Speirsy,

I am a definite now ... And that's an awesome price.

I asked Gary, and he's about 66% sure at this stage, but he can let me know by tomorrow. Can I pencil him in?

Fishy,

No offence to your Mrs ... but if she's not a regular golfer, I'm wondering whether she'll actually enjoy playing Vintage. I got a tee time at the Vintage for my dad's birthday for him and his mates, and they're all "solid" 22 handicappers ... They came back after the game, having lost a handful of balls each, shaking their heads and muttering, "that course is too damn hard" ...

Jono - no offence taken, but her name is 'Anita' ;)

I've thought about this - she's actually joining Casino and getting her handicap, so if nothing else it will be a good lesson in course management. If she can't take on a tough shot, look for the bailout - something that the average 22 hacker doesn't do ;)

If worst comes to worst, we'll take the odd shortcut around major trouble, but for this price to play a pure golf course, it doesn't really matter what level golfer you are :P

My wife just picks up and drops where my ball is or on the other side of water, or whereever is convenient if she wants to. She also doesn't finish a hole if she has had enough.
Not in the rules, but it maximises her enjoyment, and that's what it is all about.

Absolutely. Just let her play the ones she wants to, and pick up when it gets to be too much.

She'll have a great time.

Too right Andy. Although we tend to wind up with a ball on the green - it's not worth playing if you're not going to at least putt-out on all of the greens - even if the ball travelled the last 150 metres by cart ;)

She'll be right Dan, Vintage is not that hard. Most holes are fairly open and the green complexes aren't too scary. She'll enjoy the scenery if nothing else.

No worries. I've got a friend who wants to play if you don't, so consider the spot filled if you are out. you have first right of refusal, but MattyD will play if you don't.

Are we set? A week out, i'm looking forward to this event. I'm going to chop it up around there, but hankering to play a top-shelf course. Went to the range with Anita today, and while she's rusty at not having had a hit for a year, she went ok.

Do we want to arrange groups before we get there?

Trung
10th April 2005, 07:06 PM
I'm really looking forward to it...

Not sure which one is on top of list..

Playing the course or playing my man Jono... Time will tell

Today I had a matchplay senario on the 9th (our 18th today)...
There were 12 of us (plenty of cash to be shared), we all knew that the best score on the front 9s was +1 so far.

In my group... there are 3 of us chasing a score to collect the cash for the front 9s

Par 4th 9th, 276m

* 18 hcper is seating on 2 up
* 19 hcper is seating on 2 up
* me on 3 up (with no shot on the last)....

I had to give both of them a shot on the last. The hole is only 276m so I knew that as least one of them will PAR the hole for a '+" and beat me on C/B. The only way is to make birdie and beat them outright :o .

After they put both there drives on the fairway. I changed my normal way of playing this hole with a 3-iron..

Took out the driver out as I have no choice but to knock it over the tree and hope it will be near the green...

* 18 hcper is on the green
* 19 hcper choked and left it short of the green

Very interesting now, I need to make birdie from the rough for a win. Knocked my ball on the green, 3m away...

* 18 hcper, 2 putted for a "+" and is now 3 up..... He could beat me on a C/B... I need a birdie :o .
* 19 hcper is goooorne :P

Line up my 3m putt and rammed it in the back of the hole for a "+" and broke my playing partners heart  . I LOVE MATCHPLAY

JONO.. I hope you read all that... I'm solid under matchplay pressure .

It should be fun ... Wouldn't call it a "grudge match" ... just "friendly competition".

BTW, you don't have long to play your first match, Fishman. We decided that end of April would be the deadline for the first round. So get in touch with ALD and organise something ... quick.

"We" decided that we would finish it a month earlier than QLD? As much as we have tried, there isn't a suitable date until May it would appear.

With ALD's illness recently, me being away last weekend, ALD away next weekend, i'm away the following weekend, we'll have to duke it out early May at best.

I don't want to referee the match. I wore my black and white striped shirt last week, so it needs a rest anyway.

The game itself is far too personal a grudge match for me to get involved with. Is there a rule about the use of foreign objects or holding onto a choke hold for more than five seconds :?:

I'm happy to referee the far more genteel fixture in the first group, where they just talk about wiping the clock and power plays :)

I'm aiming to get to the course around 9.30, allowing for a three hour journey from my house. If Sunday morning traffic is as light as it should be, I might get there earlier.

My guess is that Speirsy vs Grunt match will be much more intense. I am surprised that Grunt has agreed to play the match here as Rob has a distinct advantage.

As for my match with Trung, if you see past all the sledging, it's just an unofficial, "friendly" game ...

I wouldn't be so sure. The Vintage should be set up to keep someone like Rob honest. It will come down to risk/reward for him, whereas Grant just needs to play at or near his handicap and Rob should struggle.

