View Full Version : The best albums of 2009.... my list

adlo
14th December 2009, 10:27 PM
After seeing the "best albums of the decade" and "best movies of the decade" threads, I checked out a few "best albums of 2009" lists on the web.

It appears there are very few albums critics agree on this year.

What is your favourite album of the year? Will there be a clear OzGolf album of the year?

If there is, I think I have an idea what it might be.

My top ten:

My list, in order:

1. Two Dancers: Wild Beasts
2. Sigh No More: Mumford & Sons
3. Xx: The xx
4. Devils Halo: Meshell Ndegeocello
5. Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix: Phoenix
6. Noble Beast: Andrew Bird
7. Bitte Orca: The Dirty Projectors
8. Not Even In July: JBM
9. When The Devil’s Loose: A.A. Bondy
10. Hospice: The Antlers

My full list post #45

Mumford and Son's: Sigh No More. It has its faults, it is a bit raw but it seriously knocked me over and keeps knocking me over.

Temper Trap's Conditions got a good wrap from nearly all of us, and I think it was #2 on JJJ's list.

I'll have to think about my own.

I think Temper Trap would feature in the top 10, but would not be "the best".

Agreed adlo, top ten. Not #1 for mind.

Can we get a list of every album released this year so that I can make a more considered choice?

I was just looking at it from the angle of it being in most OZgolfer's top 10 (at least those that read and comment in the music thread). Whereas a top album for one, may not even get listened to by another.

Well worth getting. It is a good, solid Powderfinger album.

Smart arse.

Were there any good albums released this year ?
Yes, but I doubt know how many were heavy metal/rock sorry Jarro.

I am not having a go at you, merely commenting on the fact that 99% of what you list in the MUSIC.... thread is heavy. What else do you listen to jarro?

2009 was not a year for AMAZING albums, but there have been quite a few solid albums.

I enjoyed State of the Art by the Hilltop Hoods. I thrashed that disc for a couple months.

Although i do prefer heavier rock music, i'm not at all limited to just that.

I like Supertramp/Crowded House type of music as well. I steer clear of hip-hop/rap stuff 'cos that to me isn't music at all ... it's shit !!

I really have to say that most of this newer folky/rock type of stuff really has no substance at all ... IMO of course.

maybe i should listen to the radio now and then to see if there is actually any new music that i might actually like ;)

Don't waste your time with the radio.

I find it interesting that you like Crowded House but say folk/rock is crap :-k
Anyway, sometimes you just need to sift through all the generic crap to find the gold.

Did you like Manic Street Preachers new album? It is very good, should be up your alley.

Edit: even from my list above, you should grab Pearl Jam, Powderfinger, Them Crooked Vultures, Yeah Yeah Yeahs....

Id have to say the new Muse album.. if any of them.

Muse - The Resistance
Calvin Harris - Ready for the Weekend

From adlo's list I'd say Phoenix & Temper Trap.

Phoenix have provided the greatest enjoyment for me, but not just form Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix.

Other than Phoenix & Temper Trap, my fave albums of the year would be Rockferry by Duffy, Perfect Symmetry by Keane and Sounds Like This by Eric Hutchinson.

AndyP
15th December 2009, 10:39 PM
Perfect Symmetry is 2008, otherwise I would list it.

I'm tempted to include Temper Trap in my top 3, but I'm being conservative about it's weighting, as it is fresh in my mind.

I only bought one CD all year - Invaders Must Die by The Prodigy.

Got back to their early 90's big beats and trancy sounds from Music for the Jilted Generation. Love listening to it loud on long drives without the family - it makes a pleasant change to nursery rhyme cd's that are in the stacker.

I've tried listening to JJJ again lately, and its official. I am too old.

She is in your wishlist... you've already admitted that you'd shag her.

LarryLong

I'll consider shagging her too if she makes millions out of the album.

Just popped my mp3 collection into songbird to check how much stuff I have that was actually released in 2009. Turns out the only thing I've got is Mumford and Sons, so I guess I'll have to vote for that. Very good album, too.

4. Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix - Phoenix
5. Travels With Myself and Another - Future of the Left
6. Sigh No More - Mumford & Sons
7. No One's First, and You're Next (EP) - Modest Mouse

Only album I've bought from this year is Big Whiskey and the Groogrux King (Dave Matthews Band). IMO it's a top album and deserving of its Grammy nominations, and it's such a vast improvement over their last studio offering, but I need to have listened to a hell of a lot more new music than I have this year to be objective.

It is a good album. Much better than Stand Up. However, it would struggle to crack my fave 25 albums for 2009.

Commercial radio DJs drive me crazy and the current day Triple J line-up isn't much better.

Adlo - Dizzee Rascal is a rapper from the East End of London. Very pop/rap.

My list, in order:

1. Sigh No More: Mumford & Sons
2. Xx: The xx
3. Devils Halo: Meshell Ndegeocello
4. Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix: Phoenix
5. Two Dancers: Wild Beasts
6. Noble Beast: Andrew Bird
7. Bitte Orca: The Dirty Projectors
8. Not Even In July: JBM
9. When The Devil’s Loose: A.A. Bondy
10. Hospice: The Antlers

Mumford & Sons continues to impress. Raw, not flawless, but a great debut. Overall I thought 2009 fell well short of 2008, but still a heap of solid albums nonetheless.

Honourable mentions:

Strict Joy: The Swell Season
It’s Blitz: Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Veckatimest: Grizzly Bear
Kid Sam: Kid Sam
As Day Follows Night: Sarah Blasko
Middle Cyclone: Neko Case
Blood Bank EP: Bon Iver
Actor: St Vincent
Union: The Boxer Rebellion
Resevoir: Fanfarlo

Overrated album of the year:

Post Merriweather Pavillion: Animal Collective

The most critically acclaimed album of 2009, this is not that good.

Biggest Disappointment of the year:

Unmap: Volcano Choir

IMO fell well short of Bon Iver's previous works, Blood Bank EP and For Emma, Forever Ago.

Adlo I can honestly say I have never heard of any of the albums or artists you have listed above. Not having a dig as obviously there is so much music out there to choose from.
I will give anything ago, but I would say my music taste would be more main stream. It may be time for me to experiment with some new stuff ;) Here is a list of what I listen to regularly -

Foo Fighters - Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace/ Greatest Hits
Tonic - Lemon Parade/Suger
Shinedown - The Sound Of Madness
Alter Bridge - Blackbird/One Day Remains
ELO - The Very Best Of The Electric Light Orchestra
Everclear - So Much For The Afterglow
Filter - Short Bus
Puddle Of Mudd - Come Clean
Hoobstank - The Reason
System Of A Down - Toxicity
Creed - Weathered/Full Circle
Powderfinger - Odyssey Number Five
Police - Greatest Hits
Nickleback - Dark Horse
Metallica - Black Album
Van Halen - Greatest Hits Vol 1
Hootie & The Blowfish - Cracked Rear View
Genisis - We Can't Dance

Two very out of left field albums for me.

1. Beauty Will Rise by Steve Curtis Chapman - songs arising out of the experience of losing his youngest child (adopted 5 year old) in 2008 in a driveway accident involving one of his other children as the driver. Haven't been able to listen to this album without tears. Stunning!

2. 101 More 80s Hits - well the compilation was put together in 2009. Gotta love Stutter Rap
