OK, following on from the Music thread, lets get this happening again.

This time, no cwazy canadian delays. For those unfamiliar with round 1, thread found here. (http://www.ozgolf.net/forums/showthread.php?t=10935&highlight=music+swapping)

From what I can see, those already keen:

1. Adlo
2. Yossarian
3. Johnny Canuck
4. AlexMc
5. Courty
6. AndyP
7. LarryLong

Any more takers?

Edit: Are those on the list happy to be there?

OK, I have had a quick look at my music ho collection. It is the musical equivalent of Perci's house of Golf.

Unfortunately for Courty and AndyP, the bulk of my favourite music this year has been folk/singer-songwriter stuff. So if an effort to avoid boring them to tears, as I know they like the upbeat pop tunes, I am going to make 2 CD's.

One for upbeat.
One for mellow tunes.

There is no obligation for anyone to follow suit.

Scottt, I am still happy to send you a package of CDs if you want.

This is from last October/November's music swap, or this new one? Keen and appreciative either way, but don't go to too much trouble.

All of the above.

OK, boredom, too much coffee and some sleeplessness has resulted in 2 playlists already

I think they sound OK, I will have a listen to them over the coming days. Just hoping to avoid too many song double-ups amongst Ozgolfers.

The "normal" disc:

The "mellow" disc:

Count me in, now that I know Adlo isn't sending a disc of Radiohead songs. :)

Aldo - Goodnight Rose. Great opener. No room for In My Time Of Need? - that is the epitome of mellow and moving, IMO.

 Cool, OP edited.

Trying to keep Ryan Adams at a minimum, but find it hard not to include a track. Have been loving the albums with the Cardinals of late, the harmonies and melodies are sublime.

I just received a spam PM about this.

I'm interested, but I'm not sure what I can bring to the table. Half of the music I've listened to in the last year is because of recommendations from this joint. I'll see what I can rustle up though.

adlo
4th November 2009, 04:58 PM
Cheeky, cheeky AP.

See how you go.

There were quite a few songs I did not add into the playlist because I know most on here have listened to it (Temper Trap being a good example).

Yossarian
4th November 2009, 05:02 PM
I should have plenty up my sleeve.

Yossarian
4th November 2009, 11:28 PM
Actually this is going to take some thought.

adlo
5th November 2009, 12:31 AM
You will get back out of it as much as you put in. Do the hard yards.

Hey, everybody listed, you happy to be in this thing?

Johnny Canuck
5th November 2009, 12:52 AM
yes boss

Yossarian
5th November 2009, 12:53 AM
I am in to boss, don't hit me with the whip again.

You know it!!

adlo

Listening through, very happy with my "mellow" disc. The "normal" mix needs a few tweaks.

AlexMc
5th November 2009, 07:50 AM
I'm in.

Courty
5th November 2009, 05:11 PM
Definitely in, but it'll be harder work than the previous one. Like AndyP said, a lot of my more recent listenings come from recommendations from here.

adlo
5th November 2009, 10:03 PM
Cool, 7 parties keen.

I am setting my discs in concrete now, just made a few amendments to the "normal" disc, I think I am happy with it.

Yossarian
5th November 2009, 10:10 PM
**** i just realised that when we changed over to windows seven i didn't back up all my music.

Ah well, more fun going through all my cds.

adlo
5th November 2009, 10:11 PM
Should have bought a Mac. Trust me.

LarryLong
6th November 2009, 07:55 AM
Should have bought a $100 removable USB drive.

Much cheaper than a Mac.

So how much time do we have here? I am in danger of being the Johnny Canuck to this year's thread if I revert to my natural state of procrastination.

I think I'll spend my work day listening to music today. :)

adlo
6th November 2009, 03:02 PM
Within a few weeks would be ideal LL.

Otherwise I will be forced to make changes to my lists or make a third disc.

Jarro
6th November 2009, 03:07 PM
I'm not going to commit 100% to this, but IF i get the inclination, i'll do up a disc of some of my tunes for you to be amazed by

How are we going?

AndyP
12th November 2009, 04:42 PM
I was never any chance of getting it ready before the Champs. It won't be too much different to the CD I did up for my mate and I've already swapped a few tracks in and out for the OZgolf crowd.

adlo
12th November 2009, 04:49 PM
That's cool AP, just hoping for a December swap at this stage.

AndyP
12th November 2009, 04:53 PM
That gives me a chance to find more new music then.

Courty
12th November 2009, 09:17 PM
My list is 90% complete. I have to narrow down half a dozen tracks to 2 from 2 different artists, then put them in an order that flows.

Jarro
12th November 2009, 09:22 PM
Let me look back through last years thread to see if you said exactly the same thing.

Yeah i probably did.

But i'm not really keen to waste my time putting together a killer list that'll fly right over your head.

adlo
13th November 2009, 12:35 AM
It is not that it flies over ones head.

The problem is, after 2 songs the listener is deaf. Can't hear the rest of the CD.

How is this going gents?

Xmas time is looming. Lets try and get this done before that if possible.

Updates?

Courty
4th December 2009, 11:18 PM
Got my songlist done, but I think I need to tweak the order a little.

AndyP
5th December 2009, 10:48 AM
Mostly done, I guess. I'll try to work on it while away from home next week. I might need to double up on artists, particularly Empire Of The Sun.

adlo
9th December 2009, 02:35 PM
Courty and AndyP, the consummate professionals as always.

PM sent to the rebels. Chasing some updates.

Oh, and I finished a 3rd disc. Please put a stop to my madness.

LarryLong
9th December 2009, 09:36 PM
Picked some, frantically listening to more in my car on the way to work. About three quarters of the way there

Coming to the realisation that my music collection isn't as cool as I thought it was. Will get something done in the next two weeks.