Should be a ding-dong affair. As opposed to Tweedle-Dum and Tweedle-Dumber in my group

Well the match might be on but does not mean it will be a contest.
I will have to wait and see how I pull up this week. I am still very sore after the cart accident on Saturday, knee gives way occasionally & ribs are sore.

For those of you who did not read my how did you play this week thread, I was a passenger in a golf cart roll over on saturday, with the cart windscreen support bar trying to enter my chest and the cart deciding to have a lay down on my leg. Who know maybe the injuries might correct some of my swing faults (I know there are many of them) and give me the game I need to win.

Bring it on!!!!

Geez Grunt,

You're not having much luck with the carts ... First Trung runs over your putter with it, and now you get crushed by one. I think you should walk from now on ...

It sounds like you're not seriously hurt though ... It might slow down your swing a bit ...

A good question.

For moneylist purposes, the matchplayers should hole out and count up their scores, even if they concede putts to each other.

Single stableford is the most logical event, and is my vote.

I guess Spiersy will reveal all when he posts.

Jono was solid right from the start and held on for a 1-up victory. As for me, I got off to a slow start and was the hunter for most of the match. I'm happy with the result. Could have gone either way on the 17th and 18th. How ever, the better player on the day won. Congrats Jono 8).

To all and sundry - great day out. Thanks to all participants.

Rob for organising. It came together nicely. Awesome course, very technical early but opens up later. Loved it, perhaps the best designed top-shelf course i've played. And the price was right ;)

Thanks also goes to Trung and Jono for putting up with Anita and I. We had great fun out there, and it wasn't too daunting for her. Hope it didn't break the matchplay rhythm, we tried to let you putt out etc one after the other when we could.

As for scores, Rob had the card of the day, and Jim's low 30's was nothing to be ashamed of for a first outing there. I'm sure each of us will do better the next time around knowing where to miss shots.

My card was rarely touched by the pencil - after losing one in the long grass off the first tee (and following Trung's advice not to bother reloading  :P), i par'd the second after a cracking blind 6-iron and narrowly missing the birdie putt. Not much more to report on the front - more consistent on the back. I was starting to get the sh!ts by the 5th and lost focus, so just played to enjoy the day with the wife - mission accomplished.

First of all, thanks to Rob for organising the day. Some fancy footwork to get us on for almost half price.

Trung, Dan, and Anita, thanks for the company. Anita shows promise as a golfer ... she even had some sleding happening on the 7th ...

Golf in our group was sort of up and down, and none of us broke 30  but my matchplay with Trung kept us going to the very last hole. I must admit, I thought I had it wrapped up at the turn with 3 up, but Trung quickly bounced back. Trung may be ruthless with his sledging on the net, but you couldn't find a better sport on the golf course. Hit my tee shots into the trees on both 17th and 18th, and Trung found the ball for me both times. 8) Right. Enough of this butt-licking compliments. Let the sledging resume!

Just couple of amusing stories. On the 11th, both Dan and I were just off the green in two. I hit what I thought was my ball about 10 meters short of the green. Dan hit his just off the fringe at the front. Both Pro V1x's. Both number 3. The only difference was that my ball had a very faint "JO" left on it. Yep, you guessed it. We had hit each other's balls. Automatic loss of the hole for me, and 2 stroke penulty for the comp. First time it's happened to me and I was speechless.

The other story happened after the game. Few of us went wine tasting afterwards. Our last winery was place called Audrey Wilkinson ... up on a hill and fantastic views. Anyway, as we were driving out, I had obviously had too many sips of wine ... I was busy looking at the view and drove straight over a concrete barrier onto a nicely kept lawn. I screeched to a halt and backed out, leaving a monster sized tyre-divot in the lawn that would have made Tom Lehman proud. Speirsy was in the passenger seat and had a good laugh over that one. We quickly got out of there before they started chasing us. 8)

It was a long day ... but heaps of fun.

I notice Trung couldn't wait for me to do the final report of our Day At The Vintage before posting his match. However, I have their card, and I want more details of various aspects of their match. Most particularly, they were all square palying 17, and halved it with double bogeys. There must be a story attached to that.

In perfect weather on a course that Spiersy kept telling me was the easiest he'd seen it, The Vintage seems to have been a convincing winner over the OzGolfers.

The scores:

Spiersy 37
Jimandr 31
Grunt 29
Jono 29
Fishman Dan 'about 26'
Trung 25

Spiersy's mate Matt had 31, and I don't know whether Anita scored or just enjoyed the walk.

I'm sure the full story of the other big match will be posted elsewhere, but Spiersy was victorious 3 and 1.

The Vintage is a very stern test of golf, particularly severe on wayward driving and the greens are very difficult. The greens were soft and on the slow side, but the fairways were perfect.

The Vintage treats its golfers well (although most pay through the nose for the privilege). We all got there early, and enjoyed a long warm up session hitting free balls on the practice fairway. As is often the case, I hit more good shots there than on the course.

