Is it tough to change a .355 to .370 ? Anyone ever done it ?

Shims?

cut up a coke can or 2 and make some shims.

I read that as the opposite. He wants to make a 0.335 iron take a 0.370 tip?

Correct Henno, I want to use a .370 in my .355 heads. Suppose I could use a cutup Coke can but it would need to be diet ;)

The only proper way is to drill the heads. It's not a lot of material were talking about drilling out. Then if you want to go back to .355 you shim the shaft.

Sorry 3, ive heard of guys making a small cut at the tip and forcing it in?

What are you talking about now ???

I guess the question, if anyone has done it, is is it something I could do myself or do I take it to someone. I guess my concern would be getting it straight.

I think golfsmith used to have a special vice that bolted to a drill press just for this purpose.

What shafts are you trying to fit to what? And wouldn't it be easier to just get taper shafts? Also drilling the heads could affect resale if that is of any concern.

Its the only way that I have seen it done - clamp jig and drill press to ensure accuracy of depth and centre. If the drill goes off centre the walls of the hosel will be weakened endangering the head to a fracture if the lie is adjusted at a later time.

I'm starting to realise that it's probably not the Toppies that I love, but the Dynalites that are in them.

They are .370 so I was going to try and find a lower offset head but finding that and .370 is a tough mix.

I am looking at the Wishon 550 series but they will probably be too expensive when I could buy say a set of Precepts for under $150 (or so)

There was some 550 heads on the bay recently, seem to be gone. How about these 705s?;

Don't think they ship internationally, but they look pretty fugly. When I first saw them on the Wishon site I thought they were chicks irons.

Look at the Maltby stuff, pete. They are almost all 0.370. They all list the amount of offset on them as well. I think the MTF and MCC are the least offset of the cavity backs.

I think that some better quality component heads would fit the bill being .370. ie. KZG or Nakashima.

Precepts 31D, can't go wrong.

I have done it but I have special jig and drill press to do it. You have to use a reamer not a drill as drills are oval shaped will make the shaft site off centre. Hope that help.

Tis a crap job - buy some Wishons.

Very cheap and very good.

I have looked at those too. The 705 are cast, low offset and .370. Not sure whether they would need weights added to swingweight correctly with the Dynalites.

Alpha heads are generally pretty cheap and pretty good:
http://www.alphagolfclubs.com/products/Irons

Or else you could just ream out a set of .355 heads to .370 or just do what Callaway used to do and put .370 into .355 heads by slitting the end of the shaft and shoving them in.

KZG seems to make pretty good looking irons.

KZG seems to make pretty good looking irons.

They have models that have the low offset blade style "player" head you are after.

3oneday
5th November 2009, 10:39 AM
Most of them seem to have over 4mm of offset though, which is more than the Wishon.

Unless you go for the ZO's. Not the easiest to hit though. I've got a set with old school project X satin 5.5. Not the most forgving set up but sweet all the same.

Yep, all great looking sticks but I'm past wanking myself about blades. I think the wishon 705 tick all the boxes (except the fabulous resale box).

Oldplayer
5th November 2009, 10:50 AM
Yes I agree, look at my sig. I just am a sucker for traditional type blades, they are not my gamers. The Z101's are the softest sticks I have ever hit with a sole profile and a topline the purists would kill for. One of the best ever in recent years IMO.

All component heads fall into this catagory.

I know, I looked at the ZO years and years ago, probably playable but why make it harder I guess. Anyway, I found someone in the USA who will sell me 4 to W in the Wishon for $95USD + ship. I'll wait for Ludwig at clubmate to see what he can do and do my usual.... buy and regret it later

Life too short not to enjoy it. I have fully indulged my love for beautiful, classic blades and players cavities. And don't regret it. I have a reasonable collection.

I have it down to three choices....

A set of Precept Tour Premiums with Dynamic Gold R300
A set of Hogan FTX with Dynalite R300
The Wishon 705 heads

None of which have particularly great (zero) resale, Wishon has the lowest offset but are the ugliest. Precepts are pure irons but have the wrong shafts (and wrong tip sizes) and the Hogans are an as obscure selection as the Wishons are.

I have had and got rid of some tour premiums. I was very dissapointed in them. They felt too light and were harsh and crappy to hit. go with the Wishons.

Tomson

I might have a set of 5-pw of 705 at home if you are interested. I will have to check with the old man if he still has them.

The FTXs are sexy. The 705 wishons sound like the obvious choice, however they are not the best looking - the scalloped cavity is a little weird. I personally prefer the 555 series for looks.

It seems the main drawcard for the 705s is the ability to add tungsten weights in the toe for MOI matching etc, which is neat if you're into that sort of witchcraft.

The last time I tried image shack I could only get a link up and not the actual photo. when I did get an image it was way too big and I couldn't reduce it. I know I'm doing something wrong, I'll try to attach a jpeg. That's a start, it's a pic i already had on file. what would you like to see? Some titleist tours? wilson fg59's, cleveland 588t, powerbilt century baldes, Macgregor Muirfield 20th?