AlexMc
9th December 2009, 10:26 PM
I am in guys...I'm having all sorts of trouble getting my list right though...it's bloody hard!

I'll have my shit together by the weekend...

Thanks gents, I will continue to bug you all.

Johnny Canuck

Cwazy Canadian, what the hell are you talking aboot? Lists disappearing? Don't you just make them on the computer?

I am in guys...I'm having all sorts of trouble getting my list right though...it's bloody hard!

I'll have my shit together by the weekend...
I think I find it easier to make multiple playlists. Its too hard to condense a years music into one CD for me.

Picked some, frantically listening to more in my car on the way to work. About three quarters of the way there

Coming to the realisation that my music collection isn't as cool as I thought it was. Will get something done in the next two weeks.
Don't stress LL. Cool or uncool. If everyone can find a new artist or two that they like, it is a success.

Did you see the CD I did last time? Not cool at all.
Your reputation as "OzGolf's coolest dude" was forever ruined!!

Johnny Canuck
20th December 2009, 04:52 PM

My disc(s) are complete and I don't want to change them anymore. Please hurry up everybody.

Cheers.

AndyP
23rd December 2009, 06:38 AM
I still think you should only do one CD. The whole point of doing a physical CD instead of MP3s was to limit the music.

adlo
23rd December 2009, 01:13 PM
It is my gift to you AP for being such an awesome mod.

AndyP
30th December 2009, 08:15 PM
Done, done and done.

My disc(s) are complete and I don't want to change them anymore. Please hurry up everybody.

Cheers.
My disc is done and the writeup is done too.

I need everyone else to get their shit in order quickly before I change my approach to the CD, rejig the songs or assess the punctuation of my writeup.

Courty
30th December 2009, 08:42 PM
OK. I'll get mine finalised in the next day or two.

AndyP
7th January 2010, 12:47 PM
Adlo, do you want to do some gathering of postal addresses? Is it safe to assume that we can send the CDs for the WA boys in one batch?

adlo
7th January 2010, 01:46 PM
Yes, no problems. You can send all WA CDs to yours truly.

I will do a PM frenzy this afternoon/evening to sort it out.

Yossarian
7th January 2010, 01:48 PM
Ah shit I forgot aboot this.

adlo
7th January 2010, 01:50 PM
Well, you are home sick. Sort it oot.

7th January 2010, 01:53 PM
Can I just burn my mums copy of ABBA's greatest hits?

adlo
7th January 2010, 01:55 PM
It depends, are you trying to confirm or deny your "gheyest WA OzGolfer" tag?

Yossarian
7th January 2010, 01:57 PM
Both, I like to provide a little mystery.

AndyP
7th January 2010, 02:01 PM
Can I just burn my mums copy of ABBA's greatest hits?I've already got it, plus the Singstar game. Can you send me something else?

Yossarian
7th January 2010, 02:02 PM
John Denver?

AndyP
7th January 2010, 02:09 PM
Send 3 John Denver CDs to match adlo's CD count.

Yossarian
7th January 2010, 02:27 PM
I think it is a dual cd. How about 2 John Denver and some Paul Simon?

adlo
8th January 2010, 05:15 AM
OK, before my promised PM frenzy, lets at least work out how many delivery points are required.

WA- 1 for Adlo, Yoss and Jc
QLD- Do AP and Courty require separate postage or is there some event coming up that will unite you both?

Vic- Larry Long
NSW- AlexMc

Have I missed anyone?

So 4 or 5 postal addresses required, if one of the Qld boys can let me know the go.

AndyP
8th January 2010, 10:07 AM

Yossarian
8th January 2010, 02:26 PM

Are you gonna post these adlo? I am making some tweaks to mine now. I feel I should sort of apologise because alot of my newer stuff is missing but it is still ok.

I should have them done by sunday to give to you?

adlo
12th January 2010, 05:25 PM
I hope JC can "borrow" some satchels from work to make up for his tardiness, yet again. But yes, pass the CDs to me on the weekend.

JC, less stalky-stalky, more mixy-mixy.

Johnny Canuck
12th January 2010, 05:39 PM
i'll have them this weekend.

no stalky stalky.

AndyP
12th January 2010, 08:08 PM

Courty

My track-listing is complete, but I haven't been able to burn the CDs yet (recovering from a hard drive failure).

Yossarian
16th January 2010, 11:37 PM
Adro, I just realised that I don't have any cases for these cds... Problem?

adlo
16th January 2010, 11:38 PM
Should be OK, I am using a simple DVD sleeve that could accommodate an additional disc.

Yossarian
16th January 2010, 11:39 PM
Sweet. Cheers mate, didn't even think just went and bought a 50 pack of CD's.

adlo
18th January 2010, 11:03 PM
OK, I will compose an address PM and send it out shortly.

I am yet to know if Courty was able to burn CDs. Also didn't receive CDs from Yoss on the weekend. JC still needs to confirm he has been able to print out whatever he needs to (tracklist I presume).

I have rejigged my playlists. I am not as happy with the CDs, but I actually had 3 CDs done. 1 was very mellow. I decided to scrap that disc as it seems I am the only one who listens to a lot of singer-songwriter mellow tunes.

So, I have thrown a few slow songs on the first 2 CDs. I don't think they flow quite as well, but they are a good overview of my music for 2009.

AndyP
18th January 2010, 11:16 PM
Two CDs is better than three IMO, Ads. Courty assures me that he will be sending all of the CDs to me this week, and I'll then get the missus to post them out next week.

adlo
18th January 2010, 11:18 PM
I know AP, I took what you said earlier seriously.

I'll try and get all the WA CDs together this week.

