Coolangatta-Tweed

Morning - River - 7:24am - 8:27am NSW TIME
Arvo - West - 1:25pm - 2:25pm (however should be right to hit off after the last members have come through, estimated 1:15 ish)

$75 for 36 holes, including carts.

(36 players/18 carts booked)

[Admin edit (AndyP):  Added booked details]
------------------------------------

OK Guys and Girls, this one might take some time to bring together,so I thought we might start tossing some ideas around for this one.

I think that 36 holes in the one day is out after last year.

Also seeing as our Sydney Ozgolfers are getting some good turn outs it might be a good idea to find a venue halfway somewhere, like Tweed Heads again

I'm not sure what is good on the NSW north coast and is half way between Brisbane and Sydney.

Just my thoughts guys, what do you think......

Terry.

36 holes in one day works for me. What about...

1. Nudgee North & South
2. Bribie & Pacific Harbour
3. Keperra 27 holes
4. Coolangatta-Tweed again...
5. Toowoomba City & Middle Ridge
6. Indooroopilly East & West
7. Coffs Harbour & Bonville (long drive for everyone :( )

Geez Richard ... you certainly have a lot to say for someone who prefers watching horses and hats ...

Tezza, halfway might be more of a hassle for more people. I think we need to find somewhere close to an airport. I say Cool-Tweed again. I don't mind 36 holes, but perhaps a slightly later tee off time? We had plenty of daylight left at the end of the day ...

BTW, what's happening with the trophy, AndyP? :?

I like it somewhere with an airport.

Brisbane or Gold Coast is cheap cheap cheap by air :smt023

WHY NOT AN EVENT AT NEWCASTLE OR SYDNEY?
Yearly rotation of venue :?: 8)

How about 18 holes Sat arvo and then 18 holes Sunday morning.

PS....I don't have a problem with 36 holes in one day 8)

I'm IN 8)

I think we need to find somewhere close to an airport. I say Cool-Tweed again.

Nudgee is extremely close to Brisbane airport and offers two distinctly different types of golf courses. Plus, we got a few Nudgee members here who might make it easier to organise...

My vote is for the Champs to be held in the Coffs Harbour area for 36 holes, with an overnight stay. Otherwise we need to call it the QldGolf Champs.

Alternatively, you can play 36 holes in Qld (Bribie or Sunny Coast area sounds good) OR 36 holes in the Sydney area, but you can only participate in one location. [Sorry Vic based members, but you would need to build the southern membership more to be considered for hosting].
The winners of these two events have to play matchplay at some stage.

Might be a dud idea, but I thought I would float it.

So if a thread for the Champs has started, can I start a thread for the 2005 McLeod Cup now?

amanda
14th February 2005, 01:57 PM
If we can get time off for this - we will be driving up - so anywhere is cool - Qld is only 11 hours away.

I like the idea of a Sat arvo game and a Sunday morning game - see who has enough self-restraint on Saturday night

Has to be a 36 hole event in my books too, i don't see what the concern is (bring lots of water, and Neurofen!). Besides I need at least 9 to warm up.

Tweed is a good venue because you can usually get good travel rates to Cooly airport. Otherwise, Casino is 20 mins away from Lismore, which you can fly to for about $95 ;) Arranging 36 holes there would be a sinch too.

As for venues, i'm up for anything;
Cooly/Tweed
Ocean Shores
Mur'bah
Bonville (i don't think it's near the ton? If a group is arranged well prior i am sure we can get a better rate)
Anything in the Hunter Valley (Vintage / Cypress, but $$$ a worry)

BTW, what's happening with the trophy, AndyP? :?
Will not be using the services of the guy that screwed me over.

Local trophy centre near home was not open from before Xmas until the end of Jan, and is only open from 9:30a to 11:30a on Saturdays on weekends anyway.

Drove to the shop on Saturday at 10:30a, and he has changed his working hours to not working on weekends.

Will be walking to one close-ish to the City this week.

I also have a list of those that have not paid.

Thanks Dan, but I'm not about to pass this one off now.

