View Full Version : Stuff to do in Melbourne?

I'm in Melbourne for a week with nothing on the agenda and no golf clubs. :(
The trip was an offer that was too good to refuse but I just didn't have the budget to turn it into a full on golfing holiday.

So what is there for a single (not so young) bloke to do to fill in time and get a "taste" of Melbourne?

I was thinking of catching the tram up to Albert Park and hiring a set of clubs so that I didn't have to go a whole week without a hit. So what else is there to do?

TIA.

Hire a car and go somewhere interesting. A day driving up and down the Great Ocean Road and stopping at the odd beach spot would beat anything actually in Melbourne for mine, but I don't really see cities as tourist destinations so I'm not a good trip planner.

If you are in the city there are lots of places to walk around and see plus:
- Catch the circle tram to see the city for free
- Watch a game of AFL
- Melbourne International Comedy Festival is on now
- Ocean Road is good, especially if you hire/borrow a set of clubs, some nice courses around there

Lygon Street.

Only if you like shit food and wankers driving up and down in hotted up Hyundais.

Melbourne is way better than Lygon St if you like food and a drink. Happy to help on a PM, not this weekend, I am down there for Pies/Saints and Masters weekend on the Mornington.

Book some seats in reception of a Dandenong motor trimmer and watch the wacky customers.

If anyone asks, tell them you are waiting for Andrew.

Seriously, what's not to do in Melbourne!!! There's always something goin on there, my 2nd favourite city in Aus.

Tour the Brewery,
Watch an AFL game
Have a good walk/drive around the city
Markets
Casino at night + clubs (If your into that)
Great Ocean Road is an awesome drive, especially if you hire something fun to drive ;).....take it all the way to Port Fairy, I've heard there's a very nice course there.
Visit Geelong
Etc......

best thing to do in Melbourne is find the GPO, its always the centre of town. Now start walking in a straight line, dont stop for at least a couple of days.
You wont regret it, unless you luck out and cant swim well.

Golfnut, you are clearly confused. Geelong and Port Fairy are not in Melbourne and the GOR doesn't go to Port Fairy.

Thanks fellas. some good ideas there. I got into Melbourne today and am here for a week. I'm staying in St Kilda. I am going to the footy on saturday at Etihad and later at the MCG then thinking about going to see Ross Noble down the road at the Palais.

Surely Flowergirl would be hospitable if you can get down to Rosebud.
Catch the train up to Ballarat and go to Sovereign Hill and the Gold Museum.

I second Bar 20. Men's gallery is also good for art.

If you are going to the G, the full experience sees you start at the Royal Hotel on Punt Road and walk up to the ground half an hour before.

There are blockbusters all weekend in the footy starting with the game on now. I'm angling for a trip down at the start of May - hopefully I can catch a couple of rounds and 2 (perhaps 3) games of footy.