Johnny Canuck
18th January 2010, 11:24 PM

Johnny Canuck
18th January 2010, 11:31 PM

adlo
18th January 2010, 11:53 PM

Johnny Canuck
18th January 2010, 11:56 PM
I'm including one track. I have the two songs selected that it will precede.

adlo
19th January 2010, 12:05 AM

LarryLong
22nd January 2010, 03:22 PM
Song writeups? Was going to ask about that. What's the required level of documentation? Award-winning musical journo standard (i.e use lots of adjectives, none of which could actually be applied to music, to describe the music) or just dribble a bit about each track?

Do we send the write-ups with the discs, or just post 'em up here?

I'm assuming AndyP's disc is going to come with a bound 50-page booklet? :)

adlo
22nd January 2010, 03:28 PM
Whatever you please.

Last year most people wrote a sentence or two for each track.

Some printed in and posted with the CD. Some posted here. Whatever you prefer.

1. Lift flap at back.
2. Remove CD.
3. Give yourself an uppercut if you couldn't work it out. ;)

No comment on the CD before the others get the chance to listen. I could send an abusive PM though?

Sure, why not?

Ok Adlo has my CD's and has requested a write up so he knows what he is listening to.

1. Gomez: Get Miles.
From their debut album Bring it On this was the opening track. I remember buying this album on a whim and being hooked. The vocals, the fuzzed out guitar. Great opening track IMO.

2. The Bravery: A Honest Mistake.

I can't remember why I bought this album, this is the opening track though and it is pretty good. The rest of the album was a bit so so.

3. Franz Ferdipants: Evil and A Heathen

Love the guitar work on this one, Ferdipants have a way of playing the guitars off against each other or something that really does it for me. Love the lyrics as well.

4: Bloc Party: Ares

This was the opener off their last album, which was also their weakest album IMO. This song live was awesome though. Love this band.

5. LCD Soundsystem: North American Scum

Love these guys, bit different to the sort of stuff I normally listen to. Not sure how to describe it. Great track off a great album though.

6. Kings of Leon: The Bucket

Back when KoL where still cool.;) Off Aha Shake Heartbreak, which IMO is one of the best albums of the last decade. Cool guitar, cool lyrics. The feelgood hit of the summer.

7. The Mars Volta: Roulette Dares (The Haunt Of)

Not sure how this one will go down with you lot. I love these guys, Omar gets a lot of Zappa comparisons. I think he is one of the best going around. In hindsight I could have chosen a more user friendly song...

8. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club: Complicated Situation

Of the album Howl, which was a really bluesy folksy acoustic album. Also an awesome awesome alubm. Was hard to chose a song off it. I just like the feel of this song, something a bit different from the previous songs.

9. The Pogues: A Pair Of Brown Eyes

Again not sure how this song will go with you guys. But I love it. The Pogues are great, and this song just speaks to me.

10. Llyod Cole and the Commotions: Rattlesnakes

One of the few good things to come out of the 80's ;) Love Cole, he uses words so well, the way they fall across the music is really nice. Great album as well.

11. Neil Young: Revolution Blues

Ahh Neil Young. I still remember when I put decade on for the first time. I love Neil Young. So hard to chose just one song, I easily have about ten favourites on level pegging but I went with this one. Love the gee-tar, the lyrics, his voice.

12. Matisyahu: A King Without a Crown

Bit different. Heard this on the JJJ and really liked it.

13. Smashing Pumpkins: The Everlasting Gaze

Ahh billy corgan. You are a crazy man, but a genius as well. Again a lot of Pumpkins songs I could have chosen, I like the anger, bitterness in this one.

14. Wolf and Cub: This Mess

Tripped out acid rock. Great stuff IMO. Not everyones cup of tea.

15. The Music: Take The Long Road and Walk It

Really like these guys, really good live when the lead singer is not on the gear. Their first album is pretty solid IMO good party music.

16: The Strokes: 12:51

Just a really nice little song, love the lyrics, the poppiness of it. The Strokes are cool if you ask me.

17. A Perfect Circle: Weak and Powerless

Really like the way this song builds, no maynard scream in this one though which is said.

18. The Drones: Shark Fin Blues

Great song, hits a nerve with me everytime for some reason. Really like it as an opener, really like it as a closer. The angst and pain in the voice is amazing IMO. Great riff too.

4 trial runs yesterday. A few will be eliminated and subbed. With only a few more write ups to create and to cut and paste the others, I should be good to go on Friday. Thursday will be finalised demo day.

Tom Jones might not make the cut.

Have listened to APs, Yoss' and Courty's CD already. All very different. Hurry up JC, lets spread the wealth.

OZgolf CD Swap 2010

01: Duffy - Stepping Stone (Rockferry) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFjF64Mcaao) Something about this track (and album) sounds very old-fashioned, but it's very refreshing at the same time. Even though the instrumental side is minimalist, there is a real depth to the sound. It was difficult to decide which track from the album to include.

02: Paul Simon - Spirit Voices (The Rhythm Of The Saints) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlIs97t-HVE) Some old-skool stuff here. This one is my favourite track from the lesser-known follow up to Graceland. Like the former album, this one is full of gems but this time based on the sounds of South America.

03: The Ting Tings - We Walk (We Started Nothing) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4BA9Q-ufKc) The only serious track from what is a good fun pop-rock album. As a side note, I have no idea what this song is about… I just like it.

04: Phoenix - Love Like A Sunset (Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPT1pEvF4XY) Probably not the best track from the album, but I just lurve the epic instrumental intro.

05: Vampire Weekend - Horchata (Contra) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkUQ-OBazbc) I found these guys from the 2009 CD Swap (thanks adlo). I believe this cool track is the first single from their newly released album 'Contra'. It was a tough call between this one and 'White Sky'.

