View Full Version : OZgolf 2005 Most Improved Golfer - Courty

Here's an update on how people are going so far.  The year looked at for improvement is from Champs (01/11/04) to Champs (27/11/05).

http://img14.imgspot.com/u/05/72/19/OZgolfHandicaps1.jpg

Seems to be a few of the same names up the top of the list as there was last year.  But look out for Trung when he confirms his details.
Of course there is plenty of time for the rest of us to improve, and plenty of time for those at the top to slip.

The following are unconfirmed, as I could either not find golflink details, or find accurate handicap details at the listed dates.  If you could provide these details to me (or even better your golflink number if you have one), you can be promoted to the above list.

http://img14.imgspot.com/u/05/72/19/OZgolfHandicaps2.jpg

Also if I have missed someone, let me know.

Last year's thread is at: http://ozgolf.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=987&start=0

They are images from ImageSpot.
I can see them, amanda and Fishy must be able to see them too.

I need confirmation of your exact handicap at 1/11/04, and now.
I have it as 9 (from Champs, but not exact) and 6.1 respectively.

I can see the images.

AP - you got a calender? Do something for me?

Flip over a few more pages. In fact, count them off. I think you'll find there are 9 more pages (and 9 more pretty pics) after the one you are currently looking at.

Some maths for us all.

Here is a senario.. 8)

Player No. (1)* started at Hcp 27.0 and then got to Hcp 21.4 at the end of the year. (Lost of 6 shots)
Player No. (2)* started at Hcp 18.1 and then got to Hcp 12.5 at the end of the year. (Lost of 5 shots)
Player No. (3)* started at Hcp 13.4 and then got to Hcp 9.6 at the end of the year (Lost of 3 shots)
Player No. (4)* started at Hcp 6.4 and then got to Hcp 3.5 at the end of the year (Lost of 2 shots)

Who is the overall winner? :smt017 #-o

Here is how I would calculate it..

(0.4 every shot) Hcp 19.5+
(0.3 every shot) Hcp 12.5 -> 19.4
(0.2 every shot) Hcp 4.5 -> 12.4
(0.1 every shot) Hcp less than 4.5

Player No. (1)* (27.0-21.4) / (0.4) = 14 shots under for the year
Player No. (2)* (18.1-12.5) / (0.3) = 18.67 shots under for the year
Player No. (3)* [(13.4-12.5) / (0.3)] + [(12.5-9.6) / (0.2)] = 17.5 shots under for the year
Player No. (4)* [(6.4-4.5) / (0.2)] + [(4.5-3.5) / (0.1)] = 19.5 shots under for the year

Winner is "Player No. (4)" due to the fact that he is the most under par. (even though he lost only 2 shots) :smt098

Trung Ranking
#1 Player 4, 19.5 shots under
#2 Player 2, 18.67 shots
#3 Player 3, 17.5 shots
#4 Player 1, 14 shots

Using method in first post.
#1 Player 4, 45.3% improvement of h/cap
#2 Player 2, 30.9%
#3 Player 3, 28.4%
#4 Player 1, 20.7%

Both methods give the same result.
Did I miss your point?
You would be ranked first above, if 9.0 was your h/cap in Nov.

This is a good start but players should be able to claim additional improvement credits.

For example - a long driver who provides assistance to another player during a range session should be able to claim a hcp improvement credit of up to 1 shot for doubling the driving distance of the player mentored. This is to reflect the increase in the greater hcp improvement economy that such mentoring provides. eg. ALD shows me how to hit the ball 50% longer and he gets a 0.5 hcp increase credit.

Conversely, Ho's get frequent honeymoon benefits from equipment changes that impact hcp improvment rating. Hcp improvements that result from bag changes cannot be immediately realised. Once the item has remained in play for 6 months, then any deferred hcp improvment points can be taken in full or held over to offset a future purchase. Players will be required to submit a monthly BAS (Bag Activity Statement) to ensure compliance.

These additions will result in a stronger hcp improvment for OzGolfers as a whole.

Not really an irregularity... Consistency is the key. I've managed to play slightly crap golf in a lot of events. I've been shooting 3-4 worse than my hcap in most events, which is usually good enough for a top-half of the field finish. I think I actually took second place at Lakelands with 32 points for goodness sakes.... Eventually I will drift out to about a 9-10 hcap, at which point I could give this POTY title a shake.

It's going to be hard getting that h/cap out if you're not playing much golf over the next few months or is this more a very long term goal. Do you need someone to just hand in cards for you, along with the comp fees? ;)

ok that URL resolves to the same IP as my PC , so its not a DNS problem.

what is the HTTP error you get when you try to open that URL.

Something is blocking HTTP traffic from that domain to your PC. Any kind of security software on you PC could do that, or it could be at your ISP.

I would suggest you ring or email them and ask if they can access that same URL using the same network connection as you do, or find another person using the same ISP to do the test.

