View Full Version : Horizontal vs Vertical

AndyP

As you can see, I've just changed the layout style of the forum to the default horizontal layout. I'm interested in knowing what you think and whether the vertical column layout is definitely preferred. I'll leave it like this for a little bit.

I think the horizontal version is a shocker. Not a big fan of the spread on the other version either (the big gap between a short post and a signature).

Just my 2c

I thought something was wrong with my computer. I much prefer the vertical style.

Change is good, but personally I like the look and setout of 'vertical'.

Like Zac mentioned, I thought something was wrong and was blaming the kids for 'button pushing'

I expected answers after members looked at more than two threads with the layout.

Yossarian

Andy I though my computer was broken, then I saw this thread. I don't really like it. Some say change is as good as a holiday, in this case the destination is somewhere like Queensland or Shep. A bad holiday.

The WAnkers posting has increased since the change to horizontal. That is reason enough to change it back.

What changed? I cant see any difference.

AndyP
11th March 2010, 05:13 PM
I would also ask how you feel about it andy?I'm not really a fan, but I've seen it at other forums. I think it disrupts the flow of reading a thread, as does overly large signatures.

You must have a 6x4 monitor.:roll: If you can not see it Blakey you have a perception problem :wink:

There is now an extra 2 inches of space above all posts..... beside the avatars and names which used to appear on the side = less scrolling as above

Yes and no. The Avatar etc have moved to the top, but there was a big space in the body of the post before (the length of the Poster details, Avatar etc). My perception is it has just moved to the top, but the overall post window length is basically the same.

Aha, now that you have described it, I now see and remember the difference.

The old way was totally stupid that a one line post took up the same amount of space as a 10 line post.;

What have you done Andy? Can't access the forums, only new posts and today's posts working?.

henno
11th March 2010, 07:13 PM
My perception is it has just moved to the top, but the overall post window length is basically the same.

Exactly right. There is no extra whitespace, it's now just one avatar's depth. The vertical way had one avatar's depth plus one "Join Date/Location/Posts" depth as well.

11th March 2010, 07:22 PM
Except that the big light blue space now breaks up the flow of the conversation.

henno
11th March 2010, 07:26 PM
As opposed to the big white space that was twice the size of the big blue space.

just
11th March 2010, 07:33 PM
Way to go with the exaggeration, but at least it was white, so non disruptive. If we keep this format at least limit sig size (hint we have a WITB forum).

What's changed ?

henno
11th March 2010, 07:38 PM
If you typed a one-line post, I honestly think it would be twice the size or at least very, very close.

I don't care either way. My monitor is too bloody big (1920x1080) so there's empty space everywhere.

solve the problem by disabling avatars and signatures.

Yossarian

Henno you really need to change the colour the branding in your signature. It is so passé.

Yossarian
11th March 2010, 07:43 PM
I could get used to it. Could we flip the avatars over to the right side and the sigs to the top though?

I slightly favour the vertical, if the 'sea of white' above a quoted reply can be reduced.

I'm assuming that the ten lines of whitespace in your signature are there for the sake of irony? :)

Andy
The great bulk of forums I visit use the vertical style, and while I know that's not a justification in itself, I think it shows that most people actually prefer it. If you want to persist with this, then I think you its better if you further restrict avatar size and sig size.

Well there you go, not my fault ..... i removed my signature altogether and the gap is still there ???

AndyP
12th March 2010, 08:47 AM
Yeah, no idea why i have that much room there :-kIt's probably the amount of times that you have pushed enter in your signature that has done it, plus you've got font size code in there twice.

henno
12th March 2010, 08:48 AM
Well there you go, not my fault ..... i removed my signature altogether and the gap is still there ???

This is why:

<font size="1"><br />
<br />
</font><br />
<br />
<br />
<font size="1"> <br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
</font>

You have a heap of breaks and font styles with no content. Make sure you're not in WYSIWYG mode in your editor, and ensure there are no [font] tags or anything in there.

EDIT: nevermind, AndyP to the rescue.

Bruce
12th March 2010, 10:08 AM
I'm not enamored with the layout as it has lengthened the page significantly. There are very few posts that are longer than the naming block that was on the left and as such the individual post size was no bigger than that. Now every post is that size plus the actual text. So every "+1" post is the name block plus one line.

henno
12th March 2010, 10:14 AM
I'm not sure I understand, Bruce. Now that it's back to how it was (vertical), the space under your post there is easily larger than the space used by the depth of an avatar in "horizontal" mode.

I think name + rank + avatar is larger than the white space.
