I remember someone telling me back in the day that more loft on the face of a driver will empart less side spin on a ball....

Is this correct?

How then does shaft stiffness come into play beyond this in terms of height and spin?

All other things being equal this is true. Its because more loft means more backspin which will reduce the effect of the sidespin.