This presents me with a dilemma.

I am putting in my cards for my first official handicap and I might end up starting at less than 27.

Should I dog my last 3 cards to make sure I start at the max and give myself maximum improvement opportunity? Would that be wrong?

Yes it would be wrong Bruce - cos you might then win the most improved player and that trophy has my name written on it!!!!!!!!!

And you just wait Mr Kev......at least I don't play off 10 and off the yellows!! ( yea I know - I play off the reds!!!)

Bruce,

It's not improvement by most shots but percentages, therefore the higher the handicap the greater number of shots that you have to drop to get a higher percentage decrease.

If you look at Trung, he has only (big word when already in single figures)dropped 3.1 strokes for a 34% decrease. If you were to drop 3.1 from 27 then that would only be an 11.5% decrease. For you to match Trungie you will have to drop 9 strokes which off 27 means bettering your handicap by 23.

Play for the lowest you can get then the improvement needed isn't so great. IMHO of course.

I see where you're coming from, and tend to agree. But as a 26 handicapper i knew that my handicap would come down rapidly once i got used to playing regularly etc.

It's harder to lose 3 strokes from 8 then losing 10 from the high 20's - especially when you're slicing off .4 per shot under handicap.

For mine - a low handicap going lower beats a high marker making big inroads, and it's more than putting numbers into a spreadsheet and declaring the biggest number great than 0 being the winner. You should also factor in handicaps, ACR's on the home courses, CCR's on the days played....

Bruce

Trung's effort is awesome.

But anecdotally I think that people's hcps approach a point asymptotically and then hover around there until something changes. The trick is riding that curve to it's likely end.

To match Trung would require going from 27 to 18. Or 25 to 16.5. Which of the two numbers is the most likely end result?

Where you start is equally important to where you finish.

AP,
my new hcp is 6.3...

My 37 points last week didn't do anything as the CCR was only 71  .
Also had a game on Tuesday with Marcel. .

Thanks,

Well, at least I probably won't have to worry about coming last in this category. I've had 1 comp game since the date of the champs and may be able to squeeze another one in before the 2005 champs.

Trung's effort is awesome

And it couldn't happen to a nicer guy either....

So Trung, when's my next invite to Carny :?:

I will find a spot this month for you... Are weekdays good for you?

Will PM if I can find something, spots are limited as the major pennants are on Sundays around this time of the year.

I didn't think anyone cared enough for it to be updated weekly.

I can tell you that you are no longer the least improved golfer, and Kev has now taken over the lead from Trung as most improved.
I believe present or future North Queenslanders hold 3 of the top 4 spots.

Well I'll let you know that I am interested and whether it is bragging or not I am going to brag about this being the only category that I am in the top 10.

as I don't get the chance to play enough events to win the POTY title, I will just have to continue improving for the next 6 months to have a shot at the title.

I only have to lose another 4.5 shots (like that will happen) to take top spot.

I'm still in the running for the matchplay (easy to say when haven't played a match yet) so at the moment in the running for 2 titles.

It doesn't really matter, drunko.
The result of these methods does not necessarily determine who is awarded the most improved golfer, as Blakey has discussed before.
Jono would actually have less chance with his method, as he felt it disadvantaged those with higher handicaps.

It's just a snapshot of how we are all going.

Slowly going backwards

Am trying my hardest to stop the slow bleed but nothing is working, just cant play 18 holes at the moment. Really inconsistent at the moment, 5 holes off about 10, followed by a couple off 3 then a consistent few holes off 18 with a couple of blowout holes off 50+ to totally stuff the round up and finish with between 36 & 25 points depending on the capitulation.

So how many recorded rounds do we each have on Golflink? I've got 21 since 1/11/04 to now. So given I've dropped by 2.3 in that time, that would translate to an average of about 0.1 hcp improvement per round (supposedly). Helps that 1.2 came off the first week in November though!

Can I ask for a ruling?
Which method are we going to use for this? It would be a real bummer that going off one calculation I win but the other I don't. If Jono's calculations are not being used, delete them.
I don't want to know that I could have been the most improved if the calculations were different to what was set earlier in the year.
As much as it would be good to be #1 improver we have to have the same rules all year and not change them half way through the year. If everyone agrees that jono's method is better start it next next year. If not so be it.

markTHEblake
14th November 2005, 08:07 PM
excuse me anyone if I have spoken out of turn. dont want to upset anybody.

Grunt, last year we did not use any of the methods shown above to decide the winner, although we used method #1 as a rough guide to identify the main contenders, and then we voted on a winner.

I cant remember if the winner was the golfer with the best improved percentage or not.  But Mandy had improved in so many other areas as well, like golf knowledge, number of drivers purchased, rules - heck she was even on the committee at her club.  How could anyone beat that?

