I used to consider myself a technologist and still do to a lesser degree.

I want to get my daughter a Nintendo DS for Christmas and really don't know much about them. I have noticed that there are differing flavours of DS on the market i.e. DS Lite, DSi

Can someone who knows a little more about these inform me of the differentiators.

Much appreciated

I think the "i" has the camera... and that's about it?

The DS Lite is one step up from the original DS.. its thinner but has a bigger screen.

DSi is the new and improved one. Its got the camera, bigger screen, more RAM and bigger memory. You can also expand the memory with an SD card. It will also connect to the net. Also has better sound and better games.

The reason I know this? I looked at buying one but got the PSP instead LOL

I purchased a DS Lite for the family last month. They are great with games to suit everyone.

I also purchased an R4 chip that allows you to play games that you have backed up, if you know what I mean.

Nice. It shouldn't take too long. Now to start game collecting.

I played Lego Rock Band this morning. Great fun! In fact, all of the Lego games appear to be the goods.

This is good info. Im 'required' to get one of these for my daughter for her birthday this december. Unfortunately, ive lost the plot with technology. Im pretty sure the one I buy will be superceded and no longer trendy in 6 months time. Cheers guys

At the moment, my favourite game is Professor Layton and the Curious Village. It is a puzzle solving game with a storyline.

What version of the R4 OS are you guys using for the DS Lite? I've had the occasional issue with some of the games and some don't work at all.

Ok santa bought a ds for my daughter for xmas and just stumbled upon this thread. Whats the go with these cards and JC how do you load these up with the games???

AndyP
5th January 2010, 09:13 PM
They load via USB like any other drive. You transfer the SD flash card between the R4 game card and the USB stick, and do file transfers.

Here's another thread with some info:

1 more question. Does it come with the site where you get the games from and do you have to pay for them as well. Or is it pretty much like with my old playstation where i had it modded and just got burnt games for 5 bucks each?? Will get one for the daughters once i know how it all works i think.

AndyP
5th January 2010, 09:35 PM
The software is free from the site that sells the chips.
The games are downloadable from some other sites without cost, but similar to burnt games, it's naughty.

Jaybam,
If you read close to the top of this thread, games can be sourced from people you may know, but as AndiP said it is NAUGHTY

Naughty?? Oh well. Lucky for me a lovley gentleman on this forum has already offered to send me a disc with games on it so the card has now been ordered and my daughter will be in ds heaven.

Are the Nintendo games backwards compatible with the DSi?

AndyP
6th January 2010, 06:16 PM
Yes, they are Shavey. You can play the old Game Boy Advance games on the DS lite, I don't know if they left this feature in for the DSI.

Why is it that I'm answering other peoples questions, when I bumped the thread to ask one of my own? No need to answer this particular question. Focus on my first one.

I'm not sure what version mine is, it is 2 years old now.

I have also tried downloading Professor Layton and haven't had any luck yet in getting a version that will work.

I'll probably try and download a few more "Versions" of the game and will hopefully find something that works. Let me know if you have any success.

Thanks. I'm using version 1.09b of the R4 STHC software. Bakugan Brawlers (for my son) doesn't work either, but like you said, I think you have to wait around for a patched version for some games. I get the feeling that the R4 cards are less likely to run some games than some of the other cards.

I have one Professor Layton game that works, and the latest one doesn't. If the file wasn't so big, I'd email it to you. My first stop for games is NDSUniverse. They limit the amount of downloads, but when you have stacks of games in the first place, it doesn't matter.

Gave the R4 card loaded up with games to my daughter today. She is stoked. Thinks its the ducks nuts. Thanks again JC for the disk with games and to the people here who showed me these things exsist. $30 for the card beats $80 for one of the games that we put on already.

AP, my son has Bakugan Brawlers working on his DSi which I'm pretty sure I downloaded from NDS.

AP 1.14b with the R4 card for me. all games have been good, but have only tried less than 20. i have both Professor Laytons but haven't tried them yet.

i love Space Invaders Revolution in Classic Mode which is the same as the original Space Invaders II (in colour). ah, if only i could attach a joystick to the DSL.