In our group there were a number of highlights. Spiersy proved again he is a much better golfer than his scandalous 5 h'cap, getting 37 on a hard course without playing particularly well. Grunt showed why he is a dangerous 23 by hitting a lot of good shots, particularly with his iron approaches, then choking with the driver when victory was in sight. I played well early, then lost my swing path with the driver (again), and only got a remotely acceptable score through some great recovery shots and good short putting. I must have had 6 or 7 putts from 60 feet or more, and got most of them to about 6 feet then holed the next one.

The highlight for me was Grunt's thinned bunker shot on 4 that hit the flag (not the stick, the actual flag) which had fortunately caught a wind gust at exactly the right moment. This stopped the ball going into a bunker so deep it needs abseiling equipment.

The other extraordinary stroke was by Rob's mate Matt on 11. This hole has a hazard at the edge of the green. Matt's ball was in the hazard but semi-playable, or so he thought. One unsuccessful hack later, he was still in the hazard, and the shot required more force. It got so much force that the ball flew the green, and the muddy divot covered half the green. The mud also covered him, which served him right.

I really enjoyed my day.

Thanks to Spiersy for organising the day and negotiating a big saving on the standard green fee. Those who didn't go missed a lot.

Yeah, there was, but they wound up atleast 2 holes in front  is that because you lost your pencil on the first hole

My card was rarely touched by the pencil - after losing one in the long grass off the first tee

We had hit each other's balls

You were first to play your chip

My first thoughts were that i was a little stunned i was on the fringe, the other ball was 3-4 metres behind? It was only after Jono had putted out and i was cleaning my ball that i saw the faint 'JO'.

First time that's happened to me. Poor timing for it to happen to you ;)

I'm glad to hear everyone seemed to enjoy themselves, even though the scores weren't exactly great. We couldn't have had better weather and the price was right.

Thanks to Grant for a great match, taking it all the way to the 17th. He took 4 straight holes from me from 9-12 and had me one down......and admittedly a little nervous that I was about to be ousted in round #1  ......Matty really enjoyed meeting everyone and getting in a game at The Vintage, and I'm sure he'll be up for future OzGolf days....

Looking forward to the next trip up to play Cypress, and to the next round against the winner of the Dan/ALD match.....

I had 5-iron into a par 5 17th (playing about 164m). I wanted to hit it long as short of the green was a water hazard and thick scrubs. Pulled it slightly left into the left bunker.

I had a down hill lie in the bunker back down the green to the flag. Hit it on the green but too long and stop about 3m off the front of the green. Chip back on and 2 putts for an easy 5.

Jono....not sure what Jono took from the tee. He pushed right in the bushes. Duffed one chip, duffed another chip, on the green and sunk the putt, another easy 5.

Well what can I say, I played Greg's Course & played like Greg snatching defeat from the jaws of victory

Was a scratchy round with moments of brilliance mixed with brain explosions.

Lots of +'s for me
Did not get beat 10 & 8
Pushed Rob pretty hard (well I thought so anyway, he may not)
Actually got to lead for a hole
Some of my recovery shots

-'s
the run home from 14

Thanks Rob, Jim & Matt for the game

I tried my best and it just was not good enough, maybe next year.

... I want more details of various aspects of their match. Most particularly, they were all square palying 17, and halved it with double bogeys. There must be a story attached to that.

You want details? Hey you asked for it ...

17th. 165 meter par three. Trung hits first, make good contact but pulls it a fraction with a slight draw. Left pot. I go next. I am thinking, there's plenty of space to the right ... I should aim slightly right of the green and maybe I'll get a slight draw. If not, I'll have a simple chip onto the green. Good in theory but I tensed up and blocked it out right into the trees. Chip out barely made it out of the trees and chipped again onto the green and 2 putted. Trung in the mean time hit his bunker shot slightly thin, over the flag, and one bounce off the green. Chip on and 2 putts. Pretty ordinary stuff I know, but when you are playing matchplay and all square with 2 to play, even 3 footers become tough.

18th. I'm in the back bunker for two and Trung is just off the green to the right. I had about 5 meters of green to work with. Downhill. Bit of a crowd gathering around the green (ie. the group in front  ). I managed to pop the ball out just onto the green and it ran towards the hole. It just caught the left lip and spun out to the right about 3 feet past. Trungs chip went past the hole about 4 feet. Trung just missed his putt left (it looked like it was going to be left to right but stayed dead straight) and being on a similar line, I learned from it and holed it for the 1 up win. There. How's that for details?

Played Concord in the wind with a new driver....Not a great day....Then played the Avondale medal the day after my 30th birthday :? ....BIG trouble that day.....Hung over as a mule and no idea where it's going. Add that to the fact it was a Vardon event so the greens were running 12 on the stimp with crazy pins, and you have a smooth 169 for 2 rounds.....

Ugh.....

Or when you eagle a hole and write down 6, like I did at New Brighton 3 a 6 was a highlight of the day for me the last time I played there.
