I thought I would start a thread for the lovers of 80's music.
Now the 80's for me were when I did my best drinkin, I could back up and I could spew and keep goin.
I saw bands like the Oils, Inxs, The Angels, Uncanny Xmen, Machinations, Cheap Trick, the Models, 1927, Nirvana, Hoodoos, Icehouse at Pubs and clubs.
I went to bars like Tracks, The Underground, Images, The Playroom, The Patch, The Court Jester, Rock Arena, Bombay Rock etc
And most of all I had $ drinks when it actually meant $ drinks, when you could walk up to the bar and grab 6 bourbon and cokes for $6, put em down and grab 6 more, jobs done.
FFS if you knew someone who worked for the Brisbane city Council you were golden at the Council Club.
Now the music for me still has'nt been beat, you can keep your 90's stuff, get ****ed Thom Yorke and your mates. 2000's have not inspired me yet.
I still look for the 80's gear, I like the Aussie stuff, I have seen lots of 80's bands in the last few years but I like to look at what was big in the US but not here. Til Tuesday were big and lead singer Aimee Mann still performs but the early gear rocks my world.
For a new band their songs were great, love Aimee's bass and the keyboards and guitars really fill out the songs.
Here are 4 of their best.

Nirvana are only just sorta maybe a band of the 80's. A good list though.
What about Grandmaster Flash, Whodini, Run DMC, Beastie Boys, et al. Whether you like rap or hate it, it was the last truly new genre of music to have been invented.

I believe you always remember the music you grew up with with as the best. For me, it was mid 90's when I started taking interest. mostly the Aussie rock/punk bands. But I have come to take appreciation for 80's music like early INXS, U2, the Cure and Icehouse

Pee you are missing the point of this thread, I like a lot of the current bands, Adlo's ravings put me onto Temper Trap but this thread is about 80's music, not about some dipshit who saw the Thompson Twins on Rage and said lets put a keyboard in the band.
I'm remembering when Robin Zander from Cheap Trick had a beer with us after a show at the Mansfield.

Maybe I'm too young for hardcore 80s music, as I don't know some of the artists that you are listing. There are plenty of Greatest Hits from artists that I can relate and listen to, but some of the more obscure songs lose me.

How about a bit of Ratcat in there.
I went to see a pretty popular Perth band from the 80s called V Capri play on Sunday at the Casino. They had originals plus covers of 80s rock songs including Noiseworks, Oils, INXS etc etc. I'll be going to see them again in a few weeks time.
I happen to work with the drummer. Check 'em out on Wikipedia with their glam look. WA guys might know them, or at least know their lead singer from channel 7.

as you get older you come to appreciate some things that 20 years ago you hated. For example Adlo will rave about the Cut in 20 years.
Its not Iron Maiden at Rod Laver arena but I'll go and enjoy a real band playing good live music.
All we need now is Van Halen to reform with Diamond Dave Lee Roth and its happy days. My biggest regret is not seeing Motley Crue and Motorhead when they toured a few years ago....

Was never into the metal, but living on the beaches we loved Australian Crawl (I can still listen to Sirocco) and Midnight Oil/ INXS always played close by.
By the late 80's, it was Sydney guitar pop, Falling Joys (Lock It), Tall Tales and True (Trust) , The Clouds.

IMO, the best hooks and melodies all originated from 80s music. Just listen to the stuff in the charts today and you keep hearing recycled 80s. Eg, the new Rob Thomas track has the bass line from Mister Mister - Broken Wings, and the rhythm guitar from Pink Floyd - Another Brick In The Wall.

Talking heads - My All Time favourite Band
Which reminds me of Stop Making Sense, fantastic film!
Great movie, would it be one of the first concerts filmed and marketed as such?
Some great bands mentioned so far, brings back some good memories :)
The Oils and the Angels were huge when I was in my last year of high school.
Men at Work, Cold Chisel, Def Leppard......so many others.
Stop Making Sense was the first Album I ever bought. Got it on Vinyl, tape, CD and VHS.

Talking Heads actually took the term " Burnin down the house" from the Funk Kings, P Funk. Apparantly, the drummer (who was Tina Weymouth's (the Bass Player) husband) of Talking heads went to a P Funk concert and came back yelling out P Funks war cry, "Burn down the House" ie get up and dance! The band (TH) just wrote a song around it. P Funk were one of Talking Heads's major inspirations. Listen to this live recording of one of their songs that contains one of the great Lead guiter solos of all time. P Funk, Yeah!!!!
(yes I know it is from 1979 not 1980)

Awesome thread :)
Like many others, I grew up in the 80s and love the music. Hoodoos, Mentals, Split Enz, the Oils - the list goes on. My ipod has very little from after about 1992.
Two quick stories - we go through annual Quality Assurance audits and the regular auditors were away one year. They were replaced by another guy who turned out to have played bass guitar for Mi-Sex. He was chuffed I remembered them. And on another forum I belong to (a cricket one), one of the members there used to be in The Go-Betweens.

Big DS fan here. Hated Walk of Life. Loved everything else.
Tunnel of Love (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TWX5yXMqxeA) is a favourite of mine. The guitar solo at the end (outre ?) still gives me serious goosebumps.
Love Over Gold (the album) is pure genius.

Lots, I have all the albums for starters, on vinyl of course. I saw The Church play before they became well known. Waits, Pop, Verlaine and Beefheart were 4 very influential 70s/80s artists. Most of their stuff has been covered by the likes of Bowie etc. Easy to throw up mainstream chart toppers, but I preferred a lot of the more raw stuff.

You must have been in a better spot than me - I thought it was one of the worst gigs I had ever been to - sound was terrible, venue terrible. Pretty sure Rose Tattoo were one of the supports and they seemed to be more interested than ZZ Top.

Yeah, I was in a fairly good spot. A bit of a surreal experience with all of the bikies in the audience. I'd missed out on seeing ZZ Top play at the Arena in Nimes, France the previous year when I was on a Contiki-like tour (out voted), so I was stoked to see them on the Gold Coast.

Ok, so I've stayed away for a little while but love this thread. However there are some obvious ommissions (not saying all are great but in the interest of my anal completeness side) and here they are:
Pat Benetar
Howard Jones
Bruce Springsteen (sorry but he had some classic anthem songs)
Talk Talk
Black Box, Technotronix (ok I know but I did see MARRS and S-Express)
Violent Femmes - apologies if this has been given already
Robbie Robertson (I know possibly not your guys style but I do recall a great : :smt060 time "somewhere down the crazy river")
Vanila Ice - hey it was the '80s!
Really sad thing is I worked for Warner Music (part time student job) from 1990-1992 and the WORST thing I had to do was take a van load of Vinyl and CDs to the shredding machine and watch these get churned - it still haunts me seeing Seventeen Seconds and Listen Like Thieves VIRGIN VINYL getting shredded!
Ok that's enough, but dips to Dire Straits (Telegraph Road still my favorite), New Order (Substance), The Cure, and others being on here.

Seeing the Violent Femmes in year 9 or 10 busking along the East Circular Quay promenade is a lifetime highlight. Quite literally - busking in the middle of Sydney, they performed for about an hour, giving fans a free show - up close and personal.
There were people hanging from the rafters. The old walkway coverage had people lined up along the roof getting all sorts of vantage points.
It will never, ever happen again. Interesting to read the other day that Brian Ritchie of the Violent Femmes has joined up with the remaining Midnight Oil crew (sans Peter Garrett).