The Champ has told me that he isn't too worried about not receiving it yet anyway. Just a shame that he hasn't had it in his display cabinet for longer. (Unless of course he wins....again)

$84 for groups over 20 on a weekend. Thats still pretty close to the ton. 8)

Also, don't do it on Oct 29/30....I'm hoping for a sequel to the viewing of hats and horsies in Melb. 8)

I am all for an annual venue rotation. Gold Coast one year, and Brisbane the next and so on.....

The 36 holes was not the problem last year - it was playing the 2nd 18 as stroke, combined with that course that killed the scores. If it was stableford it wouldnt have been anywhere near as bad.

Its our premiere event, it has to stay at 36 holes, and be played at the home of Ozgolf, otherwise its going to be a weak field.

maybe we can consider running a joint comp, with two venues. Try to play on evenly matched courses and then adjust the scores by the difference in the course rating.

Or to help out all those faraway people- have a seperate Virtual Championship. Everybody plays their home course on a specified day. That way nobody has an advantage or disavantage.

I vote for 36 holes in one day at Cool-Tweed. It's a thinking man's course that can't really be overpowered. Gives everyone a fair shot at it. Carts - a must, if we are going to do 36 holes. Make it November so horse-lovers can make it as well ...

Just adding my comments -

1 - we did Tweed last year - how about a new venue ? - otherwise we'll end up going there every year because it is a 'tradition' - surely we can be a little more adventurous than that.

2 - 36 holes in one day was an interesting concept - but we all pretty much had had enough by the end [cast your mind back !] - I would much prefer 18 on the Sat arvo and 18 on the Sun morn - same venue - or 2 different ones - that way we get the opportunity to catch up on the Sat night , post the odds on the next days play etc - I really enjoyed the Sat get together down at Tweed and think this would be a great halfway interlude between the 2 rounds

3 - I like 69ers suggestion of Kooralbyn too - a great track - accom is dirt cheap - they have a little pub / eatery we can get together on Sat night and you get to play the 5th hole twice ! [ I think they still have a 9 hole par 3 course too - just like being at Augusta - an extra ozgolf comp!

If C/T can accomodate, then it sounds good.

Has to be a 36 hole event, 18 just isn't a 'champs', and if southerners are travelling, it has to be worth our while.

Having said that, sounds like i'm making an early commitment. Mind you, hope to be living up there once October comes around. [-o<

yeah, Koralbyn is crap at the moment, they got this green stuff all over the fairways so your drives dont get 50m run, and the greens are like putting on carpet instead of the usual glass.

and on the sides of the fairways they got this thick green stuff that stops your wayward tee shots from rolling back to the centre of the fairway.

Hate it, not going back there again until the next drought.

My vote is for Kooralbyn...

Accomadation is reasonable, course is great layout, Par 3 course for extra credit, Accomadation means I can bring the family and let them have a great time in the pools while I play golf.

Let's organise it and get some groups bookings for accomadation and also for the golf. I also think Saturday Arvo and Sunday Morning for the 36 holes...

Not speaking personally of course - i hope to be near that part of the world around that time of the year.

Just don't see the point in significantly changing the dates of an annual event.

You didn't actually expect me to think about the NRL final, did you?
Out of curiousity has NSW Labour Day always been on that weekend, and has the final always coincided?

It's a little early, but it would give the NSW peoples the best chance of making it, if it is being held up here.

I still vote for 36 holes to be done in a day...wrap it up all in one day.
Nudgee or Cool-Tweed for me.

I'm no chance if this is a 2-dayer. Plus, Kooralbyn is a goat track an hour from anywhere...

BrisVegas
21st February 2005, 10:21 AM
What will Nudgee cost ?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Open comp is $20 for visitors on the North course. A social round on the south course is around $25 I'd guess. They might even do it cheaper if one of the Nudgee members butters them up... A cab from Brisbane Airport would be $15 tops.

peter_rs
21st February 2005, 10:25 AM
Nudgee cost from memory
North-$26
South-$28
Cart -$25

But on a weekend you would be hard pressed to get 5 tee times that follow or carts get on the North course.

