I don't think it's gay.

It makes good sense in the blistering sun we have in Australia.

More time in the shade during a round the better.

With the possibility of skin cancer and dying young and not getting to spend more time with loved ones and not being able to play golf anymore bcoz of death, I dont think its ghey. My $0.02.

No, but it's definitely gay to give two hoots about what others think.

Just hit your ball into the trees and you don't have to worry about shading yourself with your umbrella.

Works for me.

Jerry was almost going to put his umbrella up yesterday until goaded by a fellow player.

We chose to stand under the shade of trees instead.

Umbrellas are for rainy days. Just wear a ton of Banana Boat instead and toughen up

Until a few months ago I would have said it was gay but I've used the umbrella holder numerous times when it's been raining and have thought the next time I'm sweating my arse off in the sun I will have no dramas about using it.

I reckon it will start to become commonplace.

Veefore
11th January 2010, 10:10 AM
No. It isn't.

Not doing it because you think you might look gay is very vain and maybe even an attempt hide some latent homosexuality.

Ironic really since the result of skin cancers is ugly and the only people you (think you) are impressing by looking so "tough" is other men you play with. Unless of course you are playing with only ladies. In which case they probably all have their umbrellas up and think you are just stupid.

I don't think trying avoid the sun in the skin cancer state is a problem, especially if you can still get burnt after 2-3 coats of suncream. But I am starting to wonder if all the vain people who are worried about what people look like and do are metro or gay, I thought only the gay and metro were worried what others thought of them, real men wouldn't give a ****. Unless it's really gay like wearing a pink shirt or having your boxers hang out the top of your pants :-)

The correct term is parasol.

Blake - nobody forces you to play in it.

This is one of my pet peeves. Golfers coming into the office during/after a round and saying how cool it is inside and how they would rather be in here. Bullshit - I'll trade spots any day.

Played in it for 8 years in Darwin all year round, loved it, never once didnt play because of heat or humidity.

You misunderstand, I am not complaining about anything. Just making a statement of fact that I didnt like using the umbrella for shade because it is hotter in that environment.

Walking outside to pick up the newspaper from the footpath provides a 'bit' of vitamin D. Walking around a golf course under the Australian sun provides exposure to harmful UV rays.

I'll recount some of the words of the plastic surgeon, Owen Williams, who removed a melanoma from me some years ago.

Caucasian people are an introduced species animal in Australia. They come from Northern Europe where their fair skin is not exposed to the UV rays of the strength as that in Australia.
The native people of Australia & the other places close to the equator don't have dark skin for nothing. It protects them against the UV rays.
There's no such thing as a safe tan.
Caucasian Australians should avoid prolonged exposure to the sun & protect themselves with [insert everything].
If I didn't remove the melanoma it would've killed you.

I am lead to believe it is even less. Basically, the sun you catch walking to/from the car and other general "travelling" is enough to avoid a deficiency. a few minutes in total is enough, which leads me to believe that 2 hours in the sun with suncream on (which doesn't block 100%) will be more than plenty.

Useless fact: Vitamin D isn't actually a vitamin.

P.S. I have a degree, so zig has to believe me.

Would appreciate some honest answers. Do you do it?

Having just had a skin cancer cut out of my nose at age 33, I wouldn't be too concerned what others think...

Best thing I can suggest, aside from protecting yourself in the first place, is to find a trustworthy specialist and get checked regularly. For me it was the difference between a prominent scar, and an aftermarket silicone nose.

The Smoothy Umbrellas have an extra long handle and give you lots of extra height. The problem is that with the extra long handle the umbrella becomes somewhat of a pain to carry at other times, as it longer than most drivers and sticks out in the way.