Andyp has taken all this on board this year himself and he hasnt actually said how the winner will be decided (i think).

So dont worry about getting hungup on Andyp's method or Jono's method cos neither may indicate who really wins.

Personally, if I was asked i would be voting for someone who is not number 1 in either ranking method, thats nothing against you or trung but i beleive there is someone out there that has improved much much more.

I'll give you an example why the Methods above are not conclusive enough. Now if I started this year at 6.3 (my peak handicap this year) and finished it at 3.5 (my lowest handicap ever) and consider my average handicap for the last 15 years or so is about 4.5,  would you say that my 44% handicap improvment this year is deserving of "Most Improved"?

In that example I'd certainly be embarrassed to win the thing if it was presented to me over what some of you blokes have done this year.

Stats are meaningfull but they are not conclusive!

Grunt
14th November 2005, 08:21 PM
Ok, I now know. I thought it was a purely stat thing. Best of luck to who ever gets it then. I know if i reach my goal of 18 by the end of the year I have had a good year.

I just checked the Event Calendar (http://www.cairnsgolfclub.com.au/memberscalendar.html). It appears I was mistaken. There is only 1 4BBB round (tomorrow) and 2 individual stableford events.
I also noticed that the round on Nov 26 is the final of the Qantas Stableford event. They get your best 4 stableford scores from the nominated Qantas round each month, and the winner at the end of the year gets return airfares to Brisbane I think. I'm currently 2pts behind the leader in equal 4th place.

The stat is not accurate on who is the most improved, but gives us an idea on who has improved significantly. So now we can run the poll on just a few people.

There's still one thing left to award this year, and it's the Most Improved.

Here are the top 5 as far as the stats go, and I wouldn't think that any others are worth considering for the award.

http://img305.imageshack.us/img305/7590/improvement3um.jpg

Alright people, start posting your thoughts on who should win this year's most improved, remembering that the stats don't tell the whole story. For example, you may take into consideration the way they went about their improvement, or they may have continued on from previous improvement, or they may have only got back to an old handicap and shouldn't be considered.

Jarro
30th November 2005, 01:29 PM

BrisVegas

All these ozgolfers deserve praise for improving their games dramatically this past year. As someone who's handicap has drifted the other way, I'm envious of your dedication and achievements.

I think Courty deserves to win as he has halved his already pretty decent hcap from 10 to 5.

That's not to diminish the achievements of the others. Shazza has payed great golf this year (despite playing with Pete!  ) and has dropped an amazing 6 shots. I can't see her improvement slowing down much. I'd back her to drop that many again this year.

Grunt I haven't met, but the sydney guys are raving about how well you're playing. Keep it up mate.

Trung and gazgolf1 were already good golfers and have done very well to shave 3 & 2 strokes respectively.

Congratulations all of you. 8)

30th November 2005, 01:54 PM
I second what Vegas said.  All the above mentioned players have done very well.  Courty should probably get the award this year, but there's really nothing separating the 5.  8)

Two players I've played with a few times, Trung and Grunt, have definitely stepped up a gear since last year. Trung was a shaky 9 marker last year who relied on his good putting to save his rounds, but now he is a solid low marker who has control over all his shots. Very impressive driving/iron play in recent times. Grunt is in his rapid improvement phase, and I was most impressed with the way he managed his game last Friday in the rain.

Well done to all the mentioned players whoever ends up winning the title.

markTHEblake
30th November 2005, 10:36 PM
Courty is a shoe in regardless of the stats, becuase of the handicap he started the year on.

Unlike someone who has been stagnant on a handicap for a long time its easy for them to start improving again (hint get a lesson), but its much harder for someone to improve from a handicap they have just improved to because it obviously gets exponentially harder to reduce a handicap as you get lower.

Courty started the year on 8, but he only just got to 8, So even if he was 2nd or 3rd on the ladder, he gets my vote!

Trung

My vote is for Courty. We had a scoring race and Courty won in the final minute. Brilliant stuff :D .

As for me, I'm happy with my current progress. My on-going goal is to give Jono 3 shots every I step on the tee with Jono.. Now I'm giving him 4 shots. Pfffffffffff....

My lowlight of the year was when I knew I needed a par or bogey on the 18th to get down to 4. I double bogeyed it. Talk about choking under pressure  .

Ok I'm going to vote SHAZZA

You could have guessed it  , but there is a reason. She did not play any golf from March to July and only a little before and after that with the wrist operation she had. so to come back from that lay off and the nature of the layoff (hard to play golf without a wrist) it is amazing to me she has dropped 6 shots in the last couple of months.

Unfortunately, I didn't play like Tiger when I christened the hat today. I will get a pic done when I get my camera back (my sister-in-law is borrowing it until her new one arrives).

The medal is going straight to the pool room.

I thought it was a pretty spiffy hat too.

So....where's that pic?