06: Paolo Nutini - Pencil Full Of Lead (Sunny Side Up) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-xd3NuWQI0) Simply a good fun upbeat tune.

07: Mystery Jets ft. Laura Marling - Young Love (Twenty One) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xi7ZAAWWl1c) Apparently this pommy trio have been around for at least 3 albums and a huge following in the small venues around the UK. I discovered them on rage one night.

08: Eric Hutchinson - Outside Villanova (Sounds Like This) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGdnL3vPyf4) It was so hard to pick a favourite track from 'Sounds Like This'. As far as whole albums go, this one was my best of the year.

09: Mika - Blue Eyes (The Boy Who Knew Too Much) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8I9UJ_eayiY) Love him or hate him, this was the only track I really enjoyed from his 2nd album.

10: Phoenix - Holdin' On Together (Alphabetical) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcAsLjjBATc) One of my favourite Phoenix tracks… ever. Just a cool, funky tune.

11: Bluejuice - Head Of The Hawk (Head Of The Hawk) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzAFjoa59eA) An aussie group recently popularised by their upbeat release of 'Broken Leg'. You can't help but tap your feet along to this one.

12: Ladyhawke - Another Runaway (Ladyhawke) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaj0fzuRpaA) Ladyhawke has put together a very mature & polished album for a first attempt. This one is my favourite after the first single 'My Delerium' which gained heaps of airplay a little while back.

13: White Stripes vs. Eric B & Rakim - Paid For My Doorbell (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOdnq8PdbAs) Another mashup from my archives which blends two distinct genres very successfully.

14: Mystery Jets - Two Doors Down (Twenty One) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2Dl3VQ2K2U) Another quirky but catchy track from the Mystery Jets. The first time you see the film clip, you would think it was recorded in 1984, but who doesn't secretly love 80's music. ;-)

15: Bloc Party - One More Chance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOm5z2KIDJg) I'm a sucker for an upbeat piano melody and a good beat, and this track has them both.

16: Owl City - Tip Of The Iceberg (Ocean Eyes) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJePPXLVFlU) I quickly tired of 'Fireflies' getting flogged on the radio, but this track stands out to me as something a little different from the rest if their music.

17: Pnau - Embrace (Pnau) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Et18cBBX5Sg) Pnau are veterans of the Australian electronica scene (for better or for worse). Wild Strawberries was utter garbage, but this track showed the maturity and poise that the industry lacks in this country. If I'm not mistaken, the vocals belong to Ladyhawke.

18: Discovery - So Insane (LP) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8HQPIgFtB4) I enjoyed this de-constructed electronica offering. I find the change of tempo's strangely appealing. I have recently discovered (pun intended) that Discovery is a side-project of the keyboardist from Vampire Weekend.

I won't get into links like Courty has done, but mine is a CD as described of guitar driven songs. Here it is:

That Was Just Your Life - Metallica

My favourite band. James Hetfield is the premier frontman in rock (right beside Lemmy who still knocks back a bottle of Jack each day at 63) IMO. The best voice and awesome guitar player. Death Magnetic will rate as one of their best albums.

All My Life - Foo Fighters

Still yet to see them live, but Dave Grohl oozes talent. Shed the Nirvana drummer image some time ago to be a standout frontman who produces some great rock riffs as in this song.

Paradise City - Guns N' Roses

An oldie but a goodie from the 80's. Everyones introduction to Slash.

Do The Evolution - Pearl Jam

A change to alternative. It sounds out of tune at times but Eddie Vedder is one of very few singers I've seen live who sounds exactly like he does on tape (without lip syncing).

Moth - Audioslave

A combination of Rage Against The Machine and Soundgarden can only be good things. Chris Cornell has an amazing voice and is backed well. I've seen RATM live and they are just as good as what you hear recorded.

Brown Sugar - The Rolling Stones

The Stones, what more needs to be said. My wife and I still talk about their concert in Brisbane at Boondal in 2004. Still ranks as the best live show we have ever seen.

Red House - Jimi Hendrix

There are alot of versions of Red House (and many other Hendrix tunes) produced over the years. However this is my favourite from his Blues album. Simply sounds like Jimi and the boys tooling around on acid all day (by his 'yeahhhh' after every lick) and doesn't disappoint.

I Could Have Lied - Red Hot Chili Peppers

A great song highlighting the talent of John Frusciante. Very soulful guitar solo which makes one of their unknown songs a standout.

Darker Side - Jonny Lang

He was a kid at 15 when this album was made. Lang is one of the few blues players whose guitar is an extension of their arms. You think it's all over with a minute to go until he opens up again.

Here Is No Why - Smashing Pumpkins

As Yoss mentioned earlier, Billy Corgan is a gifted individual. Plenty of distortion and another incredible guitar solo.

Jizz Da Pit - Slash's Snakepit

Slash at his best here. The second half is a bit dull, but the first minute is kick ass in this instrumental. Many of Slash's solo's are off the cuff.

Slither - Velvet Revolver

One of the few VR songs I like. Seems to have missed their mark with Scott Whalen on vocals. Will wait and see what Slash's solo album is like when released in the next month or so.

Walk - Pantera

I've been front row at a Pantera concert and Dimebag Darrell is one of the best on guitar. Jump onto YouTube to see some of his exploits. Widely respected within the metal community who would have been going strong still unless that nutbag shot him on stage.

Vicarious - Tool

10,000 Days is one of their best albums, period. Maynard goes off a bit, but again great saturated guitar.

Hotter And Hotter - Rollins Band

For those that don't know, Henry Rollins is one of the most definative figures in punk rock with his fronting of Black Flag. His solo work of late has also been of note. I love this tune from 'Get Some Go Again' as it simply raw rock at its best. I dragged my wife along to one his spoken word nights in Brisbane one night which she loved. If you get the chance to see him, music or spoken, do it.