Fishman Dan
21st February 2005, 10:37 AM
Just another option for 36 holes in the one day:
Emmy lakes - Palm Meadows.
Probably do a deal at Palmie for under $60 and Emmy will be no more than $30.
Cool-Tweed was $75 for 36 holes incl carts.
What will Nudgee cost ?

If it's 2 venues then we lose 2 hours in transit, lunch etc. Better to be a single venue.

Besides, how are we going to ferry all the punters and their gear?

Palmy would surely do a 36 hole deal? AM and PM rounds?

AndyP
21st February 2005, 10:57 AM
I guess were going to be looking at a min of 20 punters here..maybe over 30.
19 last year.
I would expect a few more than that this year, as there are a few more locals that have joined up.

Is Bribie Island an option?
g69, when is Pacific Harbour up and running?

Jarro

North course = $26 ($20 as a members guest)
South course = $23 ($16 as a members guest)

As long as we are not paying overpriced green fees i will be happy to play anywhere. IMHO $75 or whatever we played last year is about the max, If we end up playing any resorts we will be looking at $100+

Nudgee sounds good, but also consider the regal Emerald Lakes where we can finish after dark. Gives us more flexibility for lunch and changing venues, or an option to start later in the morning.

How about a Poll?

Windaroo/Riverlakes (or logan)
Nudgee/Nudgee
Emerald Lakes / GC Country Club
CTH/CTH

it wont be a problem booking in the consecutive tee times, if we are planning this far ahead.

Carbrook is closer to riverlakes then windaroo.

This could be a left field combo but what about southport/surfers paradise

Fishman Dan
21st February 2005, 02:05 PM
I think the Golf Coast is perfect, flights are somewhat more available from down south and/or cheaper.

Personally i hope to be in Casino by that time of the year, which means 1.5 hours to CTH, 3 hours to Brisbane, and anything further north (Bribie etc) - forget it. For Drunken it's about 45 minutes less to each destination. To do the drive there, play golf and drive back is plain silly.

Perhaps even add either Murwillumbah or Ocean Shores if you want to get adventurous, but there's no reason we can't just leave it at CTH as 'The Champs' - it's a track we all know (or will do by then), so if it's neutral territory you want, then it makes sense.

You think they'd ever move The Masters from Augusta?

peter_rs
21st February 2005, 02:16 PM
true but that is because they are good courses. With 6 months notice we have been able to get block tee times for 25 before.

gainsbourgh greens/gold coast country club could be a good combo as well but gainsbourgh is in the middle of no where.

I think a poll is the best way to go. It depends if you like resort or park style courses

markTHEblake
21st February 2005, 02:41 PM
How about short listing the courses where we can get a good price for a start. We have got some leverage at Emerald Lakes, Riverlakes and Lakelands. Any more?

Fishman Dan
21st February 2005, 02:50 PM
If it's price you want, you can't go past 4 x Kyogle (9 holes). Sure we could swing a deal there.

AndyP

Sandgate? Pine Rivers? California Creek?

Perhaps we should have a poll on a general area first.
Or cut the crap and go back to CTH.

Its been proven time and time again, that collectively we couldnt organise a catfight iin a whorehouse. If someone doesnt grab the bull by the horn and organise it, we will still be having the same discussion in september.

How about we put together a 'match committee" of say 3 blokes (or babes) to organise this one. if more than 3 nominate then we vote.
then as for the event, comittee decision is final. Agree ?

great course ? - well half of it is
great price? - well half of it is
best location? - subjective
36 Holes ? - can't recall you there 69 - was it hard work ?

we need to go somewhere different - CTH has been done , time to move on .

damoocow

Damo - all fair points, but please factor in the travellers.

Golf Coast - If we can get 2 rounds anywhere for the quality/price of CTH, book it now. The travellers can spend a second day at the beach, theme parks etc etc. Other boutique golf courses also around and within spitting distance of Cooly airport.

