View Full Version : WA 2009 Matchplay Final, Mt Lawley, 13/12, Can the Canuck make it a clean sweep?

adlo
8th December 2009, 02:47 AM
OK,

While I am disappointed I am not in the final, I am breathing a sigh of relief that we finally got to the point of having a final by the end of the year.

2009 has been a big year for WA OzGolfers.

The inaugural Sandgroper Champs
The inaugural WA Matchplay
Having more than 3 WA OzGolfers posting on the forums
And who can forget the countless threadjacks (apart from 3OD who ignored them all)

So the final event for the year is here and attendance has been locked in!

Johnny Canuck (4) vs Yossarian (22)

17 shots. Can the cwazy canadian somehow muster enough internet money? Will Yossarian buckle under pressure and collapse like an Aldila DVS noodle?
The Canuck is trying to make it a clean sweep of all the "WA Majors".

Mt Lawley GC, Sunday December 13, 2009.

What a great course to play this thing. I am in like Flynn to watch this and "score".

My book would be running:

JC $1.80
Yoss $2.20

JC is a fierce competitor who seemingly can will the ball to do what he wants. Yoss is a high handicapper capable of golf much better (and much worse) than his handicap. Which Yoss will we see Sunday?

Let the sledging begin!!

17 shots is a pretty handy start, particularly if Yoss can putt and JC has an off day. Of course it could go the other way with Yoss speeding up and trying too hard. This is a toughie........no idea.

AndyP

JC has too much game, too much experience under pressure and too much matchplay smarts.

Go Yoss!

Wear something very bright and distracting Yoss.

Kumquat???

Johnny Canuck
8th December 2009, 09:25 AM
In all honesty, I would consider making Yoss a slight favourite based on handicaps alone.

From what I have seen, he is a much better golfer than his inflated-I've-only-ever-played-one-comp-round handicap.

My match play experience and the fact that my game is suited to match play should hopefully keep it close enough to pull out a victory.

High temps forecast for Sunday ~ 37C - Will the Canuck melt without the cooling breezes of KB??

If Yoss turns up with his head screwed on he'll be forcing JC to birdie to score with a shot a hole. I think Yoss will win 3 and 2...that could be the touch of death however

Topdog
8th December 2009, 11:14 AM
Yoss will win 2 and 1.

JC will have to not only give 17 shots , but will have to put up with Yoss looking at him with a gay smile and stance.

Let the mind games begin

Ad's hit the nail on the head with yoss being able to play much better then 22 as 17/18 is not out of reach, this would force JC to play to a 1 handicap.

JC before every shot don't think of Yoss staring at your arse

Good luck to both of you and enjoy the course.

Winners are grinners  and all grinners are winners :-k

At first, I thought that was directed at me after I gave a guy shit this past weekend for that.

No happy feet Yoss. He was fine the time I played Mandurah with him.

Think "Pro Side - Not Low Side" Yoss!

YOU CAN DO IT!

adlo
8th December 2009, 01:02 PM
I think the match will be won on the greens. Apparently they are rolling pretty fast. JC is a strong putter. If he can roll in a few bombs (which we know he can do) it will put a lot of pressure on Yoss' flat stick.

I don't think either Yoss or JC will struggle with the rest of Mt Lawley. Tee to green it is quite open and there aren't too many long holes.

Don't worry. I won't putt until he is still or has moved. I have no problem backing off putts.

Are we playing the pro tees for the final?

Members tees are the pro tees.

Yossarian
8th December 2009, 02:55 PM
It must have been a tough choice for zig on who to barrack for. JC in his Pro Shop threads, me in the cricket threads. It shows how dear dougie is to his heart ;)

I also think it will be the greens that will decide it. And having seen JC putt I am a little worried. I will try to make it epic though!

Yossarian
8th December 2009, 07:42 PM
Just shot 2 over for the front nine of tuart. I hope I have not peaked too early.

adlo
8th December 2009, 07:45 PM
After much thought, the odds are now looking like this.

If Yossarian has 35 putts OR LESS

Yossarian $1.60
Johnny Canuck $2.50

If Yossarian has 36 putts OR MORE

Johnny Canuck $1.70
Yossarian $2.40

Yossarian
8th December 2009, 07:48 PM
Haha, yeah i bombed a couple of birdie putts today, finally.

Wembley was actually really hard and fast. Was nice. I like.

Dats some quick greens mon. Wembley would be at what? About 9?

adlo
8th December 2009, 08:00 PM
I'd say 9-10 the past few Saturdays. They seem to pick up a bit of speed as the days gets warmer.

Yossarian
8th December 2009, 08:03 PM
Werd.

Johnny Canuck
8th December 2009, 10:15 PM
So Yoss shot 38. Minus his 11 handicap, that's 27.

I would only have to shoot 7 under over 9 to tie. Too easy.

Yossarian
8th December 2009, 10:16 PM

adlo
8th December 2009, 10:18 PM
He will not tear Mt Lawley up like that. Much more challenging green side areas and it is a new track for him. If he can shoot around 90, he will take the crown.

Wembley greens (while full of pitch marks) roll at a good speed.

BD, I know mate. Just frustrating how many golfers do not repair. But I am sure it pisses you off more than me. Old #16 is ridiculously bad. Back right and back left pin positions need to be used more often. My 2 cents.

Zac, hard and firm greens rolling at 12+ are damn hard. I'd take pure greens rolling at 10 any day.

Agreed, and that's with us giving away pitch mark repairers for the past couple of weeks.

Will look at the 16th, the 3rd Quarry at Joondy would be one of the worst going around

Make up your mind Yoss. Underdog or burglar?

TourFit
9th December 2009, 11:08 AM
BOTH !!!!