Ride On - AC/DC

As engraved on his grave. Bon at his best.

Here's my playlist for those that haven't taken part, but still want to have a listen. You can play the whole thing in youtube (heading link) in one go (minus the Prince song) or click on them individually.

----------------------

1.21 GIGAWATTS (AndyP Mixed Tape II) (http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=5CDDFBC20EAA3420)

Last year I did up a CD that was from some of my favourite artists, but very little new music. This CD is more about what I’ve been listening to over the last 12 months, and the majority of it is less than two years old. So much music around now seems to be heavily influenced by music of the past, particularly the 80s, and I’m not complaining. I’ve been delving into a decent amount of electronic/dance music lately, so this disc reflects that.

1. Rest In Peace (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-HQisG2Lv8) – Extreme
You may remember Extreme from More Than Words & Hole Hearted, but that’s not their normal music. This is early 90s glam rock and it’s a lot of fun. Get out your air guitar for their tracks!

2. Sweet Disposition (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m3b9E1p9uOA) – The Temper Trap
I know they weren’t meant to be on the CD, but they have been a great find this year, and I had to include one song.

3. Heavy Cross (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uorKDGU7O1w) – The Gossip
Beth Ditto is the official fat lesbian chick of OZgolf. Good voice too.

4. Bulletproof (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9cXLFk65y4) – La Roux
This is probably my favourite track from their album. I find the lead chick’s voice to be rather strange, and sometimes bordering on annoying, but I get over it as it’s great music.

5. Dusk to Dawn (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUyuEyVb6KU) – Ladyhawke
Not the first or last of a few Big Day Out acts I’ve got on here. Her voice isn’t great, but I like the album. I’m not sure how she will hold up live though.

6. Evacuate the Dancefloor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-uDixD4tXXU) – Cascada
Pure doof doof, Eurodance music. It can get a bit monotonous if you listen to a whole album, but it goes down well if you are in the mood for it.

7. Stars Come Out (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P21ynJZhQBY) – Calvin Harris
I love his latest album (Ready for the Weekend) and haven’t got sick of it yet, after many plays. He is one of the main reasons that I am going to BDO, although his live act may not be that good. He admits he uses autotuning software for his voice, but I’m hoping the music and energy of the performance make it great. This is one of his unreleased tracks.

8. When Love Takes Over (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zudbz4hOcbc) – David Guetta
He seems to be the DJ of the moment, and his old stuff seems okay from what I have heard. When Love Takes Over is one of my fave tracks of the year (could be an exaggeration, but it is good).

9. This Boy’s in Love (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WO45oUdRqTs) – The Presets
You have probably heard of these guys, and it’s yet another electronic Aussie act. I first really took notice of them when they had several songs right at the top of last years JJJ Hottest 100.

10. Ready For The Weekend (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V3VPmU482Hs) – Calvin Harris
Best played on Friday afternoons…..loud.

11. Sometimes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9q-jKsf_p9A) – Miami Horror
Miami Horror is my artist of the moment. I liked his stuff as soon as I heard it. This is his debut single from an upcoming album.

12. Little Secrets (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8IUbxsG1-fc) – Passion Pit
This is another late entry to the CD. Getting past the vocals may be a challenge for some to like this band’s music, but the whole album has really grown on me.

13. 4Ever– Prince
There was no chance of an album without Prince. This is from his multiple CD release early in 09.

14. Undisclosed Desires (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8OOWcsFj0U)– Muse
I know some of you don’t like the big songs of Muse, so maybe this more sedate song will suit your tastes. Then again, maybe it won’t.

15. All The Right Moves (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrOeGCJdZe4) – One Republic
I can’t put my finger on what it is about their music that makes me enjoy their CDs so much. It seems very busy in terms of instruments used, and it doesn’t work live, however the studio sound is the goods for me. Their big hit to date is from Timbaland remixing Apologise. This is from their new album.

16. Get It (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwPqWvVr6MA) – Dukes Of Windsor
If my last CD wasn’t so retro, I would have found room for these guys. I’ve got to them this time around. I saw them as a support act for Sneaky Sound System, and immediately liked their energy and sound.

17. Summerfest ’86 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbGA_mEmUzw) – Miami Horror
This is probably a bit of filler on the CD. But I stopped myself from putting a second Prince song on, and Miami Horror is clearly influenced by Prince music, so this is a good compromise.

18. Resistance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtsqT3nOVno) – Muse
They are the main reason I am going to BDO, and would have to be my favourite band now. Thanks for the introduction Bruce and Courty.

19. Bohemian Rhapsody (Live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZRLwsr_j2S4) – Pink
Well, I did go to her concert this year, so it seems only fair that I put a song in. I’m not a big listener of her music, but she certainly does put on a good show.

OK, here's my effort - Music for men who use iron covers. I ended up making a couple of last minute changes when I found out that The Cave by Mumford and Sons made the hottest 100. That's way too cool for me. Upon reflection I only put it in there to fit in with the OzGolf in-crowd and as an excuse to have a dig at AndyP in the songlist, so it had to go.

I tried to mostly pick stuff that wouldn't be too well known, and to limit myself to the last five years or so after I realised that I actually have very little stuff from 2009 in my collection and couldn't do a 'new stuff' CD.

Couldn't do YouTube links as most of the stuff on this CD is too crap to be up on YouTube (and I'm too lazy).

Enjoy!

1. Ben Kweller – I need you back (On my way) – Best opening track I could find in my collection of recent-ish albums. Almost too old to include, but I love the opening riff. My baby girl loves this song.

2. The Bluetones – Big Problem (Luxembourg) – I love a bit of energetic power pop. Most of their stuff is more laid-back and jangly, but this album had a more guitar-driven sound.