Brisbane - Nudgee is close to the airport, but what else is there to do? Swim the Brisbane River? I'm speaking for Sydney-ites, so if it comes down to free-time/following days activities, I for one want to spend it OUT of a capital city.

damoocow
21st February 2005, 10:30 PM
fishy - do not mind playing down the coast - but prefer not to go back to CTH - need change or else we become the same as the JJJ / The Panel / Rove / Sunrise / Glasshouse / ACB / Kath and Kim / Morning FM radio / New Idea / Sizzler / etc etc etc. -
boring boring boring

Did anyone read Blakey's last post in this thread?, this thread will be 50 pages long before to long, and no-one will be any the wiser as to WTF is going on.

So I agree with blakey's idea get a match committee organised to organise this, I am sure they will come up something suitable before this thread will, and if you don't like their decision, stiff shit.

Why do we need a committee to decide something that's already been mentioned above? Surely we just need to pick from 1 of about 3 options discussed. All this for a champs that doesn't really exist?

Just find a venue that will have us, for the right price, that's suitable. Book it, we'll turn up.. or not? And for those counting you can add the results to your money list.

BrisVegas
22nd February 2005, 08:22 AM
Robina Woods - Colonial will do a 36 hole deal for $120 incl carts. A good deal but too rich for me.

Cool-Tweed will do the same $75, 36 hole package with carts and have availability on Oct 23, Nov 6, Nov 27...all Sunday's.

Good work Wilson. Glad to see you putting in the hard yards organising this rabble again. Hope to actually see you at the champs this year.

Oh yeah, $75 is about top dollar for me too...

Why do we need a committee to decide something that's already been mentioned above?

becuase as a group we cant decide anything. we have a proven track record that unless one person just goes out and organises the date and times it wont even get off the white board

if one person decides then there will be complaints.

a committee is a good way to go.

FWIW, i phoned Nudgee to see what we'd be looking at to play there.

$56 for the golf. $30 for a cart shared by 2 + for a few extra bucks we could get some nibblies for the half-time breather.

now the guys in the office said we can do it, but they stated that the greens on the North course are due for renovations at the end of October, so it would be in our best interests to play it before that date.

Just another option to throw at the committee

AndyP

So Nudgee would cost more than CTH. Ouch!

Why isn't there a Vic rep on this committee? Flowergirl?

Remember, CTH is actually a NSW (NRDGA) club, so the prices are always going to be hard to beat compared to city and/or Golf Coast clubs ;)

Flowergirl is more the welcome to voice an opinion - and will get a chance to this weekend, but is will come down to this - cost and availability of flights from Melbourne to either Cooly or Brisbane, and cost of accomodation.

Since we are not "allowed" to complain about the courses now, can we complain about the committee?

Will Fishy have NSW peoples best interests at heart, considering he may be up here by the time of the Champs?
Can we get moocow kicked off the committee?
I thought Blakey only organised committees, not actually participate in them.

Andy has read me well. I like to propose ideas, but i dont like to carry them out. Am thinking of running for parliament one day.

my suggestion was to allow people to volunteer for comittee, not volunteered. And if more than 3 nominate then have an election.

you could say that this is the first step into forming ourselves into a proper golf society.

The shirts requirement is only for the Player of the Year. Nothing to do with the championships at all.

Then last year there was a bunch of crying when it was revealed a certain Professional golfer would play, who was well known to everybody but had not yet joined the forum. (despite the fact that he had given the forum members a free lesson and donated prizes for an ozgolf day)

After a bit of stirring (who me?) the consensus was that anybody could play in the Champs but only members of Ozgolf forum were eligible to win anything.

Given that, and I am sure everyone would agree that the last thing we want to see, is someones 'mate' joins the forum, never posts, wins the champs, takes the trophy and is never heard of again.

nah, don't worry sweet cheeks, it'll be apples. **insert wolf whistle for Richard's Skinny ar$e here**

with the normal ingrained ozgolf attrition rate approaching the champs, we'll probably pull up under again?

