Wedge sets matching or not?

I've got a mixed set (Callaway PW, TM 52, Bridgey WC Design 56 and a Yes 60 ) and I hit them all well, but does it pay to have a matched set for feel. There is no basis for the mongrel set it is just how it has panned out.

I've only recently got the Callaway V Forged 48 PW and I have to tell you it is a treat to hit and I can put some serious action on ball with out cutting it to pieces, the TM gap wedge has helped me out of lots trouble but of the set it's probably the most vulerable. The Bridgey WCD 56 and the Yes lobby are performing well.

Thoughts?

As long as they work, who cares.

Mine match, but the bounces/grinds are different anyway. In my case, as long as the swingweight, length and overall weight was the same (or near enough) then that'd be good enough for me.

I'm with Henno on this .. I have 4 ( soon 5 ) different wedges and I think it is horses for courses and use whichever wedge has the right bounce for the type of course i will be playing. (I always take my Cally x-forged 60* everywhere)

Im glad you are enjoying the 48;)

Matched sets look better in the bag, but thats a personal thing. as long as they are matched in SW and you are happy with them. thats the main thing

Does matching wedges = the same brand and model, same shafts, same grips, different lofts & bounces, same MOI: or something else?

Wedges don't come in most sets for a reason, that being, there is so much personal preference. Sounds like you have the feel for each one worked out. Enjoy them.

I have 3 vokeys, all the same shaft and grip. Swing weights differ obviously but for me I think I would find it hard to look at 3 different sorts of wedges.

Why would you go out of your way to make life harder than it needs to be?

Same type of wedge, shaft length, type, flex, grip etc. Only variance is loft/bounce.

Well there is my opinion. You don't go out of your way to use different brands in the rest of your irons so why do it with your wedges?

Fair point SMS and I agree with the logic

Only variance is loft/bounce.

So SMS you wouldn't get, say, a non-spin milled (200-series) 48 vokey, a spin-milled 54 and a spin-milled "funky grind" 60?

My 54 and 60 are the same. Only difference is the spin mill has worn down on the 54.

48 is part of the iron set.

Not sure about others but my wedge set has changed as my game has evolved and my expectation for each club has changed ( wearing out the grooves has also helped )

back on topic!

I agree with sms, limiting variables with your scoring clubs is essential for confidence.
It's like when you get new wedges, there is an adjustment to make. I would hate to do that on three different brands of wedges.

I've always played matching set to PW and matching wedges. Now I play matching set to SW and a different LW. Opted to include a 4-iron to fill the gap between rescue and 5-iron. Hitting it short has its rewards.;)

They're all the same. Buy the cheapest ones you can find. :)

but does it pay to have a matched set for feel.

What makes you think a set of wedges that are same make/model are going to be matched?

Yes your wedges should be matched, but that doesnt mean they have to be the same make and model.

Richard Green did a what's in the bag on Ogle's show. Three wedges all by different manufacturers

Shaft length and swing weight (roughly) should be matched, beyond that it is up to how each individual wedge works for the type of shots you commonly play. That is all that matters. Lob wedges, sand and gap wedges all have different grinds and bounce anyway because they are built for different funtions. I don't have matched wedges, the closest I have bagged was a set of vokeys. The mix I have now perform better.

Not according to Y.E. Yang. He uses R7 TP 47. RAC TP 48 bent to 52 and a Nike SV 58.

I've heard he won a tournament that was pretty major last year...

I made an assumption MTB, my bad. I have never played a matching (brand) set of wedges and wanted to know the merits of it.

Use what ever works, I was running around with a very old school Hogan Apex SW for a long time that had no grooves, that I found in a bargain bin. My PW and LW were all different brands.

NO!
As long as you have the right loft and bounce combo for your needs, who cares what Brand they are IMO!
Ive got Vokey Nomads, not that im Titty biased or anything!:smt038
In saying that I'm putting KBS Tours in mine to match my irons?:-k
