Hi All

As Ping Jnr won the Matchplay title last week it now means we can get the ball rolling for the 2010 version.

Some things popped up this year that we have to avoid let happen again. Forfeits, I know some are unavoidable but this year was shocking we had more forfeits than matches played.

What can we do to fix this?

Should we have a post count before you can play in it? Alot of low posters said they would play but later forfeited.
Do we need a pre qual? Small field of 16 maybe?
Do regular players have preference in the seeding? previous Champ is 1
Strict time limits on games?
A round Robin setup like the NQ Matchplay? Regular games wit ha few matches held.
Need to cater for mid week games?

Post ideas to fix the problem so next year flows smoothly. All ideas will be considered.

Also guys & girls register your interest here too.

I was thinking of the round robin, but we seem to have enough trouble getting 2 games played, let alone 10 !

I will have to pass this year, I'm on the committee for my kids soccer. I'll struggle to get many games in at all (that aren't 6am hitoffs) for those 6 months.

Would Sydney be interested in coming down for another one day State of Origin?

I should be able to organise Parlyboy, TG, Bluescooter to represent the ACT with enough notice - reckon you could get three more from Sydney.

I'm happy to host at Gungahlin Lakes, or we could see if we could play elsewhere.

1. Grunt, thanks for organising 2009. As Virge said, you have the patience of Mother Theresa.

2. For 2010, we should set an entry deadline, say 1st Jan, as this will give a chance for 1st round matches during Jan holidays, daylight saving, etc.

3. Condition of entry that must be flexible enough to play within a reasonable timeframe. (3OD has already mentioned that kids' soccer will limit his opportunities.) Ping Jnr is now on his learner's permit, so that should make things easier for them next year.

4. We should have up to 24 players. 8 seeds (2009 quarter-finalists or past record) go straight into the second round. The remaining up to 16 have a first round match. (Similar to this year, but I suggest doing the draw after the entry deadline.)

5. Other than that, pretty much same as 2009, which I thoroughly enjoyed, met some great opponents and great fellow-competitors, who made up the tee-time.

6. Go Dotty !

I think you have to be strict with round completion dates. It might not work smoothly the first year you are strict, but it will very quickly start to come together. This year, even watching from afar, was laughable.

But the main thing is that people need to decide before they nominate whether they are willing to put the effort in to organise and play matches, and like Pete did, assess realistically whether other demands will stop them getting it done. If you're not sure about both of those things, do the rest of the field and the event organiser a favour and don't nominate.

I suggested this last year, and I'll do so again.

We should have two strands, a midweek group and a weekend group, and the winners meet in the final, if we get enough players for two groups of eight.

Whether that occurs or not, the competition simply depends upon the commitment of the players. It does require a certain degree of willingness to change our normal routine to participate in an event of this nature. In my view, going out of the comfort zone is part of the fun.

Naturally, no matter which format we follow, I am in (unless I've given up the game in frustration by then).

I would be keen, but it would depend on the time frames. Mid week games would probably be my best chance.

terrys
25th November 2009, 08:43 AM
Taking the mid-week and weekend streams a little further, if we don't get enough players to do full streams, why not seed the draw depending on who can play when. For example, put guys that can play mid week playing each other for the first few rounds, then the same with the weekend only players. Might help more rounds get completed, then when the scheduling gets a bit tougher, there are less games to try and organise.

Also would like to add I am open to passing the baton onto some one else to organise this from now on. Not throwing toys out of the cot, just that work and other stuff is up in the air at the moment and maybe someone else can work it all out better,

I'll do it.

I did it the second year, so i know what needs to be done. I would've done it again, but Grunt was in ultra-enthusiastic organise everything mode at that time, so I let him find out first hand how many wisdom of solomon moments arise in this thing.

My real personal view is that the winner should be the organiser for the next year. In Pingjnr's case that may not be realistic, so I'll volunteer.

I also need to find a way to manipulate the rules so that I can get the title back while playing woeful golf. That can only be done from a position of power.

