Just a quick heads up for people regarding my loss of hearing recently. I am having big dramas at the moment so if I play with any of you in the coming weeks, please excuse me if you think I am ignoring you and just walking off
Some Oz golfers who I have played with recently will understand what I mean.
I am hoping this is not a permanent loss, I am booked in to see the specialist again next Thur.

What happened mate? I just went thru 3 weeks of torture myself. At the tail end of a cold my ears blocked badly. I've had massive ear troubles over the years but they've been good for years now. Anyway i went to the doc after 4 or 5 days and he gave me some special Sudafed's and one ear was syringed. This has worked in the past after a few days. After 5 days and no result he then put me on the steroid Prednisone in quite a high dose. After 5 more days or no result he said keep going and gave me more. He gave me the test with that funny steel Y diviner thing to make sure we were on the right track. He said if this course of tabs didn't help it'd be the ENT for me.

Thankfully after another 4 or so days they come good. It drove me berko on the golf course and annoyed me beyond belief at work. Hope they come good mate.

All the best Eag's hearing loss is a horrible thing. I have regular tests due to my exposure to high noise levels at the airport. So far I am looking OK for someome exposed to over 20 years exposure.

Has your balance been affected too?

Eag's, I hope it's nothing too serious or permanent.

Then again, I think a set of these would look tops on you.

Like you TNO, I have had problems all my life with my hearing. I have had a similar problem to this one before, but it only lasted three days. This time around I am heading into my 3rd week :(
The thing that really gives me the shits is this constant rumbling sound in my head, it is driving me around the bend :smt092

Nice AP , maybe I can pick up a pair cheap on Ebay

Grunt, this time around I am not having balance problems, but I did last time.

Mate of mine has just had some major surgery on both his ears.

He has to wear aides but hopefully the surgery will reduce the requirement.

Good luck Eag's!

Hang in there mate, i was thinking i'd never get decent hearing back. This only ended two weeks ago. I've had grommets about 10 times, mainly when younger but certainly into adulthood. I was pretty sure if the last dose of prednisone didn't clear me up it'd be grommets again. Is it middle ear as it was for me?

Eag's
14th May 2010, 08:33 PM
Yeah TNO, middle ear. I have had grommets a few times myself.

I'm sure there are a few OzGolfers that you might enjoy playing with more than usual at the moment.

Hope it comes good for you Eag's.

Rich - you should tee up a game with blakey before the ears come good again. Just smile and nod whenever you see his lips flappin.

Still deaf and the engine noise in my head is constant. I have an appointment with the specialist first thing Thur morning.
Hopefully he can give me some answers. Stangely enough I am getting used to hearing bugger all

As if they would accept being deaf as a valid excuse for us not listening.

Well I had my appointment with the ENT (ear, nose & throat Doc) today who sent me off to get a heap of tests done.
He seems to think it is a degenerative hearing loss which may be part of my genetic make-up.
I have been put on two types of medications, Serc & Sone, as well as aspirin for two weeks. I also have been booked in for an MRI scan and further blood tests just to cover all bases.
It looks like I will have to look into getting myself some hearing aids as soon as this current problem dissipates.
I am not really worried about the fact I may have to wear them, but the cost will be a real kick in the butt, anywhere between $2000-$6000 :(

That is quite cheap if it means a better quality of life, but it's money we had ear marked for the purchase of our next house. Anyways that is the latest so hopefully this medication will clear my head and the MRI doesn’t come back showing any abnormalities.

Ear aids aren't as gawdy as they used to be, Eag's. In saying that, I hope the MRI comes back with some benign cyst or something that they can simply cut out and be fixed!

Best wishes with it all, Eag's.

Have a word to your accountant about it, as total out-of-pocket/gap medical expenses over a threshold ($1500?) can be tax deductible. (And I hope you kept receipts of those expenses so far this fin-year.)

It is a 20% offset (rebate) for out of pocket expenses over $1500;

Ned, had my MRI scan on Tue and the results have come back all clear (thank god) the medication seems to be doing it's job, the noise in my head is slowly sub siding.
I will still have to investigate hearing aids down the track as the Doc seems to think my hearing will continue to deteriorate.
Feeling a crap load better at the moment though :)
