View Full Version : How Will You Play The 10th Hole At Pelican Waters?

Eag's
5th November 2009, 06:20 PM
I thought I would get this going considering the Champs are so close.
We are off the 10th, which is a 465m par 5 (from the blues) and it looks like a fairly straightforward opening hole. No big clumps a bloody bamboo to worry about this year ;) There looks to be some short, but very tricky holes so I can see the hybrids getting a good workout.
The back nine looks a lot tighter than the front so if your long game is off it could be a long weekend :)
Feel free to add more holes and give your thoughts and tactics.

Carry the bunkers on the left and then land a 3 wood on the green sinking the putt for eagle?

gregh
5th November 2009, 06:30 PM
gday all
have played this hole plenty of times ( as old man backs onto 10 fway),def driver off tee as most will be able to drive past bunkers,3 wood or hybrid for 2nd shot for position and easy wedge on , most should par it or even birdie for longer hitters, only trouble is if you miss fway to right off tees, last 3 holes toughest on course, love this course as have played it 15 times

Where did all those houses come from? There was nothing there when I last played the course. Now when was that?

old man been in there for abt 2 yrs now

Moe Norman

I find this to be the hardest hole on the course for me, I always try to get there in 2 and end up dead down to the left short of the greenside pot - which is 100% dead.

Whatever you do, leave your second out to the right, lay up short and leave yourself 100 in if you have to - much better than being 20 out on the left.

Driver, 21* hybrid or 4-wood, 50* wedge and putt/putt. If the wind is blowing from the north the third shot will be a knockdown 9-iron if 1 & 2 goes to plan.

No need for heroics on the opening hole (especially with the peanut gallery we'll have assembled there)

Driver, 3 wood to pin high RHS in the rough. Pretty dead down the bottom there as well as it's all downhill all the way to the front pin.

5th November 2009, 07:29 PM
Skull my drive - left to just short of the first set of trees - think (wrongly) I know what I am doing and try to hook my three wood (which I always slice or cold top) around said trees into a playable approach position, hit the 3w pure and as straight as the nullarbor highway, clipping aforementioned trees ending up in fairway pot (the 1st one). Smash my 3hy as hard as I can, managing to splash the ball out of the bunker back onto the fairway (or possibly into the next bunker but for arguments sake lets say I have some luck). Get my 3w out again and aim at the road way on the left, manage to get some good contact and watch a beautiful banana slice roll the ball up past the last two bunkers on the right. Blade my chip just off the back of the green. Roll my put 5 foot short of the hole but then drain the last (I seem to be OK at those sometimes) for a neat 7 a 2, as long as the index is right and it damn well should be changed if it isn't.

I won't be there so you will just have to believe me :)

Ok, it's roughly 210m to clear the last trap on the left (if you intend to take that line) so a decent tee shot will be needed. For me a nice raking draw down the right side, bunt my hybrid and flick a lobby to 10 feet, 2 putt par 8-)

3w, 5i, wedge, putter. That's the play, if the driver will put you in the bunkers off the tee (it may not for me). The advice to play the approach from the right is good stuff. I've birdied the hole twice after playing the hole safe like this.

Can't believe you guys are discussing the strategy of this hole, of all the holes at Pelican.

I've played there quite a bit - and look forward to hearing the stories of dramas on 2,3,6,15,18.

But most of all the 5th, 9th and 16th. They are 3 holes that do not have ANY margin for error. The 5th is a mid handicappers nightmare, and 16th you can hit 3 great shots and still walk off with 7.

..and keep an eye out for the snakes!! I wouldn't be looking too hard for balls in the scrub - especially on 9 and 16

The 10th is only index 17 so no shot to play with if you get into trouble. So for me Driver, 5/6 iron and wedge in.

Now the 18th looks like some hole for getting into trouble!

In match play against ap this year....

We played of the whites

I went 3 wood center fairway past the traps,
3 wood in the left green side trap and plugged.
still in the trap
over the back
lob onto the edge.... :)

AP
Driver (or 3 wood)
iron layup
wedge on
monster putt for bird.

I recommend the layup.

It is going to be fun of the blues I have played the course 3 times in the last 4 years of the whites and never had a score. I found off the white I was hitting lay ups all day like a 5 iron on the 2nd. I found it difficult to judge the layout zones.

I can see the 2 days offering very different scores for peoples.

lets hope the wind is up to keep the rain away.

465 is the whites, blues are 500 - or are we playing off the whites?

Yes you are correct I just assumed the back tees would be the blacks.
We will be playing from the whites by the sounds of it?

Can't believe you guys are discussing the strategy of this hole, of all the holes at Pelican.

We are starting on the 10th tee so it made sense to start with that hole. I will put up a few more of the tougher holes soon.

Eag's
6th November 2009, 12:11 PM
Ok, here is one of the tougher holes Boonie was talking about.
It is the 5th only 334m Par 4 from the whites, but very tight.
Obviously left means trouble, but if you manage to catch one of the traps it will leave you with a difficult approach. The second fairway trap on the right is roughly 190m from the tee, the left hand trap is 206m & the last right hand fairway trap is 228m. The fairway runs out at about 280m, but it would be a brave sole to grab the big dog on this hole ;)

yeah, you do not want to end up to the right of the last bunker on the right. It is deader than dead. Trust me :(

razaar
6th November 2009, 12:56 PM
On this hole the safeest route is to drive to the widest part of the fairway short of the last fairway bunker, which is a drive of 210 - 230 yards. Leaving a wedge or 9-iron to the green. Make sure the shot into the green is right of centre. The big hitters will only need a 5-wood, SW or GW. It is not really a hard hole.

wouldnt you be better off taking your drop another 30m further down?

now there is a point, if you hit into the water do you drop in the bunker, or is the bunker considered part of the water hazard

Courty
10th November 2009, 07:39 PM
I'll try to draw one over the end of the bunker (220-230m carry) and double-cross myself resulting in a massive block out into the middle of the lake. Take a drop from not far in front of the tee, then cold-top my way to the green. Chip on for 6 then bury a 20ft snake for an easy double.

The fairway is wide and pretty easy to hit, but stray off the short stuff and the lateral hazard rough is very punishing, as it is on all of the holes at Pelican. Last year I found a "nest" of about a dozen balls in one of the reedy bushes to the far right!