I will be unavailable next year. I am in the middle of a project that at this stage could see me working every weekend from late January to early June.

I will speak to Nathan and see what he wants to do. He should have his "P" plates in April but up until then he will be reliant on me driving him or have to play matches at Carnarvon.

As Grunt has raised no objection I am going to take control of the running of the 2010 NSW Matchplay.

My first decision is to close off nominations in two weeks time, Sunday 17 January. The draw will be done that day, which will give some fortunate persons who are still on holidays the chance to get a match played straight away.

The draw will not be totally random. I'm going to structure it so that players known to prefer midweek play will be in the same half, and weekend players will be in the other half. I'll seed The Pings so they don't play each other first round, but they might be drawn for the next round if they survive.

Depending on how many starters we have, I'll let latecomers fill up spots instead of having byes, but those latecomers will get no leniency if they find themselves drawn against someone who can't play at a suitable time.

Time to bump this thread as a reminder to those who haven't nominated, but they are thinking about playing.

I am going to do the draw on Sunday evening, mainly to give those persons lucky enough to be on holidays in January the chance to organise a game if they need to.

At this stage I anticipate a number of vacancies, which I will allow latecomers to fill (but they don't get to choose their opponent) until the end of January. After that, anyone with a bye automatically advances.

Sydney Hacker
15th January 2010, 07:17 AM
Depending on time frames I may be able to make a mid week game. After April or so I should be fine for the odd weekend hit also.

If it helps to get more people, I may be able to do a central coast game against an opponent from up that way...

OK, NSW Ozgolfers. The draw is done. I've asked Grunt to make an excel spreadsheet and paste it into the opening post. I'll ask him to change the title of the thread as well.

1. Ping Jnr v 16 (vacant - bye)

5. Coffs Hacker v 12. Jono

8. Grunt v 10. TerryS

14 (vacant - bye) v 3. PingLauncher

2. Dotty v 15. Burger* * = not confirmed as a starter yet

6. Titliest v 11. (vacant - bye)

7. ParMaster (aka Pup) v 9. KristianJ* * = not confirmed

13. Sydney Hacker v 4. Jimandr

The numbers don't mean anything, except for the Pings, who I gave preference to.

As readers can see, there are still some vacancies to be filled if latecomers want to nominate.

The usual other rules apply. Every effort should be made to play at neutral venues, and a comp game under strict rules of golf is preferable to a social round. One of the reasons for this competition is to give us a reason to meet each other, so all matches should be announced in advance to give others a chance to join the group or act as witnesses.

I'll send a PM to Pup and KristianJ. There is an issue to worked out that is best done out of the public eye.

Enjoy your matches everybody.

To elaborate on my previous post, I've decided to leave the golf membership and handicap obtaining to after my cricket season finishes in early March, since I know my weekends will then be free to play comps and get that number.

If there's an acceptable way to be part of the matchplay in the meantime (which may well come up in the PM you send, Jim), I'll happily work with it, but if not, I'm not going to feel left out or anything. :)

As none of us have seen you play, I think we'll have to insist upon you having a handicap of some type that can be independently checked.

Jim, just raising up Grant's query re. cut off dates. Pup and I were originally going to play this arvo, but I've got back troubles that I woke up with this morning. SO we'll reschedule, but want to make sure we don't leave it too late.

jimandr

I have made some executive decisions.

Dylcross is in the competition, and he will replace Burger, therefore playing Dotty in a first round battle of relative northerners. Dotty has graciously agreed to this change.

Burger hasn't replied to my original PM message, so I'm assuming he isn't interested. If he comes back from the dead, I'll put him back in against Pinglauncher.

As far as a first round deadline is concerned, I'm not really going to set one. My solution will be to wait until the next opponent gets impatient, then I'll decide which player is most to blame for the game not going ahead, and then forfeit that person. If there is still a first round game unplayed by Easter, I'll rethink that policy.

