Well people I'm happy to run this again if the interest is there. I also hope to get a few more games in to give myself a fighting chance too.

Before I bother I want to know:

A/ Don't bother, interest isn't there.

or

B/ Same as the 2009 format i.e. Jan - Jun and Jul - Dec, at home course only.

or

C/ Run it over the entire year.

Vote as you will.

I'll review the results and act accordingly

Tough question, but I voted for 6 months.

In 12 months the usual suspects (JC, Dotty, Courty) will have scores we can't get near as they will all be -18 at least.

Happy for it to stay the same.

Would love to but chances of playing at home club is almost nil.

imho it will be the opposite. the people that play the most just reach their 'crictical mass' quicker.

those who play less have more time to catch up.

Should be able to nominate a 'home course' in that case. The one you most often play at..

I agree with MTB - having it over 12mnts makes it fairer and easier for a non-freak to win it.

I would be in in that case, but I know that over 6mnths, I just won't get the games in to compete.

I'd also agree with Pup that those who are country members like Grunt can nominate a local course to tackle it on.

Thirdly, I think we should get three quarters of our starting handicap.

I will be one of those that reach my maximum early..

I had -14 in about 6 months at Newcastle GC, I reckon if it went for another 6 months I would be lucky to be 1 - 2 shots better.

I suppose I tend to agree with you Scottt.

OK, I am easy either way. 6 or 12 months.

What was the handicap allowance last time?

My interest has waned in the eclectic, mainly due to the fact that it seems to be advantageous for those around a 5-10 handicap. Choppers and scratch-or-better markers need to shoot their lights out to make a difference. I wasn't even close.

I think that is the 1/3 handicap (which answers your question Scottt).

It is too low, IMO.

Agreed.

It seems to me that he handicap calculation is not equitable (not sure what method is used)

The AGU handbook I have suggests that 1/2 the handicap on the last day of the competition be used.

So you have, say a
0, 4, 8, 12, 16, 20, 24 hcp in this

So at three quarter handicap they get
0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18

At half handicap they get
0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12

At quarter handicap they get
0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

Would you expect a 24-marker to be only 12 shots behind a scratch marker over a year of eclectic? I reckon that isn'r enough shots for the high markers.

3/4 seems fair to me, even though 1/2 is probably in my own best interests.

1/2 seems fair for a year long eclectic.

Looking at it again, you're probably right.

Think about it Scott, there is only so low that a low marker can possibly go. Over the year, there isn't much that we can improve on, whereas a higher marker will certainly improve more and bring it to a level that can't be touched.

I am a mid marker, and would still struggle to improve on my score over 6 more months. We just don't make as many birdies JC. Plain and simple.

Scottt
5th January 2010, 04:43 AM
Fair call. Even off 7, I only have a birdie stat of 5-6%

One a round is pretty standard, and there are at least five holes at Deal I still haven't birdied, even after 20-odd rounds.

Dotty

Doesn't worry me either way. 6 months of free entertainment, and an excuse to buy a Lotto ticket.

FYI. I had 13 birdies each time, but could have stretched it to 15, if over the full year.

Did anyone recalc. the results from the two comps, using a different fraction/whole of the handicap?

AlexMc
5th January 2010, 07:56 AM
Would you want to do it in two divisions - one for the real low markers and one for us mortals?

Dotty
5th January 2010, 09:05 AM
FYI. I did a recalc on the latest comp. as net score under par ...

With 1/2 handicaps, Russell wins with 19, Dotty 18.5, JC/MTB 18, Adlo 17.5, Courty 17, MT 15 and Henno 14.

On 3/4 handicaps, Russell wins on 22.5, Adlo 22, Dotty 21, MTB 19.5, JC/Courty/Henno 19 and MT 15.

Note. JC's -20 gross in the original comp would have easily won the 1/2 handicap comp, and just won the 3/4 comp with 23 under net. (Other particpants totals were within a shot of their latest efforts.)

As a reference, latest results were JC 17.4, MTB 16.8, Russell/Dotty 16.7, Courty 15.6, Adlo 15, MT 14.4, Henno 10.7

I think that a whole year comp makes sense.

I'll let the debate run until the end of the week though.

I'll start on 2010 Ecletic thread and those interested can post their interest and start posting scores

Should be able to nominate a 'home course' in that case. The one you most often play at..

Would really depend on what happens with my work situation. If I stay on the Tuesday to Friday roster. It would be a game somewhere on a Monday. If I go on to a normal 4 on 5 off shift once more it would open a lot more options. Thing is I will not know what is going on until mid February. Too late for the 15th cutoff.

Also play most often at, I think that would have been Pelican Waters for the last year.