AndyP

Rusty

hey here's one i missed - got it from the R4-ds.com.au site.

AndyP
15th February 2010, 10:59 PM
OK, thanks. That's where I initially got mine from, until I had a couple of game issues, then started changing versions around from various sites.

The boy and I are right into Mario & Sonic Olympic (Summer) Games at the moment.

No more R4's (http://www.channelnews.com.au/Gaming/Industry/C7C3T8B2)?

They are for the convenience of backing up all of my games to one gamecard when traveling, not for illegal game downloading.

Computer game giant Nintendo Australia has had a court win against the suppliers of (the R4 card) for pirating games. (http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2010/02/20/2825376.htm)

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but can someone explain to me why you would use an R4 card and not a M3 or Edge card.

thanks

No real reason except that is what I was recommended by a friend. Everything else is unknown. I have since heard that there are better options, like the M3.

Not sure if anyones interested but came into 5 dvds, 21 gig of games. We loaded the daughters r4 card up tonight and every one that we put on seems to work. Am sure my wife knows how to copy the discs so if you are interested let me know.

Just bought the young fella a DS & R4 for his 9th birthday.

The R4 card for our DS is still working fine, but it's compatibility with games isn't great. It isn't supported very well firmware wise either.

The MIL's R4 card has now bricked two flash cards, so I'm going to get an Acekard 2.1 for ours and give her our R4 card.

Since the original R4 stopped being made many years ago, any R4 you get now is a clone which may account for some of the reliability.

The Acekard apparently has great firmware support and is simple to use. There are better cards out there, with great features like divX playing and SNES emulation, but for game playing, my research tells me that the Acekard is the best value. I'm also going to buy it within Australia to avoid any warranty issues, although it will only be for 3 or 6 months.

Rusty

good to know. i'll get an Acekard if the R4 plays up again.

Got dsi's coming for the kids from santa. Having not read the thread as such for a while, is this something I should be looking at?

yeah, we were thinking about a DSi for our 5.5 year old. I think she'd love it, but not sure if we should hold out til next birthday. I think it would make the 3.5 year old insanely jealous on car trips.....

It is more cost efficient per game..... There would be a different card recommendation for a DSi though. The Acekard I'm getting is for the DS and DS lite only.

BV, DSXL is the latest model. If they still sell the DSi I guess it would be a good price now. Our 3.5er hasn't got jealous about the DS at all.

AndyP

Stuff buying them from Australia. I can buy 3 from OS for the same price.

http://shoptemp.com/categories/DS-Flashcarts/Acekard/

They can be had a little cheaper too, but this site is linked with a forum that was helpful.

Having bought my son a DSi a while ago, I decided to go with the DSTWO. A tad more expensive but it has it's own cpu and ram and it also allows you to play backed up GBA games. It also has a inbuilt divx player.

AndyP
30th November 2010, 06:59 AM
That's the card I was talking about with all of the extra features, that we don't really need. Does the divX stuff work now?

Thanks for the info AndyP. I just ordered a couple of these cards to go with the DSLites I bought for the kids. Fingers crossed it all turns up in time for Christmas.

I'll be keen to hear what are the good kid friendly games to get.

As I said, there are plenty of games to come by in these parts. Something like Nintendogs is always good for the kiddies.

My DS Lites from EBGames turned up, as did the AceKards I bought from Honkers. One was setup in French when I turned it on, but I've since sorted them out with the kids names and birthdays etc.. I got some Hello Kitty cases for them too. Off to get a card reader so I can load some roms onto the cards. They're cool little consoles, I reckon the kids will enjoy them.

My eldest had her first play on a DS last weekend at a party (my niece's) and she loved the Pokemon game. She was saying to me she hoped Santa brings a DS for Christmas!

I was going to say that the Acekards I got came with a card reader, but now that I think about it, I think the card reader came with the old R4 cards that I got.
