View Full Version : What is a good blade putter?

Guys,

I have been thinking about trying out some blade putters and would like to know your opinions on what are regarded as "good" brands / putters.

Is it the same old brands (Scotty, Ping, Bettinardi) or are there others worth looking at?

The classic Wilson 8802 never goes out of style.

Doesn't Phil use an Odyssey blade?

+1

I have had one of these for years and absolutely love it for longs putts. Floors anything else. Unfortunately it doesn't suit my style for the 3 footers and I lose confidence real quickly.....

Odyssey number 9 for Phil whenever I have watched him.

I reckon they look nice and would like to get one to try sometime soon.

I gamed a Callie-F before I got my Scotty...nice compact Anser style head and had a very nice feel to it. Definitely try one of the Yes! blade putters if you can find them.

The following all make excellent blade putters.
Bettinadi (Ben Hogan & Mizuno), Nike, Odyssey, Ping, Rife, TaylorMade, Scotty Cameron,Wilson, Yes, Miura, Seemore, Never Compromise and locally Kari Lajosi.

Have a Scotty bullseye flange that Kari is refinishing and a Titleist SC John Reuters bullseye. Both are nice.

The Wilson 8802 are great if you can find them. There is also a Callaway blade that ces with a hickory shaft that a friend of mine has. That is sweet!

Some of those in previous posts aren't considered blades eg Anser style.
A bit like comparing a hybrid to an iron.

I've known both to be called a blade. Maybe the L shaped ones are 'classic blades'?

Didn't know they were hard to find. I have a brand new one sitting in my garage won in a comp about 10 years ago.

Heel-Toe Weighted (or Heel-Toe) is generally used to describe Anser-like putters.
Mallet for anything with a bit of bulk behind it.

Except for the marketing dept. at Odyssey, that describes a couple of their 2-ball models as a blade. :smt093

Hi Dotty, my other putters are face balanced, but heel-toe balanced? Isn't that a dichotomy? I have heard people talking about the angle the toe hangs at. But what exactly is heel-toe balanced?

I know I am showing my ignorance here, but if I don't ask I will have to google it :smt087

I use a Yes Sophia, which is just like an 8802 except with a shiny insert. :) It goes beautifully on long putts and works equally well on the short ones.

Expect to pay 250 for a brand new one though.

TP Mills has designed some great blade putters for different companies. The Spalding TPM series are great oldschool putters. The TPM 3 i have is very simple but works well. More recently he has done putters for mizuno. Cameron circa 62 #1 is a good blade putter with a heavier head than some.

I love a classic blade putter. My recommendation would be a Spalding TPM 7 which is the favourite of my collection. Unusually for a classic blade, its sweetspot is in the centre of the head and it is slightly heavier than most blades (which are usually light). Softest butttery feel on it as well. They come up on US ebay every couple of weeks and go very cheap.

Yeah, that's most of my classic blades. I'm refinishing a few at the moment (hence the shaftless models) and I'm sure there's a couple others floating around somewhere... I have far too many putters.

Anyone know what to use to coat brass pautters to stop them from tarnishing? There was originally a coating on it, but I stripped it as mist had already been removed.

Great looking collection. I will have a look for a Spalding. I tried out a Wilson 8882 the other day and it felt pretty good, but I need to use one in anger to really tell how it will go.

oldmannoodles
6th April 2010, 07:05 PM
Ian, the Wilson 8802 and 8813 are great blades but the sweetspot is tiny and about a centimetre towards the heel.

The TPM 7 has a larger sweetspot which is perfectly centred and feels even better than all the 8802 models I've tried (must say that I haven't hit an original 1960s version yet - too pricey for me). The TPM is also a bit heavier than the light Wilsons. They go on US ebay at around $20-40 and can be easily and cheaply refinished to look new.

No-one's mentioned the Ping Tess yet either - a fine classic blade.

IanO
6th April 2010, 08:48 PM
Do you know what the difference is between the TPM 3 and the TPM7 as there seems to be more TPM 3's around at the moment?

oldmannoodles
7th April 2010, 10:42 AM
The TPM 3 is not a "classic blade" - the neck sits a few centimetres from the heel. I've owned a few TPM 3s - great putters. With all these TPM models, there is an amount of luck involved in the way they feel as different 'runs' used slightly different materials - some stainless, some carbon, some a mix.

These are sweet putters,I have the Siena 4-02 and Modena 4-02 models but plan to collect all 6.

April 2, 2004 - TaylorMade is extending its Rossa brand of putters with the introduction of the Rossa TP (for Tour Preferred) line.
"The Rossa TP putter line is the product of a collaboration between Rossa putter engineers and a variety of tour professionals that resulted in the fine-tuning of six existing Rossa putter models," TaylorMade's announcement read. "This fine-tuning includes subtle changes and refinements that succeed in making the Rossa TP line of putters look, feel and perform in ways that tour pros prefer."
The Rossa TP putter line will be issued in limited quantities and includes two mallets, the Maranello 8-01 and Maranello 8-02; and four blades, the Daytona 1-02, Siena 4-02, Modena 4-02 and Imola 6-02.
Rossa TP putters are constructed of 1020 carbon steel and are 100 percent precision-milled. The Rossa TP Blades feature a tungsten weight sole insert allowing for exact CG placements and improved overall head shape. The new Rossa TP putter models are derivatives of the former Rossa Tour putters with slightly different dimensions.

The manufacturer's suggested retail price for each Rossa TP putter is $300.