I had to give up 12 to Yoss, and was in the match pretty much until the 17th.

17 though is a lot, and I don't think that Yoss will make THAT many mistakes, or fold to that extent. If he plays steady golf and uses his h'cap well enough then he 'should' be OK.

JC will have to convert most of his chances to stay in it. MLGC is pretty hard when you're off line from the tee, as most of the time you are fully blocked out from the green. The key for JC is, if he drives it well on Sunday, Yoss will find it hard. There are Par 5's he could easily reach, long Par 4's that he'd be hitting mid iron vs Yoss's woods...that'll help him get into position to potentially win the hole I would think.

However, it's the greens where I think that's where it will be won or lost. It's gonna depend on Yoss's putting touch and his ability to get the speed right. And JC's conversion rate.

It was a could have been round.

Wiped 7.
Wiped 14 after hitting a great iron into the wind and landing in an unraked bunker. Two to exit.

Perfect tee shot on 18 that rolled 6 inches too far and left me standing in the bunker to play my second. Doubled to finish.

Took $14 off Tiger in the skins, so all was well.

The stat I'll need on the weekend, 29 putts.

Nuffie
11th December 2009, 01:46 AM
My pick is Yossarian here, as speaking from my past experiences, he as a higher marker has the advantage on a not too long a course - if he keeps the ball in play and produces steady golf.

Johnny will then be forced to take risks and make more birdies, in the hope of producing close to a par score. Now even I on these courses dont do that as often as I used to, even at my best. Johnny has a challenge on his hand if Yoss is not overwhelmed by the occasion.

Yossarian

First off well done JC, you played really well and deserve it.

Little pressed for time atm but

When you cold top the first drive of the day, it gives you some bad ju-ju. And you can't afford to wipe holes against a guy like JC. He drove the ball really solid all day, some delightful approach shots, some gun wedges and a putter that while not hot was pretty warm.

I on the other hand didn't hit a fairway till 17, didn't have any greens in reg till 16 and generally played like a muppet. Still I learnt alot about my game today and for that I am grateful. As I am as always for the company and the courses I get to play. Cheers guys.

Thanks adlo for the effort you put in as well mate. I look forward to next year. :)

Well done JC:smt038

huge effort, especially given Yoss has been in somewhat of a purple patch of late.

You are now the hunted!:smt108

Cheers guys.

It was pretty funny. Yoss told me that Ziggy pm'd him and told him to put the idea of going left in my head. As soon as he said that, he hit everything right. He is serious when he says he didn't hit a fairway until the 17th.

I was very steady off the tee with my driver. I didn't have to punch a single shot out of the rough all day. I think that put a lot of pressure on Yoss and he pressed a little too much.

I ended up with 30 points, but putt very tentatively on holes that I would normally attack due to the match play and having 2 putts to win, etc..

After the match ended, Yoss played like a champion and I went to shit. I had 4 points in the final 4 holes and Yoss would have won them all if the match was still going.

Tourfit had another "TourSpit" and took a divot on the 9th green with his putter. Adidas is thinking of pulling his sponsorship due to this behaviour.

It's becoming quiet a feature of his play isn't it?

I didn't doubt, I just never relaxed. If you'd told me to relax I woulda been in with a shot. Geez.

That and if you could make JC play more like a chopper.

Congratulations Johnny.
Commiserations Yoss.

ffs. Didn't hit a fairway until 17.
You must have posted the straightness east with that VS-Proto, which goes scary straight.

That's not entirely true. He hit a few fairways on the front nine, just in the wrong order.

I missed a couple in the first cut to! That said it was a shithouse driving performance. 17 was actually the only fairway I hit. Good times.

Well played JC, commisserations Yoss (we all have to lose first before we win).

Not good, Tourspit.

Congrats to JC he got the pressure on early with a fair sledging performance the whole way down the first hole from the looks of it  Impressive to win convincingly after Yoss' run of form and giving up a shot a hole.

Hard luck Yoss I'm sure you'll have learned some good lessons to put to use next time you are playing under pressure.

Wasn't really a divot per se, just a brush mark caused by the putter base roughing up the bent grass aginst the grain...a few taps and it was fine !

In fact it was the best shot I hit ALL day...perfect contact out of the centre of the club face...50m into the bush with the brand new TM TP Red LDP!!! They also forgot to mention that the Itsy Bitsy helicoptered towards the bag BEFORE I stalked off after the ball. It's not very aerodynamic, the Itsy Bitsy !!!

I was pissed because I'd hit 2 perfect shots on the Par 5 9th to get into great position to score. I was only 35m out & skinnied my 58* wedge through the green (thanks Golfnut for the noisy suck on the drink bottle not 2ft behind me, I nearly crapped my dacks !!). Hit another poor chip from the thick rough behind the green, missed the 15ft par putt, then missed the return putt to wipe the hole. STORY OF MY DAY.

And now I find my shoulder is stuffed to boot (and not from helicoptering putters!).

I am also thinking of a name change...TourSpit, TourShit, TourUnFit, TourFat all work at the mo'

Actually I hit a fairway on 4 I think, I thought it was in the bunker but it wasn't. So two fairways for the day!

Ya think???

I'm just sick of the great shot/crap shot routine...Have been feeling like I've been on the upturn of form and then I waste a good start (like on Friday), or fall in a heap.

Also, I'm sick of playing injured...as much as I tell myself it'll be OK, it's really not so good for consistency.

Try a crap shot/crap shot routine like mine TF. Yours won't seem so bad then ;)

You are right about one thing though. Playing injured is no good!

He'll be OK as long as he's still got his deal with Maxibon.

Swinging a putter hard with one arm will throw out a shoulder.

Get well soon Tourfit.