3. The New Pornographers – All of the things that go to make heaven and earth (Challengers) – Possibly my favourite band. Carl Newman can take a good, catchy song, and just keep tweaking it until it's so catchy it's almost silly. More hooks than a golf course full of sucked-in club hos wielding over-priced Taylormade draw clubs. Success! Hoorah!

4. Pernice Brothers – The weakest shade of blue (Yours, mine and ours) – I'm a sucker for anything with well-placed oohs and ahs in the chorus. Most of their stuff is reflective, and Joe Pernice has a voice to match.

5. Icecream Hands – Weak at the knees (The good china) – Hugely underrated Aussie band. Charles Jenkins seemed a nice bloke when I met him at a Melbourne record store a few years ago.

6. Ted Leo and the Pharmacists – Me and Mia (Shake the sheets) – Indie rock? Punk? Not sure, but Ted Leo is cool. Writes angry protests songs and sticks it to the man. What a guy.

7. Jon Brion – Ruin my day (Meaningless) – Jon Brion is some kind of musical savant record producer who released a solo album once upon a time. Here's a nice slow one.

8. Epicure – One last chance to reach you (Postcards from a ghost) – Epicure are from my original home town, but I never saw them live. A shame, because I reckon Juan Alban has one of the best voices going around and they have a unique sound.

9. Deathray – 10:15 (Deathray) – Quirky band featuring an ex-member of Cake. Don't know much about them other than that.

10. Michael Penn – On Automatic (Mr. Hollywood Jnr, 1947) – I've always quite liked Michael Penn. I think that makes me uncool, but hey, he's banging Aimee Mann, so he must have something going for him, right?

11. Fastball – Perfect world (Keep your wig on) – Very consistent trio whose music covers indie-rock, power pop and almost country. Most people have heard their indie hit “The way” but wouldn't know anything else about them.

12. The Twilight Hours – Queen of tomorrow (Stereo Night) – Matt Wilson, former frontman of the incredible Trip Shakespeare resurfaces occasionally with his old bass player, John Munson from Semisonic. Most of Stereo Night is serious, but this is just a fun little song about a love that couldn't survive the temptation of a cool stereo. Catchy.

13. Gus and Frank – Chocolate (Confessions of a rooftop killer) – Gus and Frank is the band I wish they had playing at the pubs when I was at uni. Fun little song from an album full of fun little songs.

14. Ben Folds - Brainwascht (Way to normal) - One of Ben's friends had a dig at him in a song after he broke up with his wife. This is his response. Acidic, bitchy, and a fantastic pop song to make it funny. Awesome comeback.

15. Liam Finn - Better to be (I'll be lightning) - I have no idea who Liam Finn grew up listening to as a kid. None whatsoever.

16. The Apples in Stereo - Same old drag (New magnetic wonder) - This album got stuck on my car stereo for a couple of weeks. Then I started playing it every night while I bathed the baby. My wife had to step in eventually.

17. Josh Joplin Group - Siddharthas of suburbia (The future that was) - The future is a stereo that eats your favourite tapes. The rest of the song could be crap and I'd still love it.

18. A.C. Newman - The town halo (The slow wonder) - It's not often you hear the words 'driving cello riff' being used when describing a song. Those cwazy Canadians, eh?

19. Dan Wilson - Breathless (Free life) - Matt Wilson's brother and ex-member of Trip Shakespeare, most people will recognise Dan as the lead singer of Semisonic. Free Life is a wonderful mid-tempo album that wanker music journos would call 'Well crafted'.

20. Andy Stochansky - Everest (Five star motel) - Andy Stochansky is another cwazy Canuck who is now busy wasting his life writing singles for Shannon Noll and Damien Leith. Such a shame. Five Star Motel is really worth a listen.

21. The Woggles - I gotta go now (Rock and roll backlash) - Retro garage rock heroes. The Woggles are, unfortunately, too cool for this world.

22. Cato Salsa Experience - Move on (A good tip for a good time) - Kooky Norwegian retro rockers. Groovy, ja?

23. Fountains of Wayne - The girl I can't forget (Out of state plates) - B-side from the band that writes the best pop songs since the Beach Boys. I don't think I've ever heard a bad track by them. They even do a pretty good cover of Britney Spears' Baby one more time on this album, their B-sides compilation, which actually stands up pretty well.

24. The apples in stereo - Sun is out (New magnetic wonder) - Pointless, silly, nothing song, but every time I hear it it gets stuck in my head and I end up singing it for an hour or so.

Listened to Courty's CD in the car this morning and left it in my computer at work. Enjoying a few of the tracks, but I'll wait until I've had a better listen before commenting. Eric Hutchinson is the standout for me so far.

I didn't say that. I said I originally made 3 CDs. One was very mellow (basically singer/songwriter stuff and folky stuff). I scrapped that CD and added my preferred tunes from that CD into the other 2 CDs. That being said, there is no heavy music on my CDs. IMO you need to make the bulk of a mix heavy (like BrettMs disc will be) or it doesn't work too well.

I've only got AndyP's CD (1.21 Gigawatts) so far, so here's my review.
It's no secret that AndyP and I have similar tastes in some areas, and therefore comes as no surprise that I already have many of the tracks on his CD. I'll skip reviewing these tracks at least for now (2, 3, 4, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 17 & 18 ).

Extreme - Rest In Peace: I'm not sold on this one. I've listened to it a few times and it's just not grabbing me. Maybe it's just too old to be cool anymore. ;)

Ladyhawke - Dusk To Dawn: I do already have the Ladyhawke album, and even featured one of her tracks on my CD. However this one seems to have escaped my attention. I've now added it to regular rotation and will have another listen to the rest of her CD again.

