View Full Version : Good looking hybrids?

First off what is the difference between a hybrid and say 5,6,7 woods?

Are there any hybrids out there that look more like woods than irons with metal hanging off the back?

I'm thinking of starting to look at hybrids to see what all the fuss is about, i would still keep my 3 and 4 iron and drop back to 46 50 58

Would be looking for a hybrid to slot into between 15* 3wood and a 21* 3 iron, should i go 19* or 17*?

I would want to hit it high and to be able to easily hit it a bit more than my 3 iron, but be able to easily hit it as far as my 4 iron?

Is there such a beast out there for moi?

I used to hate hybrids with a passion but have come to get used to them now.. have a Ping 21 deg hybrid which is supposedly a 3 iron replacement but goes further than a traditional 3 iron. Stupid easy to hit. Don't think you will automatically need a 2 hybrid to fit between your 3 wood and 3 iron as as per above the 3 hybrids go longer typically than a 3 iron.

I've also got a Bridgestone J36 3 Hybrid, 22 deg (the loft fits better with my irons), looks more like a wood than the Ping, perhaps not as easy to hit.

The thing you will find with hybrids is that they are so versatile, hitting out of fairway bunkers etc a lot easier and more margin for error than a long iron

Zig do you use Reg shafts? If so this suggestion isn't for you cause they only make S and XS but the Cobra Baffler Pro looks like a small 5 wood, is easy to hit off crap lies, goes like scorched earth and you can get 16, 18, 20, 23* versions.
The 18* is probably the pick for what you want of between the 3 wood and the 3 iron.

They make the non pro versions with the option of regular shafts for us mere
mortals:mrgreen:. I have a DWS #3R with a stiffy (Aldida VS Proto HL) that goes alright, though I am carrying my 5 wood because I am hitting it very well and it suits my game better at present.

Look for something around 19-20 degrees zig. 17 degree will not fill the gap.

The 07 Burners, used by a few of us around OzGolf, look more like a shallow faced fairway wood.

many hybrids are offset, and also heel weighted, this makes them hook machines for some golfers

Wouldn't ne hard to put a new shaft in if it was worth it.

Have recently been hitting V-steel 4 wood and more recently tried out my brothers r7 TP 15* 3 wood and i like the size of the heads very much, could be an option, how much are they going for around the place?

Do you think they look like chippers Ned?

Maybe not a good thing? as i seem to have developed a bit of a hook, i've never ever been scared of the left side, but sometimes now i am

Take you hybrid hatred elsewhere sms.

Zig, the A7 might be better for you, a bit more of a neutral bias.

However, do not count out the 07 Burner. Still fetching a reasonable price as they are so damn good. TM tried to supercede it with the 08 Tour Burner rescue and no one jumped on board. They are now cheaper than the 07 model

Price? I grabbed one off here for about $110 and my second one from the bargain bin at a golf shop for $100.

Adlo's 07 burners are a really nice club. Nice and shallow. However the tour edge i picked up off TNO hits bombs. Great stick and not to bad to look at.

Adams idea pro - classic pear-ish design, and I love the fact that the paint doesn't extend right to the face of the club, unless your skying it out of the rough its nearly impossible to chip the paint near the face. Perfect when you consider how much crap you'll be hitting the hybrid out of.

Another pretty looking (and very underrated) hybrid is the Mizuno Clk Fli-Hi. Very solid feeling, minimal offset.

zigwah
31st October 2009, 10:48 PM
So love for the 07 burners, a few of the Adams and the Mizuno, is the mizuno the that looks like a driving iron?

adlo
31st October 2009, 11:05 PM
Don't get started on explaining Mizuno.

In a nut shell, they have a driving iron style (Fli-Hi) or a hybrid-wood style (CLK). DracZ was suggesting the latter.

zigwah
31st October 2009, 11:12 PM
I dont think i have seen the CLK, i'll google it

They look ok.

adlo
31st October 2009, 11:20 PM
CLK are decent, but IMO there is better. Adams hybrids for example.

Zig, the Adams A7:

The Idea Pro looks very similar.

The 07 Burner:

Check out the Ping G10, half way between the iron and wood style hybrids and easy to hit.

adlo
31st October 2009, 11:28 PM
Zig, they are different technology I think.

Plus, hybrid is steel faced, driver is Ti face/carbon crown, they are not going to feel related.

I owned the CLK. Believe me, you can do better. They are good, but not great.

Not quite sure what you mean by that zig (metal hanging off the back).

this is a better one of the Burner. As you can see, quite flat and long, like a FW wood.

I think I get ya.

The burners are fantastic clubs, but I found them MUCH better with a re-shaft.

adlo
31st October 2009, 11:46 PM
Slightly different COG, smaller head size, shallower face and better sole design. Shorter shaft too.

Looks like a FW with the versatility of a hybrid.

Zig, it is a magic wand in my hands. It is by far the easiest club in my bag to hit and to shape a shot. It has no offset and sits a little closed to my vision (but is actually very square) and looks to have more loft than its 21*. I use it in place of a 3-iron and 4-iron. It can be played like an iron but has the charactistics of a wood (the cenre of gravity is well behind the face, making it more forgiving).Miss the COG of a 3& 4-iron by a quarter of an inch towards the toe and you lose 15 metres and end up with a weak left to righty. The same contact with a hybrid will produce a right to left shape and a runner. The hybrid will minimize your mishits and will not get snagged in the rough because there is no hosel.

I got the one built yesterday that i got through your bulk order, its perfect. See no offset, and the price, $28 head, $7 for shaft, $4 for grip, and AU$20 for assembly, and about $15 shipping. (would have been half that if that clown fr0m WA didnt pull out of the champs!)

TheNuclearOne
9th November 2009, 02:58 PM
Tho not so much like a FW i would not swap my cup faced XCG 3 hybrid with stocko DVS 85s for anything. It doesn't hit as high or come in as soft as some but is absolutely perfect for what i seek. I play in windy conditions with tight fairways and it's been very handy off all sorts of lies for second shots on par 5's and cuts thru wind superbly.

It beat out Idea Pro's, Sonartec MD's, TP Rescues etc. Beat them out BADLY. It's closer to a 3 iron length than many but still goes long thanks to the Exotics cup face technology. A cracking hybrid.