But, if we take a long time to play the first round, that leaves less time to play subsequent rounds.

So, unless KristianJ is crippled, I estimate he has a good two months to recover and play the Pupster.

KristianJ

I was hoping you would see the light. I should penalise you for taking too long to make a decision, but I don't like conflict in social contexts. I get enough of that when I make unpopular decisions at work.

I'm still not sure of the intentions of PingLauncher and Ping Jnr, but I'm prepared to give them a lot of leeway as the finalists from last year.

At this point Uahmad is slotted into the BYE v Pinglauncher. Hopefully Ping will resurface and a game can be scheduled. You are both weekend players, so if he plays at all it should work out OK.

If an effort is being made to get the game scheduled, we can let it go on a bit longer. Nobody seems to be clamouring for news on their next opponent yet.

Ummm, I thought Ping had forfeited three months ago. I was waiting with baited breath for the Jono/Coffs result before telling players to start organising the next round.

So... players, start organising the next round of matches.

Has a cut off date been set for this rounds matches?

I was thinking

1st July 1/4 Finals
1st September Semis
1st November Final

How does that sound?

Might be able to join you gents for a game on a Monday in June... but don't let that influence your final decision, suit a date that best suits yourselves and I will see what work I have on.

Dylcross, does any tuesday round about 1:30 work for you? It's the only time I can play golf outside of weekends.

Unless of course you want to play NSW on the 27th of June??

Pup, Dylcross works in Newcastle so being available mid day mid week may be a slightly difficult match up.

My god I'm an idiot. I totally forgot to think that I can play like somewhere other than New South on sundays. hahaha

Guess we might just make it a sunday, perhaps at Asquith or something. I'm good for the 27th..

I need to announce that my proposed opponent, Ping Jnr, has decided not to play. So, by a strict reading of the rules, I get another free pass.

If winning was the only thing, I'd be happy. But I would be happier meeting other Ozgolfers and playing matches with them. Followers of this thread may recall that my first round opponent, Sydney Hacker, was unable to play before the deadline due to injury. My suggestion is that I give Sydney Hacker a lifeline, and we play our match as a 2nd round fixture. I haven't asked Sydney Hacker whether he wants to play yet, but I can't see why he would object.

Do any of the remaining interested parties (if there are any?) object to this?

Hey Jono did you get my PM, still waiting for a reply for our game..

Mate, I did. I can't get any weekend days off for the time being. As per my original PM to you, my availability is Monday. Any chance you can get an RDO on a Monday? If not, I'll just have to keep trying and ask for a Saturday or Sunday off. I definitely can't for rest of June and first half of July.

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the generous offer and so long as no-one objects I am more then willing to try and get a game in. The only hold up will be timing for me, we have a 2 week old baby now so getting out of the house is a little harder...

Having said that I am sure I can winkle a day off mid-week at some stage and meet up for a hack!

Titleist has informed me due to commitments and other issues he has forfeited his match with myself. Jim what do you wish to do here, do I just move along to the next round?

How are the other games going?

At least you have already played a game. That is good enough to entitle you to a free pass.

My game with Sydney Hacker should be happening on Monday 19 July. So some progress is being made.

Grunt,

I have already passed apologies to Pup for the late response re match this week. I've got a bit too much on the plate at present to get out and about. Had every intention to, but the young bloke has our hands full and I'm not getting a chance to have a hit at Newy let alone somewhere in Sydney.

Good luck for the remaining matches Pup.

I'm not absolutely sure where to post this, as the game had no build-up at all, so I'll post in a few different threads.

The 2010 NSW Matchplay Final was played today at Camden Lakeside, between Jimandr and ParMaster.

The result: ParMaster won 3&1.

He was 3-up after 4 holes after I made a terrible start, then we squared every hole for a while with pars, then he won holes whenever he got birdies. ParMaster then choked big time when looking at a really low round, letting me win a few holes with pars, but I was never going to peg him back all the way.

Congrats to ParMaster.