Cascada - Evacuate The Dancefloor: cheesy Eurohouse at it's finest. The 90s were full of tracks like this, but then I liked the 90s. I'll own up to enjoying this one.

Calvin Harris - Stars Come Out: the review of this one is almost word for word the same as Ladyhawke. Ready For The Weekend is certainly more appealing than his earlier efforts.

Miami Horror - Sometimes: I hadn't heard this one before, although I do have their EP and really like it. It took a few listens to get into the groove and I do like it, but I don't think it's quite as good as 'Make You Mine' from their Bravado EP.

Prince - 4Ever: I've never been a fan of the short, purple-wearing artist formerly known as the artist formerly known as Prince. And I gotta say, this one hasn't changed my opinion.

One Republic - All The Right Moves: I had these guys pegged as a one-hit wonder after Apologise (ft. Timbaland). This track hasn't convinced me that they'll make any more waves. It's ok, but very forgettable, IMO.

Dukes Of Windsor - Get It: Once again I am familiar with the artist, but had not heard this specific track before. Played softly it's just ok, but I'll reserve further judgement until I've played this one where it's probably meant to be (loud on a big sound system).

Pink - Bohemian Rhapsody (Live): Love her or hate her, no one can deny she is a superpower in the music world. I do quite like some of her stuff, but some songs just grate on me. I think she's done a great job of this one, and I can imagine the crowd at the venue would have gone off their tits at the famous 4 minute mark. I do see it as a bit of an odd choice for a female singer, but she's got the balls to pull it off.

AndyP
13th February 2010, 06:35 PM
Thanks for the review, Courty. As I've told you before, I was disappointed that I couldn't introduce Miami Horror and Passion Pit to you when I had my CD done in December, before you listened to them yourself.

In regards to your review of Miami Horror and Ladyhawke, it sounds like you listen to too much music and don't have enough plays of each album. I prefer to focus on an album or two at a time and give them a good flogging.

I think Miami Horror's Make You Mine is better than Don't Be On With Her, which he released, as well.

adlo

Yossarian

I eagerly await your review aldo.

People say Neil Young is rubbish which is just silly. And that Pink gets more jizz on balls than srixon wedges.

But you know what I mean, as much as I like to put down my girlfriends "taste" in music she can always come back with the fact taste is subjective. It is the one argument I can't win.

Courty CD Review

The CD felt like two halves to me. Tracks 1-9 and 10-18. At first I couldn’t get into the first half, but it was better in a chill-out mood. Overall, the album flows well, but I skipped more songs than I thought I would on Courty’s CD. Still, there’s four or five artists/albums I will follow up on.

It was difficult to decide which track from the album to include.Like Amy Winehouse’s old-fashioned music style, I found this “refreshing” too.

It’s okay, but I’m not going to follow it up and get the album.

03: The Ting Tings - We Walk (We Started Nothing) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4BA9Q-ufKc) The only serious track from what is a good fun pop-rock album. As a side note, I have no idea what this song is about… I just like it. I’ve been considering getting a Ting Ting album as they seem to have a few good songs. This has convinced me that I should.

04: Phoenix - Love Like A Sunset (Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPT1pEvF4XY) Probably not the best track from the album, but I just lurve the epic instrumental intro. You could have fit two good songs on your CD in it’s place.

05: Vampire Weekend - Horchata (Contra) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkUQ-OBazbc) I found these guys from the 2009 CD Swap (thanks adlo). I believe this cool track is the first single from their newly released album 'Contra'. It was a tough call between this one and 'White Sky'.I don’t like that Cousins song either. I’m not sure what it is about it.

06: Paolo Nutini - Pencil Full Of Lead (Sunny Side Up) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-xd3NuWQI0) Simply a good fun upbeat tune. Conveniently, it’s the third song in a row where I reach for the next track button.

07: Mystery Jets ft. Laura Marling - Young Love (Twenty One) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xi7ZAAWWl1c) Apparently this pommy trio have been around for at least 3 albums and a huge following in the small venues around the UK. I discovered them on rage one night.I really like this one. Good find. There are four members in the band (as seen in the film clip), with a fifth only doing studio work.

This style of bouncy-oh-so-happy pop music just doesn’t agree with me. It reminds me of that shitty Jason Mraz song. That said, I don’t hate it, and respect the song topic.

09: Mika - Blue Eyes (The Boy Who Knew Too Much) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8I9UJ_eayiY) Love him or hate him, this was the only track I really enjoyed from his 2nd album. The first released track scared me off this album, so I’ll take your word on the rest being ordinary. It’s a nice song though.

10: Phoenix - Holdin' On Together (Alphabetical) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcAsLjjBATc) One of my favourite Phoenix tracks… ever. Just a cool, funky tune.”I like their old stuff better than their new stuff.” I can’t get myself to like WAP, but I enjoyed listening to the Alphabetical album. Run, Run, Run is a good track too.

11: Bluejuice - Head Of The Hawk (Head Of The Hawk) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzAFjoa59eA) An aussie group recently popularised by their upbeat release of 'Broken Leg'. You can't help but tap your feet along to this one.Another artist that I considered following up more, but when I did last year on Youtube, I could only find Broken Leg and songs that were more rap. Perhaps they were all from the first album. I heard them do their latest release, Ain’t Tellin’ The Truth, at BDO. I liked that one too, so I should grab the album.

Already had this one, as mentioned by Courty.

13: White Stripes vs. Eric B & Rakim - Paid For My Doorbell (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aOdnq8PdbAs) Another mashup from my archives which blends two distinct genres very successfully. I didn’t mind it on my run the other day, but that’s the only time it has appealed to me. Do you need to like the songs used to like a mashup?