I've booked 32 for this. Do I slip in a few more to cover my skinny ar$e ?

I think you're delusional.

Not that we can't get more than 32 (but watch 'em drop like flies come November), moreso the size of Uranus.

You're right again fish. Imagine when that nasty Northern Rivers tummy bug hits, they'll drop like flies.

Don't worry about it - these more advanced NSW tummy bugs have better taste than to infest the lower-colons of you QLD'ers....

I'm just saying doug joined in Nov 2004 and has made ONE post.
I'm sure he aint losing any sleep over his ineligablity but justified don't you think ?

He never intended participating anyway. I just threw his name in there to see what sort of reaction it would get and it nearly bought the house down. (how unlike me to stir)

Someone asked the other day if there was any eligibility requirement for the champs, and got a bunch of wrong answers. So I'm just saying that the answer is in the precedent from last year.

Obviously we would get some dropouts by the date (hope not) but if we are looking at 10+ groups are there gonna be any probs with the club. If so, should we be talking to them already to see if it's ok?

Just a thought if the numbers get too big why don't we split into 2 groups, group A play river course & group B play west course in the morn then swap for the arvo, Should stop the 1hr+ wait on the tee for the last pairings then

maybe we can do a shotgun start ourselves on both 18's ?

but then again 38 is not enough to lockdown an entire course for a shotgun.

Morning 8:00 - 9:00 (River Course)
Arvo 1:15 - 2:15 (West course) or immediatly following members completion.

If we allow for a 4.5 hr round, Its not going to leave much time for lunch and a seeded draw. may well have to play in the same groups in the arvo.

You have taken that out of context.

when i said "Your Kidding"   I am agreeing with you,  it worked out OK - just perfect

it worked out OK last year

yes becuase the break was longer, and we had less players.

playing in the same groups for the 2nd 18 is fine -
- BUT
it is a social occasion, we should try to mix it up a bit
and it creates better interest/sledging if the leading players are in the last group.

as it stands now, if anyone changes groups for the 2nd 18, they are looking at a break of 35mins or less....

Rather than a seeded draw, how about the earlier groups just mix up so fresh groups play in the afternoon. You don't have to wait for everyone to come in - just a few groups etc. Then have the top 4 contenders play in the last group.

I know I know, how will we know who the top 4 contenders are if all the groups are not in yet? We won't. But progress scores always pass around the groups so we'd get an idea of who are looking likely. Those pretty much out of it can re-form groups and those in with a chance at the final 4 can wait till things look more certain.

At least things can get moving - and those coming in in the last groups don't have to get ready for an immediate start.

Anyway, it's just a thought. I like the idea of having the last group or 2 filled with those incontention, but it doesn't have to be completely seeded throughout does it?

Last year format was good.

My vote for an earlier tee time and a seeded draw for the 2nd 18s :P

golfer69, it appears that it is a forum hobby to undermine your good organisation.
I suggest that you make this one last move to keep the whingers happy, before shutting up shop and telling everyone to bugger off if they want to change it again.

markTHEblake
17th June 2005, 12:49 PM
why do you keep changing the times, there was no discussion about changing them before, and who is pushing for 7.15am?

must be a lot of PM's flying around.

You know it makes sense to make a booking this early using a 'wider' window, can always be narrowed later.

Keep ya trousers on.

You did a fine job last year, and are following it up again. Dunno why your picking on me, how about hassling all those people in the chat room or real life, they are the ones getting you to change it all the time.

Any chance of me and the missus getting in a piece of the action.

Would love the chance to meet a few fellow Ozgolfers and last time I played CTH I was at schoolies, last more golf balls than I can remember and broke two of my dads clubs. Not a good day.

Would also like to donate a few Ozgolf hats or shirts for prizes on the day if that's alright with Goughy. Maybe a long drive and NTP prize.

Just add yourselves to the list. I don't know (g69 may) if we are gonna have number restrictions, but considering it's still a while away we're bound to have a few pull out (hope not tho).

I'll do it.
