OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!! Yesterday was my 5th Valentines Day and I cannot believe how busy it gets. Each year is just bigger and busier. Yesterday my takings was the equivalent of 3 weeks normal trading - that's a lot of flowers!!! And a hell of a lot of work.
But I must admit it is a great day. All the guys coming in to buy flowers -most of them haven't got a clue what to buy. We look after them and tell them how sweet they are to buy flowers for their ladies and they walk out feeling special.
It is annoying how the growers double their rose prices for Valentines Day - and a lot of florists too.
So - did any of you guys or gals buy flowers for Valentines Day?? If yes - what did you buy, where did you buy them and was your partner pleased?

Orstraylyan blokes don't buy flowers. [-(

Well, I was very un-Australian yesterday and picked up a dozen red roses for my lovely wife. She liked them. Mission accomplished. :D

It's been years since I've bought roses at retail prices. Used to get them from rok when he ran a hydro rose farm here in Bris. Those were the days... He supplied the flowers for our wedding and it was simply amazing!

Unlike the obvious omission (see above) - i went and bought flowers.

I could buy a small crop of roses with some baby's breath and other greenery, pre-made for $50+. Or you could do as i did, selected some big glady's, gerbera's, and 2 other sorts of flowers - all 'warm' colours from yellow (Anita's fave colour) to orange to pink (Gerb's) to red (Glad's), with greenery for the same price. I had trouble getting out of the shop.

The beauty part was - I picked the flowers for them to make up, told them i'm back in 45 mins to an hour, ducked up to the doctor's appt and back in 20 mins. They saw me and panic'd, made up a great bouquet while i waited, and apologised profusely that they had kept me waiting, and gave me a seperate single rose. I felt embarrassed because i was 25 minutes early, but took the extra rose nonetheless, which became the 'Roady' for my wife when i picked her up that night ;)

My Hubby did not get me any flowers...... but every year he gives me 1 red rose on our Anniversary of our first date, October 16th...

I had to work early on Monday morning so I got a roast dinner on Sunday night.... but for Valentines day I got something better...... the kids went to bed early...

that's all I wanted.... and I got it....!!!

Cheers

No flowers for me - we don't celebrate Valentines day in a commercial sense (sorry to all the florists out there!)

We bought a whole lot of camping gear on the weekend - so I suppose we sort of did buy each other something for Valentines Day!

I'm with you Amanda.

Thankfully my wife feels the same way. She didn't even want an engagement ring. I got her a widescreen TV instead. :D :D

It's a Hallmark day.

I despise the crass comercialism of these sort of things, fathers day, mothers day and so on, but my lovely got a bunch of a dozen red roses delivered to her in her office because I love her more than I hate the Hallmark Hooligans!

I agree that Valentines Day is pure commercialism - but a lot of women believe in it. And as I tell all the guys that come in and complain about having to buy flowers - it is a small price to pay to stop all the moaning all year - Oh you mongrel - you never buy me flowers.
Also I tell them - you gotta give a bit to get a bit. They like that one.

Valentine’s Day was, of course, named after the famous St. Valentine. He was better known as Bob Valentine, a junior clerk at the head office of Hallmark International who, in 1897, walked in on a brainstorming meeting of senior executives and suggested that they invent a special day dedicated to men and women making cringing declarations of love towards each other despite having been total pricks for the preceeding 364 days of the calendar year. The assembled Hallmark executives turned to each other, sat silent for a moment and then erupted in a round of applause. The greeting card industry was saved. A motion to name this new day after the clerk was passed unanimously and he was immediately promoted and given an office of his own. Valentine would later become the Chairman of the entire company, and retired to a ranch in Oklahoma in 1941. He was given a sainthood after his untimely 1952 death for services to the floristry, greeting card and chocolate industry. He never saw the irony of his creation continually being abbreviated to “VD".
