM
I'm no pro jim, and I'd estimate I've holed out from 50+ metres over 30 times in my life at a minimum.

I did on consecutive holes (11 and 12) at RQ only 2 months ago :)

WBennett

Mine was about age 14, 9 iron into a tree, dropped straight down in front of me, so with a major case of teh shits I have gone up and hit the next one without a practise swing. Never looked like missing - two bounces and rolled into the hole for birdie...

Watched a bloke hole a 2 hybrid for albatross last year from 215 out. Never looked like missing either.

So should we conclude it is better to hit worm burners to hole out from great distances? Seems to be a trend.Indeed. You have to allow for the undulations when you hit it along the ground. Hitting it in the air takes all the difficulty out of it.

My old man did that, a 200m par 3 downhill at Warragul for those that know it. Ran along the ground all the way, i guess a dry victorian winter would do that. And he didn't see it going in because he was too busy throwing clubs and swearing (so the story goes as his caddy tells it)

chipped in plenty of times a couple of years ago when i was playing often. Never dropped anything from distance though.

If you play regular chip ins just seem to happen: 4 in one round in Victoria in the summer of 2008 - ranging from 10 - 20 metres. (Was also my best ever round +1, and i missed a 7 foot putt on the 9th, my 18th, for even par, was fkn furious) Mid week comp, won $20 in the pro shop of a country course.... lol

220 Metres for 3 a 5. Pushed my drive into trees and had to chip out sideways. 3 wood landed just short and ran into the cup.

Best part was it was in a multiplier and my partner also had 3 a 5 for a 25 pointer on the last to win by 5.

My best is an 8 iron on the 9th at Carbrook from ~135m for birdie after putting my drive into the creek down the left.

At mate of mine holed out twice with a 6-iron on the same hole as a junior. He holed out from about 140m, but it nicked the power lines crossing the fairway and had to be replayed. He hit 6 iron again, narrowly missing the power lines and slam dunked it. Freaky stuff.

135 odd metres from another fairway for eagle on a par 5

200m with a 2 iron on the 15th at The Glades, the one with the elevated tee. Playing in a fourball ambrose with a few older guys and we had to use one of their drives which he nearly rolled off the tee box. Was last up to hit and it went dead straight, bounced on the front edge and it disappeared.

Should have seen the old boys jumping for joy! :)

180 odd metres with a 3 iron for a HIO at Morrisett, 170 metres for eagle at Westside(near Maitland, now closed) with a 5 iron, about 4 or 5 wedge type eagles from a 100 to 120 metres on various par 4s at various locations. one of those was at the vintage on the 14th I think.

FFS Moe, that's ridiculous. Isn't golf ironic, i have a hole in one but have only holes out between 80-120 like 2 times. A guy i played an ambrose with today had two hole in one's in his first year of golf, and he's only in the 20's in his second year.

The most bizarre one I've seen was by one of my mates. From about 25m out he thinned a sand wedge straight into the billowing flag. It dropped straight in the hole for birdie.

Allow me to add two of my own.

Used to go play the odd course with a few mates that didn't have a handicap and were 110-120 shooters. One goes into the deepest most difficult bunker at the Rocky golf club. The pin is cut right near the bunker which has a rather high wall. He's semi thinned a sand wedge at 100mph that somehow just cleared the lip, smashed the pin about 3 or 4 feet up and dropped straight down and in lmao.

In a 4 ball ambrose more recently there's a guy around 22 that helps them a bit around the course and hangs a bit. He's pretty impaired but a lovely kid. He plays a bit and is obviously a chopper but i've seen worse. Anyway he runs and catches us up halfway thru and thinks he can turn it into a 5 ball. We told him he could have a shot in a few holes time. Anyway from about 120 on hole index 1 we've hit and have about 20 feet. We tell him batter up and he promptly holes his iron. They could hear us from the clubhouse.