14: Mystery Jets - Two Doors Down (Twenty One) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2Dl3VQ2K2U) Another quirky but catchy track from the Mystery Jets. The first time you see the film clip, you would think it was recorded in 1984, but who doesn't secretly love 80's music. :wink:Great one. I can’t get this song out of my head. I was trying to figure out if it was an 80s song too. I’ve listened to the album a couple of times on Youtube and will get it. What are their other albums like?

15: Bloc Party - One More Chance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FOm5z2KIDJg) I'm a sucker for an upbeat piano melody and a good beat, and this track has them both.Yeah-Nah-Maybe. I gave a Bloc Party album a chance last year and passed. This hasn’t convinced me to try again.

It doesn’t sound that different to me, but I haven’t heard Fireflies too often. I don’t mind it, but the lyrics annoy me. Not that lyrics always matter, but they seem to stand out here. Can you explain them to me? Overkill on metaphors?

17: Pnau - Embrace (Pnau) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Et18cBBX5Sg) Pnau are veterans of the Australian electronica scene (for better or for worse). Wild Strawberries was utter garbage, but this track showed the maturity and poise that the industry lacks in this country. If I'm not mistaken, the vocals belong to Ladyhawke. The vocals are Ladyhawke. “This song has an 8 inch ****.”

18: Discovery - So Insane (LP) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8HQPIgFtB4) I enjoyed this de-constructed electronica offering. I find the change of tempo's strangely appealing. I have recently discovered (pun intended) that Discovery is a side-project of the keyboardist from Vampire Weekend.Bizarre.

I don’t like that Cousins song either. I’m not sure what it is about it.

I agree. For me, it's how hyper aware they seem of their own cool. It annoys me. It annoyed me with N.E.R.D and MGMT as well.

Thanks AndyP, I thought you'd never get around to it. ;)What about my questions?

I've listened to Adlo's CD1 once as background noise. Second listen now louder.
Four word review: Needs some Ryan Adams.

Do you need to like the songs used to like a mashup?

I've found that you don't. It all depends on what elements of the original song has been mashed.

What are their other albums like?

There's a couple of other good songs ("Half In Love With Elizabeth" & "Veiled In Grey") but the rest seem like fillers.

Can you explain them to me?

"The Tip of the Iceberg is about how support from loved ones can be a strong thing." :-s

I don't care, I just like it.

No love from AlexMc here either.

Not to worry, I've still got two discs I haven't even started with yet.

All the other CDs have had 2-3 spins each.

Cheers for the update :D

CD received thanks, AlexMc. I had a quick look at the playlist before putting it in the OZgolf pile. The one thing that stood out was Sia, because I just had a youtube listening session of her clips last week. Great voice.

Adlo, I've listened to your first CD plenty of times now, and it still feels like I haven't listened to it enough to do a proper review. Maybe because it's all unfamiliar material, but it's been a couple of weeks of listening, so I'll make an attempt.

Overall, it's a CD that I haven't minded listening to at all. Sure, there are a few sections where I automatically skip, but on the whole, I've been pleasantly surprised. I can see myself adding most of this CD on to the playlist throughout the year to mix it up.

Songs I dislike: Tracks 2, 3, 6, 7, 18 through to 22 (this run of songs was too boring for my tastes). Initially I didn't mind the Manic Street Preachers song (Track 3), but I got sick of it.

Songs that I don't mind on the album, but probably won't follow up: Tracks 1, 5, 8, 9, 12, 13, 14, 15 & 17.
8. I've tried The XX, and I think they are a little slow for me, but they're not bad. I didn't skip when a song of theirs came on the radio yesterday.
9. I'm still confused over Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. Some songs have grown on me, but I just don't get why it's rated so highly. By the way, I'm disappointed that I got zero comment on my Phoenix comment in the music thread a little while ago.
13. The Ra Ra Riot is almost on the next list, but not quite. I'll give it some more play.

Now to the songs that had an impact on me:
4. Do you think the rest of the Barlight's album would appeal to me, adlo? You mentioned different music styles within the album. I enjoyed this track.
10. That Mew song is a goodun. It seems to be at the right pace for my liking.
11. I was just listening to a few tracks of Tegan & Sara's a few weeks ago when looking at the Groovin' the Moo line up. I rejected them, although I didn't think they were bad. Maybe I was a bit premature with that one, like I was with Midnight Juggernauts.
16. That DMB song rocks.

I think I'll have a crack at Lazza's CD next.

The original of that track is boring. The Fourtet remix makes it quite awesome.

Four Tet...... I just grabbed so of their stuff..... it's interesting....

AP. To answer your questions. Firstly, I think I missed your "Phoenix comment".

The Barlights. If you like the song, investigate further. They are quite good and I think you will like the album. It is not an album I enjoy ina single sitting, however, it has a lot of good songs.

The XX, perhaps download some remixes, or just turn up the volume. They are awesome.

Ra Ra Riot, I would beg anyone to persist, their album is seriously great. However, in your case, I know you like the more upbeat numbers, and that is what I put on my mix. Still, give them a shot. They took me a fair few listens until I was sold.

Mew, I think you will enjoy them if you like that track. Some of their stuff is averrage, but there is also plenty more along the lines of what you have heard.

I think you would like Tegan and Sara.

DMB, there is hope yet. Get their discography and pick and choose what you like. Their is some great rock in there. I would be happy to help (as I am sure Goughy would be).

AlexMc, CDs received today, cheers. Very interesting looking CD. I hope the newb's from this year stick with it for another year. It is quite interesting trying to come up with new CDs for a second year.

I think I would need to be pointed in the right direction at the very least.

I've given LL's playlist many listens now without a track listing, so now it's time to add those and think about doing a review. I've found it to be a CD that's easier to listen to if I do it over a few sessions.
