Last night, Robyn installed Tapatalk (http://www.tapatalk.com) which improves access to the forum for mobile devices such as iPhone, BlackBerry, Android and Nokia devices.

This installation is a little different to most mods we add to the forum in that it seems more professional and well supported, and so it should be if the end user (yourself) has to pay for the application.

A few members have already been using it without any major issues, so I thought I would make an announcement about it to let others know.

To get access to the forum via these devices, follow the instructions (http://www.tapatalk.com/en/mobile) on the Tapatalk website.

If this solution isn't suitable for you, please let us know and we will look into other options.

Not overly enamoured with the Tapatalk thing. Read only is fine, but the content is more rich in Safari and easier to manipulate - and much more familiar. I'm not a fan of it spamming me with notices that the website is Tapatalk enabled either.

It does, but it's quite unlikely. I've jailbroken several phones on many different iterations of the OS, and only bricked it once. Even then, I just restored the software through iTunes and it was back to normal.

Is it heaps easier/better to view ozgolf with tapatalk?

Since my laptop died a horrible death the other week I do almost all my browsing of ozgolf, from home, on the iphone. I dont really have a problem with it in safari though so is it worth running tapatalk?

AndyP

Our server host stopped the script that allows Tapatalk to run, as there was too much server load (on a shared server with other sites). I haven't had time to look into it yet, but unless there is some upgrade to Tapatalk that we haven't already installed, it could be out for an indefinite period.

AndyP

I have started a bug report with Tapatalk. I get the feeling it might take a little while because of communicating with the server host and the Tapatalk developers who would be in the U.S, I assume.

I know how many users there are because Tapatalk provides analytics to us. 30 or less users, 200+ sessions per day.

not much you can do about that except to change servers. The host simply has to put limits on certain processes otherwise all other sites become degraded. I think on ours we have been busted with email sending and something to do with what the sql database does, but the host just unblocked us immediately and we manage our stuff to not encroach on the limits anymore.

I need info or a link or something...

We have servers standing by to take your call. Seriously - I have 4 servers, 3 VPS and a couple of Apache boxes sitting on Gigabit ethernet just waiting to be used.

AndyP
12th February 2011, 06:41 PM
Thanks for your offer so far, Virge. Changing servers is a pretty big deal and would involve some downtime as well. It's not the first option to solve this, so at this stage we are giving Tapatalk the opportunity to resolve the issue.

henno
13th February 2011, 05:23 PM
Done right it should result in little to no downtime. The only hurdle is the changeover while DNS propagates, but even then a simple redirect to new.ozgolf.net or something would fix that.

Just sayin'.

I had a brainstorm about a remotely hosted tapatalk script that I could host on my server that could talk to the ozgolf mysql server via an SSH tunnel. But the latency would be a killer, so I gave up on the idea and grabbed a beer instead.

What about on Virge's Super Servers?

I'll have you know that my server is super dooper. The latency is a network issue, nothing more. If the servers were hosted in the same rack (or even datacentre) with a decent connection it'd be alright. But they're not. So it isn't.

I haven't done much about it. It's not high in priority to be honest.

Your not suggesting to us that you are wanting to give up or stand down from your admin position to make way for someone who is a motivated go getter? Or have I read between the lines incorrectly?

Surely if you no longer give a rats about this issue you wouldn't stand in the way of another capable person from looking into it.

How much is it to convert V-Bulletin to a mobile site natively?Do you mean different forum software that has it's own mobile functionality? I know that IP Bulletin Board does, as I use it on my running forum. That would have to be a couple of hundred dollars to get a license, I would think, and it would be painful to convert.

If anything, the few hundred dollars would be better spent on beefing up the server to simply handle the tapatalk script.

Guys,

Before we go all ISG Admin on this - lets slow down a bit.

Andy and Goughy, we all appreciate the work you do. But lose the arrogant "**** off - I am going to dreamworld" and "Not the apocolypse", "you have no idea whats going on" bullshit. You honestly cant expect users to ignore this kind of response. This is what pisses people off and probably is the reason we all left ISG all those years ago. ("PM's aren't used by 90% of the users"... "other things are happening" . . . "not important", ring a bell anyone ???)

I am sure there is a good reason for it not working - but the reason everyone is giving you are hard time is because they think either they can fix it, you could fix it if you would get off your arse, or some cash would fix it.

Throw the whingers a bone - point them to the problem, let them hassle the software developers as well as you. I am sure 20 complaints is better than one bloke.

Either way - give them description of the problem - and then let them go into bat for you. If they find a solution - Great - if they don't, who cares, it wasn't you wasting time chasing dead end leads.

Can we please make the problem the problem - not the admins the problem as the last 3 pages have pretty much been.
